Hunter of the Evernight
Chapter 199: Uncanny

Chapter 199: Uncanny

In the spacious office of the Vice Chancellor, a place once occupied by Nikolas, a middle-aged man, donning a black suit sat at the desk with his gaze fixated outside.

With a calm demeanor, he studied the bronze statue standing tall at the center of Krobridge.

Unperturbed by the chaos currently taking place, he let out a deep sigh.

"Truly beautiful." He muttered.

Taking a deep breath, he reluctantly tore his gaze away from the sight, taking the time to view the interior of the office he was in.

A few shelves stacked with books were present in the room but none of these were of importance to the white-haired fellow.

His attention was soon drawn to what seemed to be a kitchenette.

Intrigued by the structure, he rose to his feet and picked up his cane, slowly making his way over.

Standing before a coffee maker, he went ahead to brew himself a cup, navigating his way around the machine as though he’d rehearsed it many times over.

Soon enough, his work was done and in a petite teacup, the dark liquid was poured without added supplements.

Taking a sip, he allowed it to linger in his mouth for a bit before going ahead to swallow.

"Bitter." He muttered softly before attempting to take another sip.

However, he paused just as the cup touched his lips and a familiar feeling came upon him.

His brows creased as he once again turned his attention to the scenery outside the office.

He sauntered over and placed his cup of coffee on the desk behind him, then gently placed his palm on the floor-to-ceiling window.

A moment later the glass exploded, allowing the wind filled with fear and bloodlust to move unrestrained into the office.

Ignoring it, he instead focused his attention on the familiar feeling.

Closing his eyes for a moment, he soon muttered coldly. "Sister..."

His creased brows turned into a frown as he opened his eyes.

Stroking his well-trimmed beard, he fell into deep thought for a while, pondering and considering certain matters.

Just then, the building he was in trembled with great fervor, snapping him out of his thoughts.

"Hmm." Closing his eyes, he spread his senses throughout the entirety of Krobridge, trying to figure out the source of the discrepancy he felt.

But it didn’t take long before he found himself stumped by what he saw.

In his enhanced vision, it took him only a few seconds to realize that the citizens of Krobridge were being spirited away by an unknown fog.

".... Sisters." His expression crumpled completely as he realized the situation was worse than he’d imagined.

"Impressive play, Mr. Hunter." The man chuckled before retrieving a card from his pocket. "But you will not be winning this round."

He nonchalantly tossed the card out the window but surprisingly it didn’t fall to the ground, instead floated a great distance, heading toward a certain location.

Seeing as how both Nadia and Arwen were partially unconscious, Claudia couldn’t exactly ask if the ritual had succeeded.

But judging from the flow of the aether, something was happening.

Letting out a sigh, she left the hall, closing the door behind her.

Walking through a short hallway, she soon arrived at the entrance to the precinct.

There, Roland stood guard with a complicated expression on his face.

Making her way over, Claudia inquired. "What about the others?"

"They disappeared," Roland replied without mincing words.

"... I guess the ritual works fine."

Roland clicked his tongue. "Only for the humans though."

"..." Claudia remained silent as she understood what Roland meant.

Due to the situation, Alex prioritized saving humans before taking the vampires.

It was out of worry of the fact that if the ritual was found out way too early, it would have to stop out of fear of incurring the wrath of the Will of the World, after all, what they were doing was against the laws of the world.

Of course, Roland and Claudia protested against this but unfortunately, without Alex backing them, they were quickly silenced.

"We don’t have a choice," Claudia remarked after a few seconds of silence.

Roland clenched his jaw. "Do you know how many of our people will die today?... No matter if we lose or win, what is constant is the losses our kin will face today."

"If we don’t do this, Damian will complete the ritual and then..."

"There’s no need to explain it to me, Claudia," Roland said, cutting her off. "I know that there’s no other way... but still..."

Gritting his teeth, Roland did not attempt to complete his sentence, instead shifting his attention to the scene outside.

Using the vision of what seemed to be an owl but with two faces flew in the sky, surveying the area around the precinct.

So far, it seemed as though the situation was in their favor.

Seeing as he remained quiet, Claudia didn’t bother to disturb him, instead taking the opportunity to excuse herself.

"Something is coming," Roland remarked as he opened his eyes and immediately distanced himself from the entrance.

Claudia raised a brow as she asked. "What..."

Boom

She didn’t even get a chance to finish her sentence when a powerful shockwave sent her and Roland flying back a few meters.

"Ugh..."Groaning softly, Claudia tried to stand up only to discover that a piece of wood as large as a butcher’s knife which was discolored an ominous purple for some reason, had pierced her torso.

At the same time, pain shot through her body, paralyzing her for a moment.

"Damn it, what’s this?" Claudia tried to move to pull out the foreign object but found herself unable to do so.

Just then, Roland reached out and grabbed it before quickly pulling it out and tossing it away.

Once that was done, Claudia found herself able to move again.

Before she could thank him, the sound of heavy footsteps coming through the entrance echoed, drawing the attention of both Vampires.

There, a monstrosity that looked like a mishmash of various poisonous creatures, ranging from snakes to scorpions stood upright.

Forgetting to breathe for a moment, Claudia asked with a stutter. "... What the hell is that?"

Roland’s expression turned grave as he replied. "An Uncanny."

"A what?" Claudia glanced at her.

Before Roland could explain further, the monstrosity made its move, swinging a scorpion tail toward the duo in a bid to skewer at least one of them.

Leaping away in fright, both Roland and Claudia quickly recovered before moving closer together to ensure maximum teamwork.

"Mind explaining what an Uncanny is now?"

"No time," Roland replied before clasping his palms together.

Unfortunately whatever he wanted to do was prevented as the Uncanny attacked again, swinging its tail like a whip.

Everything it touched, instead of breaking was subjected to corrosion, quickly turning an ominous purple.

At the same time, the air in the precinct turned heavy as the creature emitted powerful fumes from its body.

"Damn it, where is that crazy ghoul when she’s needed?" Roland cursed in annoyance.

Just then... Boom

The roof caved in as a familiar figure came down and crashed into the head of the Uncanny, crushing it without hesitation.

Silently staring at the purple liquid that stained her clothes and even melted her skin, Ada remained unresponsive.

Seeing as how the Uncanny remained still, she stepped away and slowly made her way toward Roland.

"Oi, why are you... Look out!"

Puchi

Ada paused in her tracks as she slowly looked down to find a scorpion tail protruding from her chest.
