Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 205: Whispers
Chapter 205: Whispers
Huff...huff
The sound of hurried footsteps accompanied by heavy breathing echoed in the silent forest.
A middle-aged man with a hat bearing a torch on his head, dressed in a black tailcoat and trousers with ankle-high boots, moved anxiously, looking behind him intermittently while clutching a bag in one hand and a shotgun in the other.
Looking around for cover, he soon found his way to a relatively large tree, using its trunk to hide his figure before promptly turning off the torch on his hat.
Taking a few deep breaths, he tried to calm his nerves while listening for any movement.
Moments later, what sounded like whispering could be heard accompanying the cool breeze which caused the man to grow tense.
First glancing to the right and then to the left, he quickly crouched down.
Placing the bag he was carrying in a crevice in the tree trunk, he used both hands to grab his shotgun as he held his breath.
The whispering continued and with each one, it seemed to draw closer to the man’s position.
Then suddenly, it stopped and as quickly as it came, it disappeared.
But this brought no sense of solace to the man as he gripped his shotgun tightly.
Despite the chilly night, his palms were wet and his brows were peppered with sweat.
Taking a deep breath, he tried to step out to investigate if he was truly alone only to pause as he felt something behind him.
Immediately, he fell to the ground and quickly turned just in time to make out the outline of a statue.
The statue stood a few meters away, a solemn expression on its alabaster exterior.
Bearing the image of a human, it had a pair of wings on its back and its hands were joined together as though in prayer.
Despite its serene appearance, The middle-aged man had a face full of dread as he tried to back away only to pause as he felt something again.
He turned behind him just in time to see yet another statue and the next moment, he felt a sharp pain.
"Ah!!!" He let out a scream as he glanced back only to find that his leg had been ripped off.
Immediately, he leaped away from his position, taking a position that allowed him to view both angel statues at the same time.
As blood gushed from what was left of his leg, he quickly pulled off his shirt and used it as a bandage in an attempt to stop the bleeding while keeping his attention on the angel statues.
It was safe to say, this was no easy task.
"I don’t reckon you guys plan on letting me go, right?" The man asked in a jocular manner with a rather complicated expression on his face.
Of course, no response came from the statues, and instead, even more whispering could be heard coming from the distance.
"Even more?... How the hell do you guys plan to share one guy?" The man chuckled as he backed up against a tree having managed to stop the bleeding.
His breathing quickly turned ragged and his complexion pale but he didn’t dare to close his eyes, keeping his gaze on the statues.
Soon enough, he was forced to let out a tired sigh as even more statues showed up, quickly surrounding him.
"Damn... I guess this is it for me." As he spoke, he held his shotgun and aimed at a statue.
Bang
A shot rang out after which a portion of the angel exploded.
Hardly had the broken bits touched the ground however the destroyed part repaired itself like it wasn’t damaged in the first place.
"Even being able to heal from a Quillion bullet?... Unbelievable." He chuckled self-deprecatingly as the chill of the night bit at him.
As he took his last breaths, his eyes grew heavy, and with each blink, the statues came closer and closer, until...
"Ambrose!"
Flash
A terrifying sword beam shot past and ripped apart a portion of the tree as well as the statues surrounding Ambrose.
The explosion caused the man to shoot up before looking in a certain direction
There, a blonde-haired woman wearing a leather suit and wielding a switchblade rushed toward him with a worried expression.
"Natasha!... You don’t know how happy I am to see you." Ambrose remarked with tears in his eyes.
Ignoring his words, Natasha arrived at his position. "Are you crazy!... Who the hell told you to go down into the underground tunnels without assistance?"
"You can berate me later!... Those statues are about to recover!"
"Shit." Clicking her tongue in annoyance, Natasha helped Ambrose to his feet before putting him on her back after which she picked up the bag he’d stuffed in a tree, at his behest before bolting without looking back.
At the same time, aggressive whispering erupted about and followed her like an annoying mosquito.
"Damn it, these guys don’t give up!" Natasha cursed as she weaved her way through the forest trees.
"Well, you technically just took away their dinner," Ambrose commented.
"Would you rather I toss you to them?"
"...Please run."
Despite their little banter, Natasha didn’t dare to stop as she kept on running.
"I don’t think we can outrun them," Ambrose remarked after a few minutes passed and the whistling persisted.
Natasha replied. "There’s no need to worry. We are almost there."
"Where?"
"There!"
Awooo!
Whoosh
Ambrose turned wide-eyed as a sweltering red light appeared a few meters away.
Looking toward the source, he found a massive ball of lava floating a few meters in the air, and below it, a familiar face.
"Haha, Arthur you bastard, I thought you’d left," Ambrose said in a joyous tone.
Arthur snorted. "How can I leave?... You assholes haven’t paid me for the destruction of my properties."
As Natasha arrived beside Arthur, she immediately turned and gripped her switchblade, ready for a joint offensive.
However, Arthur’s next words brought her ease. "Don’t worry, they abhor light of any kind. They won’t dare to go any further than this."
True to his words, the whistling slowly died down before it disappeared completely, allowing both Natasha and Ambrose to let out relieved sighs.
"Come with me, there’s someone you might want to see."
Leaving those words behind, Arthur maintained the lava orb floating above while walking away with Natasha and Ambrose following closely behind.
Exiting the forest, they soon came upon the ruined remains of what was once a construction site.
