Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 357: Headache
Chapter 357: Headache
It wasn’t until several hours later before Alex paused writing, the bottle of ink he utilized almost completely exhausted.
Placing the quill down, he raised his head, only then realizing that the Lightbringer had long since closed, its golden rays replaced by the lavender glow of the Nighteye.
"Incredible." He muttered subconsciously, relishing the excitement that came with learning.
Perhaps, because there was an underlying goal behind it, Alex didn’t see it as a chore and enjoyed the stimulation it brought to his mind.
The whole process of chasing knowledge didn’t look so complicated now.
Chuckling softly, he thought to take out another bottle of ink to continue while the iron was still hot only for his gaze to trail to the grandfather clock placed in a corner of the expansive office.
It was well past 10 pm, already inching toward 11.
Pursing his lips, Alex decided not to overdo it, after all, all work and no rest would only lead to negative repercussions.
So he diligently packed up the parchments on his desk, setting them together before putting them away before repeating the same with the books on alchemy and then finally, he set aside the quill and bottle of ink, reminding himself to hand it over to the relevant staff tomorrow for a refill.
With that sorted, he rose to his feet, intent on making his way out of the office only to fall back down into his chair as a subtle but powerful pain in his head left him greatly disoriented.
Massaging his temples, he sought to get rid of the lightheadedness that came without warning while wondering what could have caused it.
This wouldn’t be the first time he was working overtime like this so why would his body react so strongly to it?... Or was there a different reason?
Instinctively, he activated his spirituality to ensure that the green mist permeating the school wasn’t affecting him negatively.
Contrary to expectations, however, there was no such effect which left Alex considering other options though in truth those ’options’ were non-existent.
After a while, the lightheadedness reduced enough for him to take a breather.
Unsure of what to make of it, he decided to keep a close eye on his body to avoid such a thing happening again before rising to his feet.
Though it was difficult, Alex made his way out of the office and after locking up, left for where the carriages were parked to facilitate movement from the lecture halls to other facilities in the Academy.
Alex quickly boarded one and after announcing his destination, swiftly fell into a semi-conscious state, only waking up after the coachman called out his name a couple of times.
"Are you okay, sir?" The man asked to which Alex replied.
"Of course, I’m just a little stressed out. Thank you for the ride and have a good night."
Seeing as there were no latent problems, the coachman shrugged before going on his way.
Massaging his temples, Alex headed into his designated apartment and on getting to his bedroom, collapsed on the bed without even bothering to get changed.
This time, the act was hardly intentional.

The next morning, Alex woke up feeling quite hungover despite having not touched any alcohol the entirety of yesterday.
"Ugh, what the hell is this?" Alex muttered through gritted teeth as he moved to the bathroom and helped himself to some tap water which helped a bit with the terrible feeling.
He stripped down completely and got into the bathtub, using the available salts and soaps to prepare a bath.
Soaking in the water as sweet smells assailed his senses, Alex finally gained some reprieve from the pain, his tense mind regaining some calm, allowing him to get some well-deserved sleep.
Unfortunately, it didn’t last very long as an aggressive knocking at the door snapped him out of it.
Clicking his tongue in annoyance, Alex got out of the bathroom after cleaning himself and then made his way to the door in a bathrobe, opening to find Roland’s maid standing outside.
"You..."
"I understand you have your reservations about me but I would appreciate it if you stop with the passive aggression. Do this again and I won’t hesitate to ignore you like you were lesser than the air I breathe." Alex said, channeling the frustrations from the lightheadedness that continued to assail his mind ever so slightly.
The maid, taken aback by the outburst, could not offer a sufficient response, only staring at Alex.
"So?... What is it?"
"... The Headmaster has called another meeting. Your attendance is required."
"I’ll be there," Alex remarked while trying to close the door only for the maid to add.
"I apologize for the rudeness, Professor. However, Professor Albus was a good man and what’s happening right now... he doesn’t deserve it."
Alex stayed silent, detecting sincerity in her words while deciding how best to respond.
Before he could do so, however, she turned and left, heading back to the carriage that was no doubt meant to be Alex’s ride to the meeting hall.
Letting out a sigh, Alex closed the door and headed to the bathroom to complete his wash up after which he bathed and then put on some clothes, opting for a much simpler attire as he tried to attribute the lightheadedness to the unfortunate heat prevalent in the month of Boreas.
Donning a white shirt with suspenders and khaki trousers with shoes to match, Alex stepped out with a black cane and gloves, his hair styled most fashionably.
Entering the carriage, the maid, who finally introduced herself as Cecilia, urged the horses to move with the animals obliging.
The ride was short or at least it felt that way to Alex as he stepped down from the carriage, having gotten to his destination which, just like last time, was filled with all academic staff in Farfouth.
Ignoring the stares, though there were hardly any, he made his way into the building and picking out a good spot, made himself comfortable.
It wouldn’t be long before the meeting, headed by the Headmaster, would begin.
