Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 356: Testing
Chapter 356: Testing
An illusory pair of hands emerged from the void and grabbed the monstrous dog seeking to unleash further destruction on Farfouth.
Holding it in place, it slowly squeezed it causing the dog’s snarls to turn into whimpers before finally, it dissipated like a lie and this time, it was permanent.
Most in the school who were without spirituality were unable to make out the arms, only watching as the monstrous dog entered the school premises, paused, and then disappeared.
Following the dog, the lion, horse, and many-headed serpent charged in to contend with the illusory arms but even that was hardly enough as even more arms emerged and held them down before repeating what had been done to the dog, with a similar outcome as well.
Once done, the arm reached for the broken portion of the barrier before melding with it, forming a temporary patch for the hole to avoid anyone taking advantage of the damage.
With the problem so easily dealt with, most were still processing the events that occurred before finally, a single joyful cry broke the persisting silence, leading to the entire school erupting in relief.
It would seem Farfouth would live to see another day.

"It must be quite powerful." Lord Shadow remarked as they stood on a building with Albus standing beside them, both shrouded in a black shroud with white dots.
"It is," Albus replied, his gaze trained on the academy walls. "In my time with Farfouth, the tale of the spirit guardian of the Academy garnered my interest and after a brief study, I figured out that the Undead Wheel Mystic behind the tale must be a rather powerful and old one."
"How old?"
"Honestly?... I can’t be sure. Most Mortal Wheel Mystics have an age expectancy of 400 to 500 years so I’d assume close to that number."
"I see." Lord Shadow remarked, not too bothered that the attack had been snuffed out just like that.
"But I’m quite curious; why did you stage the attack?"
"Testing." Lord Shadow replied before inquiring. "Now then, you say the seeds should be effective in 2 days, yes?"
"Most likely. Unless the Undead Wheel Mystic protecting the academy notices it before it completes its gestation."
"Alright then, let’s wait and see."
Taking one last look at the honeycomb barrier covering the school, Lord Shadow disappeared in a flash of black and white with Albus.

It was his first time seeing an Undead Wheel Mystic in action and frankly speaking, the display was quite unnerving.
Compared to the Beast Wheel whose Powers were more physical, the Undead Wheel spotted a more disturbing sort of Power that made them difficult to handle.
According to what Victoria had told him, facing an Undead Wheel Mystic in their home was akin to suicide as their home was the same as their body, which meant they had total control over everything in it.
Once again, Alex found himself at the center of the enemy’s home.
It felt like Aragon but much worse considering this one wasn’t as open as the Beastmen.
Letting out a sigh, he made his way through the school hallways having already dismissed class though there was hardly a need for that considering most students had already left, excitement and fear evident amongst them as they chatted feverishly about the events of the day.
"I always thought it was a myth, you know?"
"What is it?"
"Haven’t you heard of it?... The myth of the Weeping Lady."
"No, what is it?"
"The story goes like this; there was once a professor who worked in Farfouth who was passionate about her job and loved the students. One night, students were attacked by some outsiders and she tried to save the students but unfortunately, she was killed. However, her desire to protect the students was so strong she ended up coming back as a ghost. It’s said that whenever something bad is about to happen at the school, she appears to take care of it."
"That sounds like a load of hogwash."
"I’m telling you, it’s real. She is the one that protected us."
Intrigued by the tale, Alex felt it made sense if this was how the Undead Wheel Mystic came to be as the prerequisite for one to become a denizen of the Wheel was to die and while dying, have a strong will to keep on living even after death, thereby resisting the guidance of death to the Afterlife.
Regardless, learning her origins wouldn’t help matters as Alex needed to know how powerful the Mystic was and more than that, just how much more security the Supreme Order placed in the academy.
With his priorities sorted, Alex returned to his office where he found a white envelope placed on the table.
Furrowing his brows, he activated his spirituality, checking to see if there were any unexpected visitors.
There were none but the green mist that filled the entirety of the school was in there as well so he guessed that the envelope might have been dropped off by it.
He cautiously approached it, putting the bag he carried on the table before picking it up.
The insignia of the Supreme Order, a Crown, was etched on the seal of the envelope which Alex quickly broke before taking out the letter to peruse its contents.
It was short and precise, making mention of a meeting of the Order that would be taking place in a day’s time.
Restraining the smile threatening to break out, Alex set the letter down and moved to his seat, taking his place on it before pulling out a few parchments alongside a few books on alchemy, the same ones Headmaster Roland had been so kind to give to him.
The parchments signified the amount of progress he’d made in his thesis which in all honesty, was barely anything of note.
However, considering his medical knowledge was only surface level and the medicine of Eventide was quite backward, and he had to find a way to merge both, it was nothing to scoff at.
In any case, once done with the inspection, Alex put them down and taking out a quill as well as a bottle of ink, he began to put something down, taking the time to scan the contents of the books for relevant information.
It would be a while before he would put the quill down again.
