Hunter of the Evernight
Chapter 508: How much longer?

Chapter 508: How much longer?

"Is it true?... Have you located the Dark Lord?" Veronica asked as she stood before a radio transmitter with two engineers handling the connections.

There was a crackle followed by noise and then... "Yes," Lucille replied from the other end.

"And yet you said nothing?"

"There was nothing to be said."

"Lucille, the Night Kindred are looking for that man. Don’t you understand what would happen if they found him?... Even if he isn’t the sole reason they started this war, imagine allowing them to get their hands on his Domain. It would be the Dark Ages all over again."

"You underestimate the Dark Lord, Veronica, he isn’t so easy to beat."

Veronica let out a sigh as she massaged her temples. "Fine then, where is he now?... Is he under your surveillance?"

"No."

"Lucille!"

"I couldn’t stop him from leaving. He hopes to gather an army to deal with the Abyss. He claims that their actions are related to his sister."

"The Dark Lord has a sister?"

"And a brother," Lucille added. "The Battle God has met him as well."

"And?"

"He seems to have acknowledged the Dark Lord as more of an ally."

"This can’t be happening."

"For now, the most pressing matter is the Abyss and whatever it is planning with the Dark Lord’s sister. We need to deal with that."

Taking a deep breath, Veronica inquired. "Are you certain the Dark Lord does not pose an immediate threat?"

"If I wasn’t, I would have acted already."

"Alright then," Veronica remarked. "Keep me updated on the situation."

"Will do."

With that, the radio went silent and Veronica let out yet another sigh.

Just then, there was a knock at the door of the communications room after which an Enforcer stepped in.

"Report."

"The bloodsucker claims she has something important to speak to you about."

Veronica nodded. "Alright, lead the way."

The Enforcer nodded before stepping outside with Veronica following closely behind.

They arrived at the end of the hallway leading to the communications room where a large door was locked and manned by two guards.

Veronica stepped out to find Lucia waiting.

"You asked to see me."

"I did."

"So?"

Hesitant at first, Lucia buckled up the courage to speak up. "Your subordinate mentioned that the crazed vampires found on the battlefield uttered only two words."

"Sister Crimson." Veronica intoned. "Does the title sound familiar to you?"

Lucia nodded. "It does. It’s the entity we invoked to kickstart the Blood Feast."

Veronica frowned as though the information seemed useless, she couldn’t help but feel like there was something deeper at play, a conspiracy that was bigger than they could have ever imagined.

So she remarked. "Tell me more."

The blizzard froze everything it touched, ensuring that by the time it cleared up, only Alex and Charlotte, protected by Embers of Twilight, remained untouched.

The 1st Class, otherwise known as Eternal Winter, gazed upon Alex with its deep blue eyes, seemingly interested in the one that had managed to resist her.

Master, we can’t fight it. We’d lose.

"I understand that. We just need to send it back."

What do you suggest, Master?

"Just make sure nothing bothers me."

As you wish, Master.

Just then, several monsters made of snow began to emerge, screaming out profanities while glaring hatefully at Alex.

Winter is coming.

All shall fall prey to its embrace, all shall succumb to it.

Those that do not are unworthy and the unworthy should die!

And then, they attacked.

Alex snorted as he snapped his fingers, resulting in a conflagration of Embers, incinerating anything that came within several meters of his person.

Meanwhile, Eternal Winter above opened its mouth again but this time, what came out were words.

Phnlugui fthagn rehyli thraatrhi

Alex didn’t even know when he fell to the ground with blood dripping out of his seven orifices.

It reminded him of his experience in the Abyss during the clash against the Elf priestess with the long name.

To think that just a few words were enough to leave him disoriented and on the edge of madness even with Mindscape still active was telling of the difference between himself and the 1st-Class Otherworldly.

Meanwhile, Charlotte was forced to deal with the Creatures of Winter alone now that Embers could no longer be well maintained, resulting in a breach.

Taking deep breaths to recover quickly, Alex instinctively snapped, allowing him to transform into an ethereal being.

Then, he felt it, like the sting of a jellyfish, only several thousand times more painful.

He let out a scream as he transformed back to normal, collapsing to the ground as the pain struck his pneuma, causing Charlotte’s form to flicker in and out of existence.

Master!

Charlotte exclaimed as she realized that Eternal Winter was trying to take Alex with its tentacles reaching out to grab him en masse.

She moved instinctively, crossing the distance and using her blade to strike the tentacles with the intent of freeing her master.

Alas, Eternal Winter was no ordinary creature with its tentacles resisting Charlotte’s swordsmanship.

Her eyes widened in shock, she tried again only to be met with a similar result.

Before she could try the third time, Charlotte felt her form flicker out of existence again after which she was gone, leaving Alex alone and without a means to retaliate.

Alex twitched like someone who had just suffered an electrocution as the tentacles pierced his skin before proceeding to pull him up.

As he slowly began to lose consciousness, he caught sight of a figure approaching.

A blonde woman with an appearance that looked all too familiar.

She seemed to say something, though he was unsure if it was directed at him or mere soliloquy.

Then, she transformed, from a human to a regal white wolf.

He lost consciousness a moment later.

"How much longer?" Emily asked in a half-conscious state, struggling to fight back the lethargy consuming her.

Just then, she felt someone cup her face allowing her to focus on the person.

It turned out to be the blind nun, who with a radiant smile on her face, replied. "Just a day more, my child. Soon the Will of the World will succumb and at that time, you shall give birth to the Messiah."
