Chapter 474: Unworthy

Chapter 474: Unworthy

"Please, come with me now, I promise to take you to a safe place." The nun remarked with a warm smile, causing Emily to feel uneasy as she leaned into Douglas.

Noting this, Douglas was quick to use his body to shield Emily while placing his gaze on the nun.

The nun’s expression shifted at this point as she inquired. "What’s wrong, my dear?... Is everything okay?... Why do you seem scared?"

Emily hesitated but ultimately intoned, her voice echoing in the cavern. "Are you speaking to me?"

"Of course!" The nun loudly replied. "Who else is worthy to serve as the Mother of our Messiah."

At this point, Alex was struggling to understand what the nun was talking about while Arthur busied himself trying to figure out if the nun was alone.

With each passing moment, his expression turned grim.

"Messiah?... I don’t understand, what are you talking about?... I’m not a mother, I don’t even have a boyfriend."

"Of course, no mortal man has the right to desecrate your purity. Your pregnancy is one ordained by the gods, child. You should be able to hear it, right?... Can’t you hear our Messiah’s cries?"

Emily hesitated with Douglas turning to face her.

"Do you hear anything?"

"... Yes." Emily softly replied, causing Douglas’s expression to distort drastically.

Meanwhile, the nun on hearing Emily’s response exclaimed with joy. "O glory, this is wonderful. You don’t know how jealous I am of you, my dear. You have been chosen by the Messiah to be his mother. Such a great privilege!"

"Douglas, I’m scared. What’s going on?" Emily remarked in a trembling tone with Douglas quickly embracing her.

"Don’t worry, I’m here. Nothing will happen."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

Suddenly, Emily let out a slight groan as she felt movement in her stomach.

Douglas glanced down and was about to touch her stomach only for the nun to suddenly scream out. "Stop!"

It was a sharp screech, causing slight discomfort to those who heard it as it echoed within the cavern walls.

"You are unworthy." She softly added after she’d calmed down.

"I’ll have to ask you to explain a few things for me, Miss. Firstly, who are you?" Alex inquired as he took a step forward.

The nun replied with reverence. "A nameless daughter of the Mother."

"What mother?... You’ve been mentioning that title a lot."

"Only because without her, I would be nothing. She is the benevolent mother that has no children of her own but that takes in the lost, the broken, and the hated into her bosom. She loves all equally. She..."

"Enough with the sermons and just give me a name."

The nun wasn’t offended at being interrupted as she beamed. "The Mother I refer to is beautiful beyond compare. She is the Mother of Lost Souls."

As she uttered the title, the nun seemed to revel in joy as she turned her face upwards, seemingly imagining the serene beauty of the entity she was referring to.

Meanwhile, Alex paused as for some reason that title sounded oddly familiar.

Same with Douglas as he turned to look at Alex with the latter turning to meet his gaze.

Immediately, it clicked.

The Mother of Lost Souls.

The Otherworldly they had come across during their brief stint in Townsend.

But then, Alex’s realization was slightly deeper than Douglas’s own due to the weird nun’s consistent mention of a child and Emily’s involvement with said child.

He recalled that on that fateful night 4 months ago, Emily’s womb had been occupied by quite a few ghost babies.

Back then, he hadn’t been able to do anything about them and so could only watch helplessly as they caused Emily to become their host.

Considering the Mother of Lost Souls had been repelled, Alex had thought that everything that happened in Townsend would be reversed.

But what if it hadn’t been reversed?... What if it had just gone dormant?

But then why would it awaken now?... With so many questions, Alex decided to head back first to ask a certain Vampire subordinate an important question.

Just then, Arthur intoned. "Alex, we have to leave now."

"Why?"

"We are surrounded."

Alex frowned before glancing at the two other tunnels connected to the cavern to find a Slenderman standing at each one.

Douglas seemed to have realized the situation they were in as well as he picked up Emily before moving to join Alex and Arthur.

"Hand over the Blessed Virgin. She must come with me to prepare for the moment of the Messiah’s birth." the nun suddenly remarked, her tone rather amiable.

"Like hell, I’ll hand Emily over." Douglas snarled, prepared to utilize Motion at a moment’s notice.

The nun, unbothered by the hostility shown, calmly intoned. "You may come along. To my understanding, you and the strange man over there are siblings of the Virgin Mother. You are welcome to join in the celebration on the condition that you accept the teachings of the Mother."

"I don’t think you understood what I just said so allow me to spell it out for you; over my dead body will Emily go anywhere with you deranged bastards."

"I will have you understand that you do not have a choice in the matter. The Blessed Virgin shall come with me." The nun remarked a bit more forcefully.

"Else what?"

"Else, you all die."

Then there was a surge of authority and Alex staggered back.

His pneuma had been agitated by a simple release of authority.

Once again, he recalled why the mad old lady from Townsend had been so hard to defeat despite being only an early Lock Abyss Wheel Mystic.

***

Jeanne had chosen to come to the Southern Ruins for the sole purpose that she was insane.

Also, she found the concept of challenging the most powerful man below divinity in Eventide quite novel.

She’d thought with a single tentacle of the Greatest Evil Above the Veil supporting her, she would be able to beat back the Battle God and prove herself a worthy champion of her patron, the Scion of Light.

But she’d been wrong, so very wrong.

Which was why as she ’stood’, battered and bruised, despite being in her abyssal form which appeared as a barely humanoid figure with unusually long and thin arms with a malformed face and a lower body composed of tentacles born of pale light, she regretted her decision.

She hadn’t even been able to force him to utilize what they’d called the Armory of God which was said to be the greatest power a Battle God could call upon.

In the end, just like those before her that had thought themselves worthy, her head toppled to the ground with a dull thud.

She was finished and most importantly, unworthy.
