Hunter of the Evernight
Chapter 206: Alive

Chapter 206: Alive

It was a pale land with an atmosphere that brought nothing but despair to the soul.

He stood before a being, covered in a black raggedy cloak and wielding a scythe.

Underneath its hood, a pair of soulless eyes could be seen.

He heard a voice, one distant and yet still so near.

"Your time has come."

He tried to move but found himself unable to, and so he could do nothing but watch as the hooded figure raised its scythe.

He closed his eyes and looked away, hoping for his death to come quickly but the next moment, he heard another voice, one that was quite familiar.

By the time he opened his eyes, he realized that the hooded figure was gone and he was alone in a pale landscape with nothing as far as the eyes could see.

Blinking repeatedly, he tried to make sense of what was happening when the familiar voice came again.

"I will wait for you."

Gasp

Alex opened his eyes to find himself looking at an unfamiliar roof.

Blinking a few times, he glanced left and right to discover that he was in a bedroom barely large enough to contain 10 people with a chair beside his bed.

Placing his palm on his face, he tried to recall how he’d arrived here but pulled up repeated blanks.

"What the hell happened?" He furrowed his brows as he quickly went through his memories.

The last thing he remembered was facing off against Damian but after that... blank.

"Nadia!" He quickly sat up and looked around but saw nothing that could potentially belong to Nadia.

Just then, he felt a sharp pain in his chest causing him to grimace.

He pulled up the shirt he was wearing to discover a large scar where his heart was.

Furrowing his brows, he muttered. "How did this happen?"

Try as he may, he found himself unable to recall how he’d got the wound as well.

Just then, he noticed a window at one edge of the room

Letting go of his shirt, Alex got out of bed and walked to the window that was a bit high up and was barely wide enough for a child to crawl through.

Seeing as he couldn’t reach the window, he grabbed the chair placed at his bedside and placed it directly under the window.

Then, he climbed on it and finally had a clear view of the window.

He reached out and pushed the windowpane open, allowing him to take a look outside, however, what he saw was enough to leave him further perplexed.

It was a city possessing a dreary atmosphere with streets almost devoid of pedestrians with very few carriages moving about and even the drivers of the carriages present had their heads down with a hood over their face.

Up above, the Lightbringer was barely visible with dark clouds hanging over the city, leaving the city almost lightless if not for the presence of street lamps helping to dispel some of the darkness.

Seeing all this, Alex couldn’t help but wonder. "Where am I?"

Just then, he sensed someone approaching his room, prompting him to shift his attention toward the door.

A few seconds later the doorknob turned before the door was slowly opened.

Getting a glimpse of the person at the other end, Alex muttered. "You..."

Arthur led Natasha and Ambrose through the ruins, making sure to watch his steps as he walked, his sharp eyes keeping a close watch on his surroundings as he moved.

The acrid smell of rotten corpses and gunpowder filled the atmosphere to a rather uncomfortable degree but as professionals, the trio moved calmly, barely reacting to it.

"Are you alright?" Natasha asked.

Ambrose, cracked upon his eyes a little as he replied in a hoarse tone. "Don’t worry, I won’t die so easily."

"... Alright."

Soon the trio arrived at a wooden shack.

A quick look and one could tell the shack was hastily put together.

Arthur knocked on the door before a feminine voice was heard from inside.

"Come in."

Obliging, Arthur opened the door and entered the shack with Natasha and Ambrose.

Closing the door behind them, they found themselves in a fancily decorated room lit up by scented candles.

Shelves stacked with books lined the room and at the center, a round table with chairs about it.

Currently, only one person occupied this space and her attention was completely placed on the book she was reading, not bothering to look up at the trio.

"Lady Ana." Natasha greeted with a bow.

Ana let out a sigh before closing the book she was reading and carefully placing it sideways.

Then she glanced at the trio, her gaze quickly focusing on Ambrose. "I’m guessing he is in a critical state."

"...Yes," Natasha replied with her head down.

"What did you hope to achieve with this exactly?" Ana inquired as she intertwined her fingers before using them to support her chin.

Despite his state, Ambrose stopped Natasha from responding before going ahead to answer. "We don’t have much time. The longer we wait for reinforcements from the Church to arrive, the more time those creatures have to multiply. We can’t let them have their way."

"So you decided to risk your life for an investigation?"

"I got this," Ambrose remarked as he urged Natasha to toss the bag she held.

Ana grabbed it and after opening it, spied on its contents.

"... You saw this where?"

"The tunnel exits close to the abandoned Catacombs."

"I see." Ana nodded as she rose to her feet.

"Even if reinforcements come, they have to comb the entire labyrinthine structure of the underground tunnels. In that time, whatever messed up thing the true mastermind of BoneHaven is concocting would be completed."

"How can you be so sure?"

"... Would you rather believe that they haven’t started yet?"

Pausing momentarily to inspect Ambrose’s expression, Ana revealed a meaningful smile as she remarked. "You have done well."

Then with a casual gesture, she added. "Come, let me help you recover what you have lost."

Natasha walked to the round table before placing Ambrose on it.

Ana approached and after a brief scrutiny, reached out to pull the bloodied shirt acting as a bandage for Ambrose’s severed leg.

Waving her palm across it, the sound of bone and flesh forming again echoed in the room followed by the screams of a middle-aged man.
