Hunter of the Evernight
Chapter 451: Truth

Chapter 451: Truth

"How long will she be out for?" Alex calmly inquired as he picked up Ana in a princess carry.

She was quite light for a dragon.

"I can’t be certain. The Vow was tied to her very existence. To destroy it even with my permission would leave significant scars on her. It will be a while before she awakens."

"And if I could heal those scars?"

"Then perhaps in a day or two."

Alex nodded in satisfaction. "That’s alright."

Then, he added, "Thank you."

"Hardly would a man be willing to utter those words to another man if put through the same thing I put you through."

"It doesn’t matter. You helped my cause and if all I need to pay is a beat down, then that’s fine by me."

Aiden nodded as he took note of Alex’s words.

"In any case, your information about the Fountain was quite useful." Alex calmly added. "I’d found myself at a bit of a crossroads as to what Branch to go after next."

"I’d presume your werewolf bloodline would have pointed you in the direction of one."

"It may or may not have crossed my mind. In any case, my werewolf bloodline is mostly sealed with only a slight portion merging with my humanity."

"Ah, would you like for me to destroy the seal?"

"You can do that?" Alex inquired, brows raised.

Aiden nodded. "Indeed. This may be shocking but the seal currently hiding your Cryptid bloodline is one only known to Warrior Wheel Mystics."

"Curious."

"Curious indeed how one of our seals would find its way into your life. It makes me wonder if..." Trailing off, Aiden seemed to decide against speaking further.

"Don’t plan on saying more?"

Aiden shook his head. "It is a dumb thought of mine. I doubt it’s possible anyway."

"What is?"

"I apologize for wetting your curiosity so casually. I understand it can be quite annoying to be left halfway through."

"Glad you aren’t completely oblivious."

Aiden managed a smile. "I wish you good luck in your endeavors, Alexander, you will need it."

"Thank you," Alex replied. "And if it ever comes down to it..."

"Hmm?"

"Don’t worry." Alex feigned regretfulness. "There is no point in saying any more."

Aiden chuckled at the poor attempt at a payback from Alex.

"I’ll be taking my leave now. See you when I see you, Aiden."

As Alex made to snap, Aiden suddenly remarked, almost like he’d just recalled something.

"What?"

"One more thing," Aiden remarked as his tone turned quite grave. "Beware the Guardians."

Alex furrowed his brows, pondering if this was an attempt by Aiden to get back at him.

"I would say more if I could, however... the aether is currently listening."

And indeed, a moment passed before the surge of aether in the air grew quite dense, seemingly warning Aiden against whatever else he wished to say.

"Thank you for the warning." Alex sincerely remarked having realized that he may have just gotten an important piece of information.

He promptly snapped, disappearing in a flash of black and white, leaving Aiden all alone in the ruins.

Letting out a sigh, Aiden felt the pressure surrounding him dissipate allowing him to breathe properly once again.

"Damn... even now I can do nothing." He muttered, a self-deprecating chuckle escaping his lips.

Moments passed before he left as well, allowing the ruins to return to their usual silence.

However, it didn’t take long before the aether began to fluctuate, its currents thrown off course by the corruptive air of the Abyss.

Alex returned to Victoria’s mansion with Ana in his hands, her current peaceful expression a stark contrast to her otherwise bubbly personality.

As he walked to her room, intending to put her to rest, he found himself pondering Aiden’s words which were enough to cause the aether to stir as it did.

Despite the pressure not being focused on him, he could sense that had Aiden said more, the possibility of the Battle God suffering severe injuries was quite high.

What did this mean for him?... The Guardians, according to what Alex understood, referred to those that allowed Mystics to turn the Immortal Wheels while giving out the Trials meant to define each Lock.

The Immortal Wheels were thought of as a means to achieve powers to enable humans to protect themselves from the powers that be but what if that wasn’t the case?

What if there was something bigger at play?... Something that worked detrimental to humanity.

It made him ponder the origin of Mysticism while also recalling how he had wondered why it felt like mysticism carried more dangers for humans than it did for other races.

Finally, the words spoken by the Witch of Fables resonated in his mind, bringing him to an abrupt halt.

If he pulled everything together, it came to a single conclusion; modern-day Mysticism was bad for humans.

It wasn’t in humanity’s best interest and it seemed to be for a different purpose altogether.

Almost immediately, the aether in the air began to stir causing Alex to immediately cease all thought.

He had indeed touched on a truth of the world.

What did that signify in the long run?... How was he to navigate the path ahead knowing that the powers he carried were more detrimental than useful?

Taking a deep breath, he decided it necessary to reach out to the Witch of Fables as soon as possible.

Perhaps, she might be able to shed more light on the matter.

***

It was dark, so dark that he couldn’t see anything, not even his own hands as he stretched them out before him.

A deep sense of dread welled up from within, enveloping him in an ineluctable embrace.

Unwilling to remain still, He roamed about like a headless chicken, searching for a source of light as he feared that the darkness would sooner devour him should he not do so.

Soon, he found the light but it was hardly the type he was looking for.

It burned with a multicolored effervescence and moved as though alive.

Then suddenly, he saw a face, it was a familiar one, one that brought back memories better left forgotten.

"Do you want to hear the truth?" The burning man said, his voice laced with a hint of madness.

He screamed and a moment later, awoke.
