Hunter of the Evernight
Chapter 349: Jailbreak

Chapter 349: Jailbreak

The short drive back to his manor late at night was punctuated with the roaring of the steam engine and the occasional cricket sounds as Duke Fitzgerald busied himself reminiscing about the events over the past few weeks.

Keeping in touch with his contacts, he’d made sure to get them interested enough in the venture with Victoria without informing them of what it entailed.

He knew that exposing it too early could lead to... unfortunate happenings and it was best to avoid such.

Soon, the car parked at the driveway with the door opening a moment later to reveal Fenwick standing in wait.

"Ah, Fenwick." The Duke remarked as he stepped down from the car.

"How was the meeting, master?"

"It shows promise. Though they are still curious to find out what the merchandise is, I have made sure that they would be willing to pay good coin for it." Fitzgerald replied as he was escorted by Fenwick into the main building.

"I’m glad to hear that. Would you like to have anything?"

"No, not yet," Fitzgerald remarked on stepping through the doors with Fenwick closing them before moving to relieve the Duke of his coat.

"Then..."

"I’m more interested in knowing how our nocturnal guest is faring. I hope you kept a good eye on her."

"Of course, master. The vampire has been in her designated quarters with the occasional visit to the garden to bask in the rays of the Nighteye."

Nodding in satisfaction, Fitzgerald calmly intoned. "I will see her first and inform her of the proceedings. Perhaps we will be able to get our first batch for sale."

"Understood. This way, master."

Fenwick led the way through the expansive edifice, before arriving at one of the many guest rooms built in the manor.

Positively inclined at first, Fenwick couldn’t help but frown on noticing that the men he kept at the doors were nowhere to be found.

But that wasn’t all as his sharp ears caught the faint echoes of what sounded like... moaning?

Alarmed, Fenwick rushed and pushed the door open only to pause in his tracks with Duke Fitzgerald following closely behind.

On the bed, Victoria was draped in a ridiculously thin robe that left nothing to the imagination and about her, the same guards that were supposed to be watching over her.

One fed her grapes, the other massaged her feet and the last seemed to be pleasuring himself to her amusement.

Fenwick’s brow twitched as it took everything within him from immediately throwing out the fools who were currently staring back in shock.

Victoria, clearly amused, spoke up, her voice taking on an unusually seductive tone. "Oh hello boys, care to join us?"

Alex awoke to the tolling of bells in the distance.

Feeling lightheaded, he took a moment to reorient himself before proceeding to inspect his room, his eyes glowing a faint gold as he focused more on the spiritual side of what was left in the room.

Seeing as nothing was out of place, he deactivated it before letting out a relieved sigh.

It was a gamble.

He’d felt it, the unnatural chill caressing his skin, attempting to dig deeper into his being.

Considering what had taken place tonight, he could guess that whatever skepticism the Mouthpiece held toward him would lessen considerably.

Taking a deep breath, he took off his clothes and freshened up before returning to bed, pausing for a moment to ponder the implications of the bells tolling in the distance.

Though curious, he decided not to think much of it, after all, how bad could it be?

"Professor Albus escaped his cell last night."

The news left the entire campus in an uproar as both students and professors alike were engaged in discussions on the topic.

Most decried how such an illustrious man had fallen so low while others cursed the system that validated connections over true merit though considering the status of the academy, that was mostly the norm.

Through it all, not a single person made an effort to not judge Alex as he made his way to class.

Their eyes bored holes in his back, not that Alex cared though he could do without the unnecessary attention.

Perhaps this was another of the Mouthpiece’s schemes to get him to break.

There’s no way she didn’t know that putting him as a HoD would cause such reactions.

Letting out a sigh, Alex couldn’t help but consider that though annoying, the situation with Albus breaking out of prison was indeed curious.

In any case, he chose to go with the flow after all, as far as he knew, the flow was in his favor.

"Why did you do that?" Albus inquired while seated in a bar with a hood over his head.

Seated beside him was a similarly veiled figure.

The bar, located on the outskirts of Cance, rowdy as it was, provided a perfect, albeit temporary cover for a fugitive like him who was currently on the run from the Royal Blue after an unlikely escape from his prison cell last night.

"I saved your life."

"I didn’t need your help. Now I’m a wanted criminal and it’s all because of you."

"You are welcome."

"... What do you want?" Albus asked impatiently.

The figure took a sip of the drink in their mug before replying. "You want to save your wife, yes?"

"... How do you know about my wife?"

"I’ll help you, but you have to help me with something."

"... Tell me how you know about my wife?"

"You are wasting time, professor. Now tell me; are you willing to trade?... Your wife’s health for a favor?"

"... You will ruin me."

"You are already ruined." The figure remarked forcefully before adding. "So stop wasting time and talk."

Gritting his teeth, Albus nodded. "Fine, I accept."

Bang

The doors to the bar suddenly flung open as a group of Royal Blues stepped in.

Albus stared back in fright while the figure glanced before calmly intoning. "Happy to do business with you."

"You two, take off your hoods." The one leading the Royal Blue team remarked while pointing at Albus and his companion.

Albus hesitated while the other stepped away from the bar and stood still, regarding the Royal Blues like one would when faced with children.

"This is not your fight, return..."

Instead of offering a response, the officers aimed their muskets at the hooded figure while their leader took out a revolver.

"... Quite unfortunate."

The entire bar was covered in black and white a moment later.
