Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 452: Trouble comes knocking
Chapter 452: Trouble comes knocking
Victoria had never considered her vampirism a mistake.
It was a blessing, especially for an alchemist like her who bemoaned the short lifespan of humans, preventing most from accomplishing enough during their lifetime.
In a way, she’d gotten herself infected to enjoy the eternal life Vampires were bestowed with.
Of course, if she had a choice, she would have chosen someone else to be sired to.
Her first few years as a Creature of the Night had been less than ideal under the thumb of Lestat who was equally sired to Monarch Gregory.
It was a known fact that most Vampires would usually take on the characteristics of their Sire, most likely to appease them.
She hated that she’d nearly lost herself in the reverie that came with pleasing Lestat and moving according to his whims.
The only reason he’d let her go was because no matter how much he tried, she was never able to fully embody the femme fatale he wanted.
He’d tossed her aside for being a ’defective woman’, as he’d put it.
It was only after she’d lost his controlling voice that she managed to find her own and in that moment, it all became clear to her.
To think that she would come face to face with him once again.
The desire to make him pay for all those years of torment and torture forced her to make the ultimate decision and so as she held his heart in her claws, she felt satisfied.
But just as she made to pull the heart out, to revel in her easily earned triumph, a voice cut through the silence.
"Do you see, Lestat, this is what would have happened should you have moved as you wished."
The voice was cold, intelligent... calculating.
The others seemed to hear it too as they all put up their guard, their eyes narrowed as they inspected their surroundings.
The voice continued. "You have only one choice, dear Envoy of the Dark Lord. Do not resist, I would hate to harm you."
It felt omnipresent, almost like the one speaking was everywhere and nowhere.
But that was a capability attributed to gods.
So what exactly was going on?
Nadia, utilizing her extensive knowledge of mysticism related to vampires and their characteristics, instinctively remarked.
Abrogatio
There was nothing, no reaction affirming that her spell had affected the aether.
Then she intoned calmly though it was clear that she was anything but. "This isn’t real."
"What?" The others, hearing her words, turned to her for an explanation.
"We are in an illusion of some sort." She explained, looking around as she added. "There has to be a border. That’s the only way we can escape."
"Illusions?" Victoria muttered only for her expression to crumple. "A Mind Vampire."
Before they could make any further observations, Nadia dropped to the ground, her form quickly turning illusory.
"She’s dying!" Arwen screamed out, her death senses blaring as Nadia was close to dissipating.
Confused and in a state of turmoil, the essence of Evernight, shaped as a cloak, helped keep them calm long enough for someone to step up.
Elena was the one to do so.
"If it’s an illusion of the mind..." Before she could complete her statement, she also dropped to the ground, her form quickly dissipating.
It would seem the creator of the illusion had no qualms about dispatching those who dared to cause a nuisance.
Douglas and Arwen turned to Victoria who in turn found herself unsure of what to do.
In the Vampiric triumvirate, if Blood Controllers were considered the most powerful offensively and Spiritomancers were considered the most versatile, the Psionics were considered the most difficult to guard against.
As she had never found herself facing off against a proficient Psionic like this, she was ill-equipped to handle it properly.
But the reason for coming out was exactly to gain experience in various forms of combat.
Hence, taking a deep breath, Victoria made her decision.
"I apologize, Master, but I have to do this."
Then she drew on Alex’s Power, utilizing the mystery of Evernight otherwise known as Mindscape to break through the illusions they were in.
The first thing that appeared in her vision was a man with blood-red hair and similar-colored eyes donning silver armor with a spear primed to strike.
’Silver Knight!’ Victoria cried out alarmedly as she instinctively reacted, reaching out to hold the Knight’s wrist though he was quicker, impaling her chest in one swift motion.
Victoria slammed into the ground, a spear sticking out of her chest as her crimson blood dyed the grass beneath her.
To the left and right of her, the impaled bodies of Nadia and Elena, slowly bleeding out lay quietly while Douglas and Arwen were on their knees, about to join them.
Ahead, Lestat stood but was not alone as he was accompanied by a Silver Knight though compared to the one that had impaled Victoria, that one was adorned with a much more noble armor while possessing an aura that far surpassed Lestat’s.
A Silver Knight Captain.
To think that Lestat would come with a contingent of Silver Knights, it seemed Gregory had no desire to take any chances in her capture.
She grimaced as she tried to pull out the spear, it was harder than it looked.
Meanwhile, Lestat, his expression twisted in dread, sneered once he saw Victoria in her sorry state.
"To think that you would try to kill your Sire. Disgusting." He remarked coldly.
The Silver Knight Captain, ignoring Lestat’s cold demeanor born out of a sense of fear, approached Victoria who met his gaze unflinchingly.
"I doubted it at first but in that brief moment before you destroyed my entrapment, I sensed the burgeoning power of the Night. You truly are his Envoy."
"Will that fact make you remove the spear in my chest?"
"Unfortunately not." The Captain replied with a slight shake of his head. "Though it isn’t enough to kill you, it is enough to ensure that you do not turn out problematic."
"And the other two?... They aren’t Vampires."
"They are of no consequence. Only you, my dear Envoy, are important and you shall lead us to the Dark Lord."
