Hunter of the Evernight
Chapter 202: Ada

Chapter 202: Ada

Claudia’s knowledge of the Undead Wheel was lax compared to her father or even Roland.

From what she knew through a few encounters with information on the subject, for one to enter the Wheel, they had to fulfill two conditions; Die and have a strong lingering attachment to the mortal world.

With her understanding, she didn’t think it possible for an Undead Wheel Mystic to show emotions but that was exactly what was happening at this moment as she stared blankly at Ada’s corporeal form.

"Aunty, it’s you," Claudia muttered in awe.

Revealing a warm smile despite the cold being emitted from her body, Ada replied. "You seem surprised to see me. Don’t tell me you thought that I’d die so easily a second time?"

"Well... you weren’t moving."

"That’s because I found it hard to leave my body. Gregory did so much to preserve it but it ended up getting destroyed." With a melancholic tone, Ada glanced at the remains of her physical body.

"Anyway, I can’t keep on lamenting when my dear daughter is in danger. So I guess it’s best to abandon it."

"... Yeah." Claudia nodded before quickly recalling the unfortunate situation they were in.

At this point, the paused scenery resumed with the Spirit Beasts still lunging at Claudia.

"..." Unable to move out of fright, Claudia stared wide-eyed as the Beasts ripped her apart... or at least tried to.

Whoosh

The air rippled for a brief moment before stakes erupted from the ground, impaling the creatures almost immediately.

It happened so quickly, that none understood what was happening until the Spirit Beasts returned to their world amidst pained whimpers.

"...Eh." Claudia blinked a few times in sheer amazement.

’What just happened?’ Curious to know more, she turned to Ada only to discover the latter with a stern expression on her face.

"Uhmm..."

"Take them and go," Ada remarked as she moved to shield Claudia from the deathly stares thrown her way by the blood-lusting Vampires.

Claudia quickly replied. "What about you?"

"Don’t worry. They won’t be able to kill me so easily," Ada remarked.

She casually left out the fact that she couldn’t exactly leave any longer but chose not to burden Claudia with that information.

Regardless, Ada didn’t regret leaving the confines of her body.

At least, it allowed her to protect Arwen one last time just like her husband would have wanted.

She still regretted the events of that fateful day but regardless, even if she went back, she’d end up making the same choices.

Letting out a sigh, Ada spoke up. "Claudia. Stop wasting time and go."

"But..."

"This is an order!"

"..." Gritting her teeth, Claudia turned her back to Ada and exerting her will on the world, lifted Roland, Nadia, and Arwen using telekinesis.

"... I’ll come back." Unsure of what to say, Claudia left those words behind before running away in the opposite direction.

A few Vampires tried to give chase but before they could take a few steps, the building rumbled like a slumbering giant that had awoken.

The next moment, the destroyed walls and ceiling repaired itself, returning to a state before it was damaged.

Maybe it was fate but most of the Vampires that had come for Claudia and the others were currently within the house, their attention on the green ghost currently floating a few meters ahead of them.

Due to the fear still burning in their hearts, the bloodthirsty vampires were unable to tell the danger they were in, instead, baring their fangs toward Ada as they prepared to attack.

Wearing a rather regretful expression, Ada said. "Perhaps it’s because of my current state that I can sense the fear in your hearts. That you are being forced against your will is unfortunate but the blood on your hands is unmistakable. For this reason, I cannot allow any of you to pass."

Before the vampires could make a move, yet another rumbling occurred before the building seemed to come alive.

The ground they stood on, opened up and swallowed a few, while the others tried to escape.

Of course, those didn’t get very far before the walls began to close in on them, cutting off their escape routes.

With their only way out being up, they tried to change directions but before they could scale the walls, stakes shot out from the walls, impaling as many as dared to climb the walls.

Immediately, the battlefield turned to chaos as the vampires found themselves fighting off against an angry house.

***

It was a gory scene, even for Alex and Elizabeth who were no newbies when it came to gore and bloodshed.

Before them, the torn corpses of Vampires lay on the ground, expressions of fear unmistakable on their faces.

"Monster." Was the only word Elizabeth could muster as she stared at the sight.

Alex’s expression turned grim as he realized a certain fact. "The ritual can be carried out in any order."

Clap

As the sound of clapping reached the ears of the duo, the area up ahead was lit up by tongues of flames dancing atop torches hung on the wall.

There, Damian stood with the 11 remaining Dukes strapped to altars around him.

Damian’s current state was no different from Charlotte’s as his bloodlust overflowed like a tumultuous river.

His eyes were completely red with a black reptilian slit at the center and his clothes were soaked in the blood of his kin.

His usually pale skin looked quite rosy, almost bordering on red and his Crimson Heart glowed brightly.

"How are you so smart?" Damian questioned in a mocking tone as he clapped.

"Help us!"

"Save us from this monster!"

"He plans to sacrifice us!"

"You have to stop him!"

The Dukes cried out one after the other, hoping and pleading for Alex to save them.

To them, Alex was a beacon of hope in the seemingly hopeless situation.

However, Alex wasn’t quick to move as he could sense it.

Something was wrong.

Damian... was too calm and most importantly, his current power level did not lose out to Charlotte.

He pondered using White Hole again but feared that continuous usage of such an Ability could cause cracks in the integrity of space.

Of course, that was a secondary reason with his primary being that he didn’t think Crow Mask would allow him to destroy everything he’d planned for so easily.

"Where is he?" Alex calmly asked after deciding his next course of action.

Damian raised a brow. "Who?"

"Crow Mask."

"Oh, that guy," Damian replied while rolling his eyes before shrugging nonchalantly. "Who knows?"

"Aren’t you worried?"

"Hmm?"

"He is using you for his nefarious purpose yet you still follow along. You may be hungry for power Damian but I don’t see you as someone that would be so foolish."

Damian chuckled. "You are right. I’m not foolish."

"So..."

"But I’m also not dumb enough to go against that monster just yet."

"..."

"He knows that I’d backstab him if given the opportunity yet he remains so carefree. That surely means that I am of no threat to him."

"Then..."

"But that might not remain true if I become the Blood God and absorb your essence as the Dark Lord. At that time, it remains to be seen if he would dominate me so easily."

"So you won’t work together with me?"

"Why should I?... Why share the glory with you?... I’d rather do it alone!"

Boom

With the eruption of crimson energy, the vampire corpses were reanimated.

The cracking of bones and shuffling of feet echoed in the hall until Alex and Elizabeth were surrounded by zombified Vampires.

"... And here I thought you’d be sensible enough to know that our fighting is to his benefit," Alex muttered in a regretful tone.

Damian scoffed in return. "Just die."
