Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 489: We are all Alex
Chapter 489: We are all Alex
The order to retreat was unexpected and even left many unwilling to do so.
But the SireBond couldn’t be broken and so, the order was obeyed without question.
The Vampires left in their numbers angered that they could no longer continue in their madness, decimating the human empire that had stood in their way for so long.
Some had begun to notice things, of course, not all were blind to the fact that something was wrong.
That the Blood Feast was no longer theirs to control.
That the Abyss had begun to rear its head amongst them.
But at the end of the day, they were too far gone to turn back.
The crimson invigorated them, plaguing them with bloodlust so potent, it didn’t take long before they turned on each other.
And so it was then that even the Night Kindred began to suffer from the Blood Feast they had wrought upon the land.

"We have to avoid doing anything that would grab her interest," Alex remarked having gotten enough of an explanation from Nadia.
Nadia shook her head. "According to the Codex, the value of all things are revealed to Amase without fail."
Alex frowned. "That would be troublesome."
What were the chances the devil wouldn’t be interested in him for his or Nadia’s identities as Errors?
Even Douglas was special, same with Elena.
Perhaps, this was the problem of picking too many special people.
But who would have thought such a problem would arrive in the first place?
Alex sighed as he massaged his temples.
Truly, one could never be fully prepared for the supernatural and what it holds.
"Douglas, Elena, none of you shall be present during the ritual. I will stay with Nadia when the time comes."
"I wish to stay, Alex." Douglas intoned. "If it comes down to it, let my soul be taken so Emily can be restored."
Alex glanced back at him. "Why do you feel the need to give up your life at the slightest thing?... Do you not value it?"
"This is Emily we are talking about, Alex, I will not hesitate to give my life in exchange," Douglas remarked without hesitation.
Seeing those eyes filled with conviction, Alex found that it was similar to his own and how he felt about his family on Earth.
Truly, Douglas was right when he claimed that Alex held little love for Emily.
If he truly cared for her, would he hesitate to give up his life?... It was a question that came with a quick answer.
Letting out a sigh, Alex nodded. "Then you shall remain."
Turning to Elena, he inquired. "Do you wish to stay as well?"
"... I will stay."
"Alright then. Go and check on Victoria, assist her in bringing the catalysts we need."
"As you wish."
With that, Elena took her leave and Nadia moved back into the magic circle and sat down at the center, before falling into deep meditation, her lips moving swiftly as she began to ritual to summon Amase.
Seeing her so peaceful, Alex took a deep breath while deciding to take a page out of his manual for life.
He snapped, causing the aether to stir and his shadow to tremble.
Out of it, three perfect replicas of himself emerged, catching Douglas momentarily off guard.
"What are you doing?" Douglas inquired.
"If the Devil plan doesn’t work, we need to make preparations for other avenues. We can’t wait for rejection until we are certain it will succeed."
"But what do you have in mind?"
Alex, all four of them, glanced at him and replied. "Going out to seek help."
The next moment, three out of the four snapped and disappeared in a flash of black and white, leaving one behind.
"Are you the real one?" Douglas asked only for Alex to respond with a smile.
"That’s the neat part, Douglas, there is no real or fake. We are all Alex."

Alex appeared in a wilderness beset by uncanny weather and an unsteady space.
The pungent smell of the Abyss assailed his nostrils as its essence caused his skin to crawl.
The aether here felt weird like it was trying its hardest to be normal while possessing traits of the fallen city of Isena Thalore.
He instinctively felt it despite not having a close connection to aether like the Cryptids.
The aether was being tainted.
But then, he was jolted from his inspection of the area by the distant sound of fighting, punctuated by gunshots and screams of men.
He moved with intent, snapping before disappearing in a flash of black and white, appearing at the gates of the Southern Ruins outpost.
At the walls facing further into the wilderness, He watched as Enforcers fought against the walking dead with the precision of trained warriors, armed with ebony blades and muskets while cannons roared with reckless abandon, targeting hordes further away.
At the helm of the undead was a being that commanded attention.
It carried an aura different from the others and seemed to be their leader.
Its first noticeable characteristic was that it had no head, followed by the fact that it wore armor and carried weapons like a man.
It also rode on a dead horse, all bone and no skin with flaming sockets for eyes.
An intimidating foe that would have sent terror rushing through the hearts of normal men.
To the Enforcers, however, it was just another undead to be put to rest.
"Why are you here?"
Alex glanced back to find the Homunculi that followed Aiden standing behind him, her weapon already drawn.
She seemed tense, which was surprising considering she was supposed to be more machine than man.
Forgoing the need to point out that he hadn’t noticed her until she was so close that she could take his head, Alex intoned. "Why aren’t you helping?"
"If those maggots can’t even take on some measly undead, there’s no reason for this outpost to exist." She remarked without hesitation. "So I ask again, why are you here?"
"I came to see Aiden. I need his help."
"The Battle God is busy and won’t be able to meet with you now."
"It’s urgent."
"More urgent than the bloodsuckers invasion and the undead infestation?" She inquired with a raised brow, almost daring him to say yes.
Of course, she would think that Alex was here for selfish reasons and though he was, there were ways to frame the subject to make it include everyone especially given the nature of the problem.
"The Abyss. It’s making a move and that move involves my sister."
