Chapter 504: I had a dream

Chapter 504: I had a dream

"Are there any casualties?" Veronica inquired as she stood in the Octagon, her expression a veritable mess as she waited for a response to her question.

Those standing behind, two Valkyries, Lucia and 2 Enforcer Captains, exchanged looks before one of the Captains, a lady with auburn hair cut low and dressed in the combat uniform of the D.O.D. which was grey colored overalls, stood out and intoned while holding a parchment.

"We lost 15% of Enforcer numbers, 5% of Valkyries, and..." the captain trailed off, taking a moment to glance at Lucia who seemed caught off guard by the sudden attention.

Having fought together against the creatures of the Abyss, a slight camaraderie had formed between her and those left in BlackWatch.

Her case was made even better considering her Sired were working with the uninjured in BlackWatch to tender to those who were not so lucky.

Letting out an awkward cough, Lucia intoned. "We lost only two."

"I see," Veronica muttered before turning to face the group. "As is clear for all to see, the Eastern Highlands is no longer the home of the Night Kindred and has instead been appropriated by a powerful foe for nefarious purposes."

"Is it true that this foe is a Daemon?" The other Enforcer Captain, a man with a tough exterior, inquired.

Veronica nodded. "It would seem so. If anything, his divinity doesn’t seem to have left an imprint yet which means he hasn’t achieved his Title or Celestial Form yet, which means it is possible to bring him down with adequate planning."

"But we don’t have a Godkiller, don’t we need one to hunt a divine being?" Lucia inquired, taking out the little knowledge she had on the realm of deities.

"We don’t need one." Veronica confidently replied. "The Battle God along with the other Family Heads are on their way back to BlackWatch as we speak."

"But what about the Vampires?" One of the two Valkyries present inquired.

"According to new reports, it would seem there’s something wrong."

Lucia revealed worry as she inquired. "What?"

"I don’t believe we are the only ones affected by the mad whims of the Abyss. Whatever the case, the Vampires have retreated and those that have been found seem to have lost their minds, screaming out the title, Sister Crimson."

"Sister Crimson." Lucia furrowed her brows as she didn’t know why that name sounded familiar.

It quickly became clear a moment later causing her expression to take a drastic turn.

Noting this, the other Valkyrie that had remained silent so far, questioned. "Do you know something that we do not, bloodsucker?"

Clearly, not all were accepting of the presence of vampires within BlackWatch, an understandable sentiment considering the circumstances.

Lucia was just about to respond when the doors to the meeting hall swung open with an engineer of BlackWatch rushing in, breathless and sweating rather profusely.

"What happened?" Veronica inquired, a faint sense of apprehension already welling up within.

The engineer replied. "We just received word from the Southern outpost."

"Speak."

"The Dark Lord has established a connection with Lady Lucille and claims to know what has caused the Abyss to launch its attack."

"What?"

"The message has been sent across to BlackWatch." An Enforcer Captain remarked, standing a few meters away from Lucille who seemed to be in deep meditation.

Taking a deep breath, Lucille opened her eyes and replied. "Good, make sure to keep me updated on all news sent over."

"Understood."

"You may leave."

The Enforcer Captain nodded and turned to leave only to pause, almost as though he had something on his mind.

"Speak," Lucille remarked. "Don’t let your thoughts consume you."

The Enforcer let out a sigh before turning to face her again. "Forgive my insolence, but not just me, several others have proven to be thinking the same."

"And what are you all thinking?"

"The newcomers, aren’t they subordinates of the Dark Lord?... Are they not part of the reason why the Night Kindred launched their invasion?... How is it that despite having them in our grasp, we leave them be, even going further to serve them as guests? These are people that should be chained and behind bars."

"Is that really how you feel?"

"Not just me, but several others. And now I hear that the Dark Lord has left with his Envoy?... Forgive me for saying this, Commander, but what you are doing is tantamount to spitting on the graves of the Enforcers that have died since this invasion began."

Having vented as best he could, the Enforcer Captain let out a heavy breath, waiting for Lucille to offer a response.

Instead, silence followed.

Gritting his teeth, he turned to leave and then, she spoke.

"You are right to wonder why I haven’t cut down the Dark Lord and even I wonder why as well. But Aiden spared his life and though I cannot wrap my head around why, I have come to believe that his decisions are right."

"..."

"So, I understand your anger and if I had a choice, I would not allow the Dark Lord to persist. But for now, let us trust in the Battle God’s judgment."

The Enforcer Captain struggled to accept this but knowing what he knew, he understood that there was no point in wasting time on unnecessary things.

"I’d let the others know... but there are those that have suffered loss, several even. If they do go seeking to vent, then I hope no one interferes."

Lucille remained silent and so, the captain went on his way.

Arwen didn’t think she’d get to experience what Claudia had spoken numerous times about as she walked through the southern outpost in search of Nadia.

Those eyes screamed judgment on her, filled with fear and anger along with pure unadulterated hatred.

Some tried to ignore her but the vast majority were itching to cut her apart the moment they got the order.

She couldn’t help but wonder how Claudia had managed to remain optimistic despite experiencing such a thing for several years.

Taking a deep breath, she ignored as much as she could before she finally found Nadia underneath a shade, seated on a bench while reading a book.

On closer inspection, Arwen could tell the book was no ordinary book but was instead one filled with arcane knowledge.

In any case, she walked over and upon getting close enough, Nadia raised her head to regard her.

"Arwen," Nadia muttered only to notice the expression on Arwen’s face. Frowning, she inquired. "Are you alright?... Were you harassed by one of the Enforcers?"

Arwen shook her head causing Nadia to get even more worried. "Then what is it?"

Hesitant at first, Arwen knew she had to do it and so, she intoned. "I had a dream."

Nadia’s heart skipped a beat a moment later.
