Chapter 509: The bloody truth

They sat underneath a peach blossom tree in the Spirit World with the Basilisk as the arbiter.

The Monarchs sat on either end of a long stone table while Alex sat at the place of power with Victoria noticeably absent.

With the atmosphere tense as it was, Alex took a moment to gauge the inclinations of everyone present.

Gregory still harbored dreams but it seemed the others had understood that this was hardly the time to focus on their greed.

Satisfied with this, he placed a palm on the stone table and letting out a sigh, rapped his fingers on the furniture to grab their attention.

"The continent is in disarray and I believe it is safe to say that the Blood Feast orchestrated by you lot has been instrumental in allowing the Abyss to carry out its plans without any hindrance."

"Well..." Maxius tried to speak only for Alex to cut him off.

"Am I wrong?"

Silence followed before Vorigan spoke up. "The situation is a bit too complex to attribute it all to our actions."

"Still, we need to start from somewhere, so let’s start from the beginning."

The Monarchs exchanged looks with one another and after some thought, decided to allow the one most eloquent in his speech to answer.

Hopefully, he would be able to piss off the Dark Lord just like he pissed them off.

"Well..." Maxius began in a loquacious manner.

...

"I don’t understand, does Sister Crimson appear in any mythology involving the Night Kindred?" Veronica inquired with a frown as she sat across from Lucia, both having found a private room to discuss.

Lucia shook her head. "No, I found it weird that no one questioned it, including the Monarchs. The Night Kindred worship no gods, save for Lady Luna who is merely a personification of Night."

"Did you ever investigate this?"

"I didn’t think it necessary since the Monarchs didn’t do so."

Veronica pursed her lips, taking a moment to digest everything Lucia had said before speaking up.

...

"Wait a minute, Blood Feast, Sister Crimson, Bloody Night," Alex muttered as they all seemed to be linked. "If we assume this Sister Crimson is an entity that rules over the Domain of Blood and there are no Vampire gods that hold such authority, that leaves only one alternative."

"An Otherworldly." Vorigan was the one who spoke up.

Alex froze as he recalled the creature floating in the sky.

Deciding not to jump to conclusions, Alex inquired. "Have any of you seen the entity above?"

Silence followed as they exchanged looks with one another, their expressions marked with confusion as they seemed unaware of the entity lurking in the sky.

At least, most with Gregory the sole exception.

"You have seen it."

Gregory hesitated before ultimately replying. "She offered me power."

"And you accepted?"

"I thought I could control it!" Gregory bellowed, his eyes flashing a dark red with red cracks appearing on his skin.

It would seem even with Alex’s aid, he hadn’t fully escaped Sister Crimson.

Just as the Basilisk made to act, Alex snapped and focused Eternal Night on Gregory, calming him down enough to take his seat once again.

"I say we kill him before he loses his mind," Lucas suggested with the others seemingly in agreement.

Alex thought otherwise.

...

Taking a deep breath, Veronica intoned. "If I am right, then there might be a chance that the Duke that carried out the ritual to bring about the Blood Feast was corrupted by the Abyss."

"But it doesn’t make any sense, if he was, he would have said something. He was the second oldest Vampire in our ranks. Why would he be so careless?"

"The Abyss doesn’t care about age." Veronica calmly pointed out. "Even the Saints of the Warrior Wheel have been known to succumb to the madness of the Abyss."

"But still..." Lucia found it hard to accept.

Veronica shook her head. "What we need to be certain of was if he was corrupted and if he was, when. It might help us understand a bit more about what’s going on."

...

"Elijah was a good man. All he ever wished for was the return of the Dark Ages when the Night Kindred reigned supreme." Vorigan remarked.

Alex pursed his lips. "It’s clear enough that even you guys are not immune to the temptations of the Abyss. What if the Abyss or rather, Sister Crimson corrupted him while dangling before him the promise of Vampiric Supremacy."

Hesitant, Vorigan ultimately replied. "As much as it pains me to say this but... Elijah would have succumbed."

"Why did none of you react during the ritual?" Alex asked. "If he was summoning forces beyond what the Will of the World accepted, there should have been a reaction. Why did none of you react?"

They exchanged looks with one another as they questioned why that was.

Maxius was the first to come to an answer. "Elijah was a Psionic, one capable of competing with me."

"He tampered with our minds, dulled our senses to ensure we wouldn’t react negatively," Beatrice remarked, her expression sour as she realized that her mind had been tampered with.

"He may be a potent Psychic but there’s no way he should have been able to tamper with all our minds. We may be slightly vulnerable but not completely weak that we wouldn’t sense someone tampering with our minds."

"What if he had help?" Alex inquired.

"But no Otherworldly can hold dual Domains and since Sister Crimson already has Authority over the Domain of Blood..." Lucas trailed off, as though realizing something dreadful.

"It doesn’t have to be Sister Crimson," Alex remarked calmly before adding to the horror of everyone present. "The Otherworldly are working together right now."

...

"What are you trying to say?" Lucia inquired, a deep sense of apprehension welling up within.

Veronica sighed. "It would seem Duke Elijah had help from a different Otherworldly with Authority over the Domain of Psionics."

...

"Where is the Duke now?" Alex asked.

"Dead and buried in the Eastern Highlands," Vorigan replied.

Alex nodded. "Well then, if we are correct about the Blood Feast being an elaborate ruse by the Abyss to gain access to our world, that means its end should either stall this or end it completely. So, dear friends, would you like to embark on a hunt?"
