Chapter 524: The deciding battle
Chapter 524: The deciding battle
Douglas stood in place, watching, along with Elena, Nadia, and Arwen, as Arthur engaged in conversation with one of the Enforcer Captains at the Southern outpost.
Surprisingly, if one was none the wiser, they would think the duo had a history together judging from how friendly they were acting but Douglas and the others were well aware that this was just Arthur’s charisma doing its job.
Considering they were unable to speak with the Enforcers due to the latter avoiding them like the plague, it was good that they had Arthur to help them bridge the gap.
Finally, Arthur concluded his conversation, and with one last joke, which left the captain in splits, Arthur walked over triumphantly with a satisfied smile on his lips.
"What did he say?" Douglas immediately asked once Arthur was close enough.
They had all seen the night sky and so were aware of Alex making his move.
Now they wished to know what moves BlackWatch was making to take advantage of the situation.
"The Family Heads have already gathered at BlackWatch and are currently assaulting the area behind the dark curtain. The Vampire Monarchs are there as well. It’s most likely that the deciding battle has begun. A win or a loss there now determines what happens after." Arthur calmly explained.
"Then what are we doing here?... We have to get going. We need to join the fight!"
"And do what exactly?"
Douglas looked at him like he’d asked a weird question. "To save Emily, of course. Staying here is a waste of time."
"Do you think you’d be able to make a difference if you go there?" Arthur questioned.
"We’ve been training, we can do it."
Arthur snorted. "A few days of training and you already feel like you can conquer the world. I’ll tell you now, none of you are leaving this outpost."
"What?"
"The battle at BlackWatch is not one that you can partake in as you wish. You won’t even know how you died."
"I have fought a newborn god and stood my ground against a Silver Knight Captain, do not underestimate me." Douglas coldly remarked.
Arthur managed a wry smile as he replied. "Do not let such minor victories cloud your judgment, Douglas. If not for Alex, you would have died. Do not force things, your presence there would be detrimental to Emily."
"Do not bring up her name!" Douglas bellowed. "She is waiting for me and I will go."
With that, Douglas turned to leave only for a powerful Authority to bore down on him like a weighted burden.
He dropped to his knees and found himself unable to get back up.
"You can’t even handle me, yet you wish to go to a battlefield where I would be regarded as a grunt. Do you think that your death would be good news for Emily?"
"Let me go, Arthur!"
"You will remain, Douglas, you are unworthy to fight in this battle."
"Damn it, Arthur!"
Before he could say more, Arthur stepped forward and knocked Douglas out.
Silence followed for a few seconds before Nadia spoke up. "Do you think Alex would be okay alone?"
"He isn’t alone," Arthur replied. "So he should be fine. We’ll camp here till there are changes."
With that, he picked up an unconscious Douglas and made his way toward their sleeping quarters with the ladies in tow.

"Too late."
The Monarchs didn’t even get a chance to react properly before time froze, leaving them in stasis.
At the same time, the red fog dispersed to reveal a man with serpentine features and a ridiculously tall woman with an endowed chest.
Naturally, they were Gabriel and Camille of the Abyss Wheel.
"Well, well, well, would you look at that?... The Vampire Monarchs don’t seem so tough after all." Gabriel mocked as he took steady steps forward.
Camille chuckled. "Well, we did catch them by surprise."
"Does it matter?... In mystical battles, one must be prepared for all possible scenarios. They walked headfirst into our trap."
"Oh come on, don’t mock them so much." Camille intoned before glancing at Maxius. "That fellow was quite capable, being able to push back against my attack despite being empowered by my patron."
"Does it matter now?... Come, Brenda asked that we use their hearts to fuel the banquet. With their blood, it should be enough to deal with the remainder of what we need to begin the ritual." Gabriel remarked as he made his way toward Vorigan.
Just as he got close enough, he paused as he sensed a gaze on him.
"What’s wrong?" Camille inquired.
Gabriel looked left and then right before replying. "I sense someone watching me."
"How is that possible?... There’s no one else close by, and the Monarchs are under stasis unless you have lost your touch."
Gabriel snorted. "Damn you, you are the one that’s lost touch."
He pulled out a dagger only to pause yet again as the gaze grew stronger, almost like the owner was glaring at him.
Closing his eyes, he utilized his Spirituality to scan the area, but still nothing, which caused him to feel wary.
"Camille, check around, there’s someone with us," Gabriel remarked.
"Are you being serious?"
"Just do as I say!"
"Ugh, fine."
Rolling her eyes, Camille took out a card and activated it, allowing her to detect all thoughts in the vicinity.
Even a random thought couldn’t escape her perception.
But nothing came up and so, she said. "This is a waste of time, can you just take their hearts so we can leave?"
"Nothing?"
"Yes, Gabriel, nothing."
This didn’t lessen his worry, though, as it meant the enemy was at a level that could easily evade Camille’s scan and his scrutiny.
Just as he was about to order a retreat, he paused and asked. "Wait, how did they manage to deal with that fool Elijah?"
"That..." Camille trailed off as her gaze fell on something she had ignored since her arrival.
Gabriel’s danger senses screamed for him to escape, and he didn’t hesitate to pull out a card, but before he could activate it, a great maw descended.
