Chapter 475: The blind nun

Chapter 475: The blind nun

The Slenderman stood as scarecrows at both exits, unmoving though their ’eyes’ bored down on the trio at the center of the cavern.

Despite being regarded as 3rd-Class Otherworldly, none of the trio underestimated the Slenderman as the rankings created by man for the Otherworldly were merely based on how much damage an entity could cause in a single instance, same as with Mutants.

It was a flawed method but there was hardly a better way to go about it so no one criticized it.

Regardless, the Slenderman proved a threat to be careful of, same with the nameless nun standing at a different tunnel.

Alex was quick to run calculations to figure out their chances of winning based on the team he had.

The reason he didn’t immediately flee was due to the dilemma he found himself in concerning his progress in the Human Wheel.

He couldn’t discard moments to engage in combat as that was exactly what he needed to regain what had been lost, no matter how annoying it was.

The nun’s words were alluding to something bigger, something that could potentially tie into the war currently ravaging the Empire.

This meant getting information from her about it could perhaps provide him with a clear path to completing his pending Trials.

Alas, based on the tenets of Compatibility, Alex’s group was grossly outmatched.

Neither Douglas’s Motion nor Arthur’s tripartite control over Lava, Earth, and Heat would be able to handle the nameless nun and her control of the Domain of Souls.

Even the Slenderman behind would also prove difficult to handle as well.

With the odds stacked against them so steeply, there was only one thing left to do.

Flee.

Pa

Alex instantly snapped, light and shadow quickly emerging from his shadow to envelop the group to make a quick escape.

But then, there was a disconnect, and then... nothing.

The light and shadow receded before disappearing like a lie after which Alex felt hollow.

Confused at first, he instinctively looked at his arm to find that it was... double?

Furrowing his brows, he found that one of the double arms was illusory while the other was real.

Then, the nameless nun spoke while holding a card created with a strange material and etched with mystical inscriptions. "I had said it before, stranger. The Mother is aware of you and has given me direct instructions to be wary of your actions. Do not expect to leave so easily."

Her voice was calm yet felt like a death sentence causing Alex to frown deeply.

It seemed that during his last encounter with the Mother, he had left quite an impression on the 2nd-Class Otherworldly.

That had to be the reason why she would be so wary of him.

Regardless, now was not the time to dwell on the fact that a powerful and troublesome creature from the Abyss had its sights on him.

He thought to call out to Douglas but the Hybrid was one step ahead as he turned to hand Emily over to Alex.

Then, he disappeared with a gust of wind and appeared an arm’s length away from the nameless nun.

Alex was stunned as he wasn’t even able to follow Douglas’s movements.

Indeed, the training session he’d sent Victoria and the others out on had bore some fruit.

Alas, Douglas’ surprise attack was met with resistance as a mystical card slowly outlined itself next to the nameless nun.

Clicking his tongue, Douglas applied more pressure resulting in an audible crack catching the nun off guard... for a moment, at least.

Yet another card was immediately drawn as the nun’s body shifted between the material and immaterial, resulting in several illusory arms emerging in addition to her normal arms.

Douglas moved to confront her but alas, though he was significantly faster than the nun, he was unable to damage the spirit, causing him to continuously swing and hit the air.

A mocking smile suffused the nun’s lips at that moment as her illusory arms moved to ensnare Douglas with the latter immediately taking a step back to put some distance between him and her.

"Not so fast!" The nun declared as she took out another card and exerted her will.

Instantly, a domain unfurled before Douglas’s eyes, trapping him with the Abyss Wheel Mystic.

Meanwhile, Alex held on tightly to Emily who was currently trembling feverishly while spouting unintelligible words.

Something was happening to her and Alex could feel it.

Unfortunately, he was no expert on soul-related matters and neither was Arthur.

Then, the Slenderman moved, both bodies dropping into the cavern before melding into one towering entity after which it turned invisible.

A look of terror instantly emerged on Alex’s face as he was struck with a familiar feeling of weakness in the face of danger.

He snapped instinctively but the nun’s sorcery was still active, rendering him impotent.

"Fuck!"

Before he could drop into full-blown panic, there was a howl, then a low rumble followed by stone walls emerging all around him.

He glanced at Arthur who remarked.

"I’ll try to deal with the card stopping your teleportation. Try not to let your pneuma leave you before then."

Then the walls closed and Alex was trapped within with a raving Emily.

Cursing his current weakness, he decided not to focus on what he couldn’t do and instead, on what he could do while also reminding himself that he would have to come up with an ability that defended against soul manipulation once he recovered from his current state.

Meanwhile, Arthur wasn’t foolish enough to think he could handle the Slenderman.

The Slenderman was like a pseudo ghost as though it could be hindered by physical obstructions, only a spiritual or at least a conceptual attack would be able to truly damage it and that was something Arthur was lacking in.

So there was only one thing he could do and so he did, turning and rushing to where Douglas and the nameless nun were facing off.

However, he soon found that even that was a dead end as a sealed domain appeared before his eyes.

Clicking his tongue, he walled up the way behind him with a howl to prevent sudden attacks before proceeding to let out yet another howl, this one strained and filled with a frightening amount of power.
