Chapter 464: Carrying out the Dark Lord’s wish
Victoria and Lucia stood on opposing ends, their attention drawn to what was once Lestat.
The grotesque tree stood in place, its abyssal aura seeking to taint the air about it though it did nothing else.
It didn’t even seem capable of movement but history had taught denizens of Eventide to never attribute logic to things from that depraved place.
After a rather long bout of silence, Lucia finally spoke, her tone respectful. "Miss Envoy..."
Victoria raised a hand, silencing her as she kept her gaze on the tree born out of flesh, blood, and bones. "We need to destroy it."
Nadia was about to step forward but Arwen beat her to it.
"Let me handle it."
The duo exchanged looks before Nadia conceded, taking a step back while Arwen continued forward, her silver hair billowing in the cold wind.
Everyone had their eyes on her causing her to grow nervous but she maintained her pace until she was merely an arm’s length away.
Then, she sensed it.
Despite the grotesque nature of the tree before her, it held something inside... an unbelievable amount of life force that not even Vampires could possess.
Her mind raced as she pondered the Otherworldly that could potentially be connected to the tree.
After much thought, she found that she may have to revisit her edition of the Neque Adnales for further study.
Taking a deep breath, she conjured a pale flame in her palm before reaching out to touch the tree with it.
The moment the pale flame came in contact with the tree, the reaction was akin to what would happen should an open flame come in contact with fuel.
Boom
Arwen was sent flying by the shockwave, only saved from crashing into the ground by Douglas’s timely intervention.
"Are you alright?" The hybrid inquired in a concerned tone.
Arwen nodded. "Yes, thank you."
The other members of Constellations rushed to join them while Lucia and her subordinates stared at the tree as it was devoured by the pale flame at a rapid rate.
"Is this the power of a subordinate under the Dark Lord?" Lucia couldn’t help but wonder as she shifted her gaze toward Arwen.
Just as she thought to approach the Envoy and her party, a pained screech erupted from the grotesque tree, catching everyone off guard.
Turning their attention towards it, they watched as the tree slowly turned animated, struggling to fight back against the pale flames devouring it.
Alas, its struggle was in vain as Arwen’s flames thrived in the presence of life and unfortunately for it, it has a tremendous amount.
The tree broke apart, crashing with a dull thud as it slowly turned to ashes before the flames finally dissipated.
Silence followed for for a few seconds after which Victoria addressed Lucia.
"Why are you here?"
Lucia paused, having not expected the question but then again, it made sense for the Envoy to ask.
"My mistress wishes to meet with you."
Victoria’s expression shifted. "Is that so?... And what if I tell you that I won’t be able to honor her request?"
Behind her, Douglas and the rest were already preparing themselves for a fight.
Lucia deigned to respond but paused, her expression shifting as a strange sensation emerged within her.
"Is there a problem?"
Hesitant at first, Lucia replied. "I should be forcing you to come along, after all, it is an order from my mistress."
"But?"
"But I am no longer compelled to do so," Lucia remarked.
Victoria furrowed her brows. "The only reason you’d feel that way is if..."
"My mistress is dead," Lucia muttered, unsure of how to feel about the news.
Her freedom had always been guaranteed under The Bloodrose Monarch as unlike the others like Gregory, Serena was not as controlling.
But then again, Lucia was a true believer.
She believed in the prophecy of the Dark Lord and had even sworn allegiance to his cause.
So attempting to harm his chosen did not sit well with her.
Hence, after much internal struggle, Lucia turned to face her subordinates, all of whom were staring at her, awaiting her command.
Under normal circumstances, they should have attacked her for daring to resist the order of their mistress but they hadn’t done so.
Truly, something had happened to her mistress.
"I will have to return now," Lucia remarked.
Victoria nodded. "Go well. If it is truly the case that your Monarch is dead. I advise you to take up her mantle."
"Why?"
"You would serve as a good means to convince the Eastern Highlands that the Dark Lord is not our enemy."
"I see," Lucia remarked before turning to face Victoria. "Is this His wish?"
"It is."
Lucia nodded. "Then I shall carry it out with diligence."
"That is wonderful," Victoria remarked, her lips curled in satisfaction.
Offering a courteous bow, Lucia left with her subordinates, allowing those of Constellations to be alone once again.
"Well, that was a lot to handle," Elena remarked at the side with Victoria nodding.
"I agree. It would seem our exploits on the battlefield are drawing attention from the Monarchs."
Spitting to the side, she added with disgust. "heathens, the whole lot. To think that they would covet the powers of the Dark Lord."
Nadia and Arwen exchanged a look though none deemed it necessary to say anything.
They had all gotten used to Victoria’s devotion to Alex by now.
"What do we do?" Douglas inquired.
"We return. The emergence of that abyssal tree requires the attention of the Master. He will decide our next course of action."
"I guess it’s time to head home then," Nadia remarked.
Stepping forward, Elena intoned. "Everyone grab on."
The next moment, a golden flash emerged, taking them away from the forest.

Alex watched his pneuma slowly rise to its feet but this offered him no comfort as he instinctively sensed that something was wrong.
His pneuma stared at him for a moment, its eyeless sockets causing Alex to raise his guard as he took a step back.
But then, could he really leave things as they were?
Before he could find the answer to that, it attacked, rushing at him like a mindless zombie.
