Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 491: Enemy at our doorstep
Chapter 491: Enemy at our doorstep
She’d hoped it wouldn’t happen.
Despite not being a believer, she’d prayed to the Only One God, asking that as she fell asleep, she would be greeted by his warm light.
Alas, what greeted her instead was a purple sky with crows flying about, cawing almost in joy at her presence.
It was a cruel joke, almost as though Death was mocking her for thinking he couldn’t reach her.
And so, what she’d ignored for so long, she was forced to experience yet again.
Arwen looked around, realizing that she stood within a vast and desolate landscape.
Biting down on her lower lip, she took steps forward, terrified to move but knowing that she couldn’t stay still.
The walk was agonizingly long as she found herself wondering who was going to die despite not wanting to do so.
Finally, she arrived at the center of it all, and at the center was a man, one all too familiar to not recognize and as she saw him, her heart thumped loudly as she dropped to her knees.
With a feeling of helplessness washing over her, Arwen wept.

Arthur found himself in Victoria’s study, looking down on the centerpiece which had a comprehensive map of the Empire sprawled out on it.
At certain points, markers were placed, and based on Arthur’s experience, he guessed they were locations that held herbs useful for an alchemist like Victoria.
Regardless, though he seemed to be studying the map, it was more a ruse to hide his inner thoughts.
He worried for the well-being of his countrymen, especially at a time when the Abyss seemed to have grown so bold.
Perhaps, it might do him well to send a message across, to ensure that Aragon was safe.
He wondered if it would be an affront to his oath to never return to that land.
Letting out a sigh, he shook his head only to feel a disturbance in the aether.
The next moment, the table trembled ever so slightly, a prelude to what was to come next.
Boom

"Shit," Alex muttered as he immediately glanced back at Douglas and Emily.
"What’s wrong?" Douglas asked, noting his expression.
Alex gave no response, merely rushing over to grab Emily before attempting to snap.
Alas, though black and white light appeared to swallow them for a moment, it quickly receded, leaving Alex and Emily in their respective positions.
"Did you just try to teleport with Emily?" Douglas questioned only to pause as he sensed something causing him to frown.
Alex clicked his tongue. "I’m guessing they are already here."
"Who are they?"
"The nun and whatever backup she brought with her."
The building shook, snapping Nadia out of her meditation.
"What’s going on?"
"The enemy is at our doorstep."

The scenery outside Victoria’s castle was meant to be all sunshine and rainbows for the sole fact that her Enchanted barrier allowed the mountain to be in phase, stuck in between the Physical and Ethereal.
Alas, at this point, a sinister red seemed to be attempting to break through, dying the entire area a bloody hue.
What followed was a corrosion of the beauty as it all fell apart, revealing a blood-red barrier that had surrounded the castle at some point.
Just then, three fellows emerged from the barrier, accompanied by a Slenderman who stood tall behind them.
The one who stood at the center, a humanoid male with scales and a snake-like visage, grinned. "Surprise, surprise."
He immediately pulled out a card from the void of space and with an exertion of Will, caused an illusory clock to appear in midair.
As the clock clanged and hissed with steam erupting from its sides, its hands began to turn erratically.
Below, the castle began to degrade, subjected to the touch of Time.
"Fancy." The tall lady beside him on the right, dressed in a red gown with a black wide-brimmed hat, her face obscured by a netmask, also pulled out a card and exerted her Will.
A powerful telepathic wave was unleashed, destabilizing all minds within the castle.
The blind nun, who stood at the left, her palms clasped as though in prayer, intoned. "Gabriel, Camille, be careful not to harm the Blessed Virgin."
"Hmmph, just be silent and let us work." The man, or rather, Gabriel replied as he pulled out another card.
As the castle walls turned to dust, all living beings capable of motion within ended up in a temporal lock, incapable of movement.
And so, when all cleared, what remained were Alex and his subordinates, forced to stay in place, their gaze aimed above at the trio that had subdued them so quickly.
"Well, well, is this the group the Mother of Lost Souls asked you to be so wary of?... They don’t seem to be much of a threat." Camille intoned in a coquettish tone, her lips curled in amusement as her gaze swept over Alex.
The blind nun gave no response, instead pulling out a card to subdue the pneuma of everyone below.
"You don’t think that they can escape my temporal lock, right?" Gabriel inquired with a raised brow.
The nun replied. "Merely a precaution."
Meanwhile, the Slenderman behind dropped to the ground and made its way into the castle without walls, its steps measured as it made a beeline for where Emily was.
Arthur tried to move but though his Authority was greater, it made no difference if he didn’t even get a chance to utilize it.
Same with Alex and so, none could do a thing as the Slenderman arrived before its target and with Gabriel’s permission, extricated Emily from Douglas’s grasp.
Just like that, the Slenderman moved its arm and it disappeared, making its way back into the Abyss.
"Happy now?" Gabriel inquired of the blind nun with the latter replying.
"Praise the Great Mother, Her Will be done."
With that, the trio gave one last look to those they trapped and with a mock wave, disappeared from vision.
The next moment, the dimension they were in began to collapse.
