Chapter 312: Final struggle

Chapter 312: Final struggle

A black and white blade protruded from Hala’s chest, leaving the corrupted priestess stunned for a moment, her attacks against Alex and co dissipating as a result.

Taking the time to register the strange feeling, she slowly turned her neck just enough to make out a shadowy figure behind her.

"You..."

I don’t die easily, that was your first mistake. Your second was harming master, an act I will not forgive you for.

Charlotte remarked, her gaze filled with bloodlust as she pushed her sword further into Hala, eliciting a muffled groan from her lips.

Below, Alex stared at the scene, a strained smile struggling to remain on his lips as he experienced the joy of finally hurting Hala.

Unfortunately, it didn’t seem to be enough as Hala grabbed the blade, her stunned expression quickly giving away to a mocking smile.

"Is that it?... Was that your big finish?... A single knife to the chest?"

...

"I’ve survived a rain of arrows, all piercing my skin and leaving me without a means of escape. I’ve survived getting skewered by the Elf King, a being touted to be the greatest spearman in our time yet... you thought this would be enough?... Your arrogance disgusts me."

Before Charlotte could speak, Hala unleashed her Authority, sending Charlotte flying with her blade dripping with Hala’s corrupted blood.

Ignoring the knight, Hala once again unleashed her seven sins cards, the attacks charging towards Alex’s group only to suddenly dissipate in mid-air.

Hala’s expression shifted at that moment, her senses unwittingly picking up a strange thought.

Just as she began to ponder what had happened, Charlotte’s voice was heard yet again.

And it would seem your third mistake was thinking that all I wished to do was stab you.

Hala frowned before slowly turning to regard Charlotte, finding that she had pierced herself with her blade and perhaps due to that, her shadowy form had gotten more compact, taking on a figure akin to her own.

"... What did you do?" Hala inquired as a foreign emotion slowly crept up her spine.

Charlotte said nothing as she stretched out her right hand.

Almost instantaneously, seven malevolent attacks formed about her, each one taking on the characteristics of the seven sins.

The shock was unmistakable as Hala froze, her eyes widened as she watched Charlotte perfectly replicate her Abilities.

Though regretful that your Miracles are out of reach, I believe this should suffice.

And with those words, Charlotte unleashed her attack.

Hala tried to utilize the seven sins cards to counter only to discover that she couldn’t do so.

In fact, at that moment, it seemed as though her control over the domain of Distorted Corruption had been wrested from her, no doubt a situation that had something to do with Charlotte’s condition.

Alas, her realization came a tad too late as the seven sins attack by Charlotte consumed her, eliciting yet another scream from the ancient priestess.

Meanwhile, Alex and the others were slowly recovering from the damage they suffered with Alejandro already struggling to get to his feet.

"...We can’t miss this opportunity." He muttered to himself, terrified of a situation where they would be forced to accept a loss, a situation which would spell certain doom for Aragon.

He staggered before ultimately dropping back to his knees, his breathing heavy.

About to repeat the same action, Alex called him to order. "Stop. Don’t worry, Charlotte won’t lose."

"How can you be so sure?"

Struggling to maintain a smirk, Alex replied. "Because she has everything she needs."

Boom

***

The island trembled from the impact of the explosion with a massive mushroom dust cloud enshrouding the blast site for a moment before it dissipated, revealing a desperate Hala and a resolute Charlotte, the latter of which suddenly disappeared in a flash of black and white to appear above Hala before swinging her blade down.

The ancient priestess found herself unable to adjust in time and as a result, paid dearly as her left arm was separated from the rest of her body..

"Ah!!!" Hala’s eyes shook as she fell back toward the ground, crashing awkwardly before struggling to her feet, the foreign sensation she felt still gnawing at her.

It was only when Charlotte landed beside her and then thrusted her sword through her torso did Hala finally discern what she felt.

It was fear... an unbridled fear born out of the thought that she might die and that was all she needed to recall that time.

All the while she’d moved and acted all because she didn’t want to die without fulfilling her dreams.

How pathetic would it be to allow that to happen?... Once before she’d thrown away everything and journeyed through the Abyss out of fear of losing her life.

Only she knew how trying those years were, always struggling in a bid to keep her sanity but as with anyone that stayed in the Abyss long enough, she slowly grew warped before turning into what she was now.

A fossil unwilling to let go of past aspirations, even daring to go as far as twisting the very order of the world to fulfill it.

But did that mean she would stop?... Of course not!

"Ah!" Hala screamed out before the island began to plunge downward only stopping after it had crashed into something.

The group, destabilized by the sudden motion, recovered just in time to watch as the island began to fall apart.

Seeing this, Alejandro was the first to act, slamming his palms on the ground in a bid to preserve the integrity of the island.

As if that wasn’t enough, several tentacles outfitted with suckers and strange orifices at the tips which when opened, revealed rows of razor-sharp teeth, emerged from the sides, seemingly in search of something before they hurtled toward the group.

Ana acted next, utilizing her temporal lock to restrain the tentacles.

Indeed, restraint was all she could do as a permanent stop was impossible, perhaps owing to the origin of the tentacles which was undoubtedly the Greatest Evil.

Looking at the chaos erupting about her, Hala grinned at the thought that she wouldn’t die... no, she would live to finish what had already begun!
