Hunter of the Evernight
Chapter 472: Who would have thought?

Chapter 472: Who would have thought?

Natasha made her way through the mostly empty snow-covered streets of the border city of Parafall lit up by tottering gas lamps, accompanied by a frantic Harry struggling to keep up.

She would walk past the occasional tramp and though tempted to do something for them, she knew there was hardly anything to be done.

This war had eviscerated the already glaring problems of the Empire which made the rich richer and the poor poorer.

The number of vagrants that persisted in dirty alleys and abandoned buildings had increased since the Nighteye turned crimson, with some emerging from within the city’s middle and lower class who could no longer keep up with the rising prices and lacking resources while the others were from neighboring cities and towns that had been ruined by the vampires.

Letting out a sigh causing white mist to escape her lips, Natasha couldn’t help but think back to the twilight weeks of BoneHaven.

She understood that it wouldn’t be long before these people would turn on the upper class for treating them even worse than animals.

With such an outcome already established, Natasha couldn’t help but wonder; did the Empire have any hope of surviving the month of Astra this year?

That question would remain unanswered till further notice, unfortunately.

But as things stood, the chances of survival were strikingly low.

Regardless, she tossed her thoughts aside as she arrived at a clothing shop closer to the noble district that housed the local D.O.D.

The receptionist, a middle-aged man dressed like a butler, reminded Natasha of Arnold who had served as an assistant to the Omen of Great Disasters back then in BoneHaven.

Thinking about him, a faint hint of melancholy emerged as he was long deceased, dying in the chaos that occurred during the first appearance of the Whisperers.

Meanwhile, the receptionist rose to his feet upon noticing her before greeting in an amiable tone.

"Hello, Miss, what can I do for you..."

"I’m Captain Natasha of the Wandering Enforcer division. I’d like to speak to the man in charge here." As she spoke, she flashed her badge ensuring the receptionist asked no further questions, and instead nodded before proceeding to do as she’d asked.

Soon enough, he returned. "You can head down."

"Thank you."

With that, she went to the back of the store with Harry still following closely behind.

Utilizing the elevator hidden quite thoroughly, she made her way down.

On getting to the base below, she was immediately met with what could only be described as chaos as officers of the Department ran around like dogs with their tails on fire, receiving correspondence while sending across some of their own.

At the center of the chaotic mess was a muscular man who at first glance, might be mistaken for a bodybuilder due to his incredible physique.

He was dressed in a buttoned-up white shirt with suspenders and khaki trousers with a revolver on his waist.

Currently, he was in discussion with a smaller woman while holding a file in one hand.

Natasha didn’t hesitate to walk up to him.

Noticing her approach, he shooed the woman he was speaking with away before moving toward her.

"Commander Leslie Eland." He introduced himself with a brief flash of his badge prompting Natasha to do the same.

"Captain Natasha reporting for duty."

"At ease." The man remarked before inquiring as he shot her a scrutinizing stare. "You look familiar, Miss Natasha. Tell me, what is your last name?"

Natasha hesitated at first but knowing that this was hardly the time for sentiment, she replied. "Silverthorn."

"Now I remember." The man intoned, nodding with understanding.

Expecting something more, Natasha found that the man was hardly in the best state as he intended.

"As much as I’d like to have my fun with the first and only female of the Warrior Wheel, as you can see, I’m very busy right now. State your business."

"I heard about the Incursion, Commander. Is it true?"

"What do you think?"

"As serious as the Great Calamity from over 300 years ago?"

Leslie clicked his tongue. "We are facing a catastrophe of epic proportions, Miss Natasha. If the only reason you are here is to ask questions, I’d advise you to meet someone else and stop wasting my time."

"I’m here to help. My team and I are ready to be deployed." Natasha replied.

Letting out a sigh, Leslie spoke a bit more respectfully. "So far, we haven’t gotten any news but chances are we might have to redeploy some of our troops to handle the Incursions before they get out of hand."

"No engagements yet?"

"We received word from our people in the Southern Ruins. The Battle God is currently in battle along with his Homunculi."

"For the Battle God to fight alongside his Homunculi..."

"It tells you the gravity of the situation. Regardless, you can hang around for now. The situation could change at any time and you might have to get on an airship."

"I’m ready."

Satisfied with her response, Leslie turned to leave only for a tense worker to rush at him with a file.

"There’s news, commander."

"What is it?"

"It’s the undead."

"What about them?"

"They are converging."

"What?"

"All undead are making their way to the Eastern Highlands."

Leslie trembled as Natasha inquired. "All?... Including those from other places apart from the Empire?"

The worker slowly nodded, his expression showing him to be on the brink of tears. "That is what our spies abroad are claiming."

"We have to prepare to deter them from the city." Natasha immediately suggested.

"That’s not possible, Natasha," Leslie remarked with a grimace. "We are covered on both sides by a mountain range. If the undead want to pass... they will surely pass through the city."

And with that revelation, silence followed as Natasha pondered its implications.

"Who would have thought there’d be a day like this?" An auburn-haired woman, wearing a white shirt along with a kilt and high boots, muttered while seated in a lotus position.

All around her were rocks, some big and others small, with barely enough space to move around in, though she didn’t mind much as her stature was on the petite side.

The tiny cavern was lit up by a glowing red orb filled with immense vitality.

Within, the screams of depraved souls could be heard with vague humanoid faces appearing at the surface intermittently.

Ignoring the screams, she continued to softly stroke the orb while her soliloquy continued unhindered. "It surely is glorious. A time when all come together to celebrate the birth of the Savior. Ah, I can’t wait."

Meanwhile, above, the crimson glow of the Nighteye thickened, almost as though its surface had been covered by a sea of thick, pungent blood.
