Hunter of the Evernight
Chapter 556: Coincidence

Chapter 556: Coincidence

The relatively peaceful atmosphere aboard Athenal was once again ruined as the noble passengers onboard went into an uproar after hearing what Vissarion had to say.

"What do you mean we have to take a detour?... Do you think we have the patience for that?"

"Exactly, we have already made plans and wish to stick to them. You cannot come out of the blue and say something like this."

Vissarion didn’t offer a response, instead waiting for the vast majority to vent their thoughts before he finally offered a response. "We received a telegram from a ship owned by the Enclave. It’s a cry for help."

"How does that concern us?... We are civilians, not the military. We aren’t even related to the Enclave, so why should we inconvenience ourselves for them?"

"You lot would not understand, but as a sailor I am well aware of what ignoring such a cry means. With everything I have on the line, I cannot in good faith ignore the cry for help." Vissarion remarked.

"Then go alone, after we have arrived at our destination."

"Enough!" Vissarion exclaimed, catching everyone off guard. "There could be innocents aboard that ship, people that require our help. I will not leave knowing that I could have saved them, so you can either stay put or you are more than welcome to leave. This is my ship and I have made the decision!"

With that said, Vissarion turned and left, leaving the nobles present to murmur amongst themselves.

Though unwilling, they couldn’t exactly go against Vissarion’s decision and so were forced to accept his choice.

Meanwhile, Alex and Ana exchanged looks for a moment before the former inquired. "Is this it?"

"I believe so." Ana replied. "The gears of fate have slowly begun to turn and it doesn’t seem like we’d be able to stop it."

"There has to be a reason, right?... This all feels a bit too coincidental."

Ana nodded. "I agree. But I can’t be sure, at least until I’ve figured out more details."

"In that case, let’s inform the dear captain about the current situation."

"Alright."

"Captain Vissarion." Alex called out as he rushed to catch up to the large tanned man on the ship’s deck.

Vissarion, accompanied by two crewmates, turned to face Alex, raising a brow as he intoned. "If you are here to make me change my mind about my decision, then you should stop wasting your time."

"Why though?... I am genuinely curious."

"Unless you are privy to certain esoteric matters, you would not understand."

"For the records, I am a Mystic." Alex calmly intoned, causing Vissarion to nod.

"Then it makes things easier to explain. The Enclave are representatives of the Goddess of the Sea. Which means disregarding them is the same as disregarding the Goddess of the Sea."

"If they are representatives, let them ask their Goddess for help. Why must a passenger ship be risked?" Ana calmly inquired from the side.

"The Goddess is a sacred existence that can only be called upon by those that have been chosen by her, not just some entity that any fool can summon. But the fact that the message was sent from a ship owned by the Enclave means that there are people aboard the ship and I plan to save them.

"This can be regarded as an act of service to the Enclave, an act that can help me advance up the Storm Wheel and would also further ingratiate me to the Enclave. There is a reason my ship has never been attacked despite being a regular on these treacherous waters."

Alex and Ana exchanged looks for a moment before Alex intoned. "Have you considered the danger that could have caused an Enclave ship to call out for help?"

"I have."

"And?"

"Sufficient preparations shall be made to account for potential problems. But that will not make me change my mind."

"I see." Alex nodded before suddenly snapping.

Vissarion frowned for a moment before his expression quickly returned to normal.

Pursing his lips, Alex intoned. "My domain gives me partial insights into the intricacies of fate and I foresee certain danger in what you plan to do."

"Those that worship the Goddess in body and soul, cannot be truly harmed at sea. So you do not have to worry." Vissarion assured before turning to take his leave.

He walked in a dignified manner, quickly disappearing from view before Alex turned to Ana.

"There’s something wrong." Ana plainly said with a slight frown.

Alex nodded. "I agree. Even knowing the dangers, he still insists on going ahead. It is strange."

"Maybe he’s being mind controlled?"

"That doesn’t seem to be the case. I utilized Mindscape but there was nothing out of place."

"But there is definitely something wrong with him." Ana intoned before adding. "I don’t believe anyone would be so eager to face danger."

"We’ll keep a close eye on him for now."

"Alright then."

"You said it yourself, the danger doesn’t seem too serious."

Athena soon shifted course, making its way toward the newly inputted coordinates received from the second note they’d gotten.

There were disgruntled comments and overall offended passengers but it did nothing to change the atmosphere or Vissarion as the latter made a few changes to things on their way to their destination.

At almost every corner, the likeness of the Goddess of the Sea, a mermaid wielding a trident with hair made of serpents, was placed with each one carved out of coral, which was considered the Goddess’s special mineral.

After almost a week, they arrived at their destination to find that they were not the only ones there.

Save for Athena, there were three other ships, made of wood and slightly smaller than the steel behemoth owned by Vissarion.

These ships were quite familiar to the captain of Athena, owing to the fact that they had all taken off from the same port and were headed in the same direction.

To think that they would run into each other again so soon.

It was quite the coincidence.
