Hunter of the Evernight
Chapter 426: Goddess of Despair

Chapter 426: Goddess of Despair

"Mas... I mean, Lady Victoria... You can’t be serious, right?" The only male in their group asked.

Ara, or rather, Victoria glanced at Douglas. "Is there a problem?"

"We can’t kill a god, we aren’t equipped with a Godkiller."

"That is indeed correct, which is why we shall be suppressing it."

"Lady Ara, I have to agree with Lupus, there’s no way we can beat a god, even a newborn one."

"Unfortunate. The Master sent you all out to gain experience in combat yet you bring up excuses. I couldn’t be more disappointed."

"But..."

"If you can do nothing, return to the castle, I shall say no more than that."

Silence followed as the four exchanged looks with one another.

Meanwhile, Natasha looked on in confusion, unsure of what to make of the perplexing drama happening in front of her.

But then, there was yet another tremor and the malevolent force surged once more causing even more undead to rise from their slumber.

"Fine then, let’s do it." Nadia was the first to cede followed by Douglas ceding his argument.

Poised to act, Natasha spoke up. "Let me help you."

All five, including Victoria, glanced at her.

Caught off guard by their reactions, Natasha froze initially before quickly regaining her composure. "I can craft a sealing mechanism that should be able to trap the newborn. It might not kill it but it would ensure it doesn’t carry out any form of massacres."

"If it remains alone long enough, it would die out from a lack of faith especially since it’s still a Phantom," Nadia muttered with Natasha nodding in agreement.

"Exactly."

"Then begin the crafting. What materials do you need?" Victoria inquired.

"I just need time," Natasha remarked, relieved that they would accept her help.

"Noted," Victoria remarked. "Take your time, we shall hold back the evil god."

"Alright."

With their arrangements sorted, Victoria led the Constellation members toward the birthplace of the evil god while Natasha got to work creating the seal.

Douglas was the first to arrive, his control over Motion giving him an edge in speed compared to the others.

He was immediately met with the grotesque sight of several corpses with pained expressions piled up like livestock, their bodies possessing horrifying wounds no doubt as a result of attacks from the undead.

At the center of the mess was a fleshy cocoon that throbbed like a heartbeat with umbilical cords that were attached to snow-covered buildings that were still standing around the area.

Unsure of how to approach the sight, Douglas decided on brute forcing his way through and so supercharged his body before rushing forward.

Bam

It felt like running into an impenetrable wall as he was sent flying back from the resulting shockwave.

As he struggled to get back up, Victoria arrived and just in time as well, as the cocoon throbbed loudly, releasing a wave of malevolence that left Douglas with an annoying headache.

"It’s done," Victoria muttered with a frown as the cocoon showed signs of breakage.

The next moment, a hand appeared, and then another, then another, and yet another, with all four pulling at the hems of the breakage.

Victoria immediately chanted.

Open sesame.

The next moment, Opal leaped out of the spirit portal that formed and dashed toward the cocoon before utilizing its thread to seal up the breakage.

Alas, this was but a temporary solution as the cocoon soon fell apart on its own, revealing the abomination within.

It looked feminine with long hair that reached its ankles and perfect features causing it to resemble a doll.

Its skin was illusory, almost like a ghost with two hands kept over its face, obscuring its features while another two were wrapped around her waist.

It sobbed silently like a little girl causing those who looked upon it to be overcome with a deep sense of sadness.

Victoria remained in place, her gaze transfixed on the newborn deity only for a moment before she was forced to look away.

Just then, a golden flash erupted followed by the emergence of Elena alongside Nadia and Arwen.

"Do we attack?" Arwen inquired as she glanced at Victoria for answers.

"Is there a need to?... I mean, we plan to stall, right?... She doesn’t seem to plan on moving."

Douglas was poised to agree with Nadia’s sentiment only for Elena to speak up.

"We can’t do that."

"Hmm?"

"It’s gathering strength."

"What are you talking about?"

"That thing is drawing faith from the sorrows of the world!" Elena exclaimed in apprehension causing the others to finally understand what she meant.

They all glanced at the feet of the unmoving deity only to find that its body was no longer as illusory as when it first appeared.

"The world is filled with enough sorrow as is..." Arwen muttered, with Nadia adding.

"There won’t be a point in keeping it alone if it can just siphon all the sadness in the world."

"A potential Demon God," Victoria commented at the side.

Then the evil god spoke, its divine words stirring the aether and imprinting its intent on the surrounding area.

All I know is pain... sadness, sorrows, anguish... All must feel pain, all must know pain.

Despite not intending to, every single Constellations member found themselves drawn into their painful pasts, leaving them immobile for a moment.

Then the evil god sprouted a pair of butterfly wings before it moved, aiming for Arwen’s unmoving body as a potential host.

However, just as it came close, a word escaped the lips of the Banshee.

"Ignite."

The evil god erupted in pale flames causing it to veer off course in shock.

It looked back to find that Arwen and the others had already recovered.

"These cloaks are quite useful." Nadia praised before proceeding to chant in deviltongue.

Abrogatio

The next moment, the sky above lit up as a miniature Lightbringer emerged, its golden rays like a breath of fresh air in this crimson-lit land.

The evil god shifted in discomfort, its illusory state offering it little protection from the purifying light of the celestial body.

As it turned to flee, sensing its opponents to be a bit too troublesome, it suddenly found itself trapped in a dimensional maze that crisscrossed as far as the eyes could see.

It turned livid in an instant.

Almost in response to its emotional state, the world bent to its will and the authority it wielded erupted in all directions, destroying the maze in one single wave.

A brilliant display of strength that came at a cost as its body once again turned illusory.

Angered by this, the newborn deity turned toward the group troubling it and opened its mouth, its appendage extending more than what was humanly possible.

From its gaping maw erupted a screech that caused them to back away in discomfort, their emotions once again stirred as they experienced varying forms of melancholy.

However, that was it.

Perhaps due to its newborn state, its Miracles were limited and related to manipulating emotions, which made it a bad fit for Constellations as they were all equipped to combat emotional and mental disruptions.

Regaining themselves, Victoria remarked. "Restrain it, now."

Douglas was the first to move at her command, clasping his palms as he utilized Motion to restrict the movement of the newborn.

It easily broke through the restriction but that was merely the start as Nadia chanted yet again.

Abrogatio

The next moment Arwen appeared behind it and covering herself with pale flames, embraced the deity and wrapped her legs around it.

Then, Elena appeared and grabbed the evil god before sending it to Purgatory along with Arwen.

Taking a deep breath, Elena reached out and pulled, enabling Arwen’s escape from Purgatory after she’d abandoned the deity there.

Just then, Natasha arrived. "I’ve made the seal..."

Trailing off, she found no trace of the expected evil god.

"Where is it?" She inquired as she turned to Nadia for answers.

Pursing her lips to think of an appropriate response, Nadia soon replied. "Gone?"
