Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 182: Traitor
Chapter 182: Traitor
In the dark hall guarded by the Red Knights, Charlotte was seated on a stone chair directly facing the entrance, a wine cup in her hand with her remaining subordinates standing on either side behind her.
Silence reigned with only the sound of Charlotte sipping from her glass echoing once in a while.
It remained this way for quite some time before she finally let out a tired sigh. "Are there no traitors?"
She sounded disappointed as she downed the remainder of the wine in her glass before tossing it aside like a piece of trash.
The sound of glass shattering echoed across the hall as she rose to her feet, preparing to leave.
However, she paused as she sensed something.
She glanced at the entrance just in time to watch it open and a familiar figure rushed in.
"You are here," Charlotte remarked.
Jarius trembled upon meeting her gaze, quickly dropping his head in servitude and falling to his knees.
"My lady."
"What is it?"
"There is a traitor."
"Oh?" Charlotte acted surprised but the smile forming at the corner of her lips told a different story.
Jarius nodded. "He plans to seek the Dark Lord’s help in overthrowing the great Monarch, Damian."
"Hoh, that’s interesting." Charlotte casually made her way over and stood before him.
Looking down at Jarius, she continued. "You have done well. Do not fret, you and your dukedom will not be touched once the cleansing begins."
Jarius trembled upon hearing Charlotte’s words.
A moment passed before he replied. "Thank you, my lady."
Charlotte no longer paid him any heed as she made her way out of the hall, accompanied by her Silver Knights and the Red Knights guarding the hall.
For the first time in more than a thousand years, no Red Knight stood guard over the octagonal hall.

The sounds of beeping echoed in the room where the dark pod was kept.
Steady breathing came from within the pod until the beeping stopped and in its place, a puff was heard coming from the steel pipes placed on it.
A moment later, the pod opened and Elizabeth stepped out with a strange viscous liquid sticking to her skin.
Completely naked at first, she moved over to a table at the edge of the room and picked up a towel, using it to wipe herself clean.
Once done, she tossed the towel aside before picking up a pair of clothing placed on the table.
Quickly wearing the black leather suit that clung to her body, revealing her slender figure, Elizabeth took a deep breath before picking up the last thing placed on the table; her switchblades.
Placing them in her leg pockets, she walked toward another part of the room, and after pushing one of the stone slabs, the sound of gears turning echoed before the wall receded revealing a stone passage lit up by gas lamps.
Elizabeth stepped into the passageway and made her way to the end of it where a metal door stood.
She grabbed the key placed in the key holder and turned it, unlocking the door and revealing her office.
Just as she moved into the office and closed the door behind her, the sound of hurried footsteps was heard before the official door of her office swung open and a familiar face rushed in.
Elizabeth frowned at the sudden disturbance. "Is there a problem, Billy?"
"Yes and no..." Billy replied while trying to catch his breath.
Elizabeth raised a brow. "I’m listening."
"Remember when you said we should make sure to always inform you immediately whenever a telegram from Arwen comes in?"
"Did she send one?"
"Yes," Billy replied before moving closer to hand over the piece of paper he was with.
Elizabeth took it and after a quick scan, frowned yet again.
"Prepare a carriage."
"Ma’am?"
"No, never mind. I’ll go myself."
"Uhmm."
"Inform everyone to prepare for any eventualities, understood?"
"Yes ma’am."
"I’ll be leaving now."
Without waiting for a response, Elizabeth left the office and made her way toward the elevator to head up.

Nikolas stood outside, his gaze trained on the golden sky.
It truly was a beautiful sight.
"Dad..." Claudia called out from behind him.
Nikolas didn’t bother to turn back as he replied. "Don’t worry, I just came to talk."
Knowing there was no point trying to figure out what he wanted to talk about, she decided to wait patiently.
Just then, the door swung open and Ada stood on the other end.
"Hmm?" Nikolas glanced at her.
Bowing slightly, Ada remarked. "Please come in."
Nodding in satisfaction, he made his way into the spacious living room but he didn’t have the opportunity to appreciate the beauty it held as his gaze zeroed in on the imposing figure already seated on the couch with his legs crossed and two teacups placed on the center table.
The intense attraction he felt toward the figure allowed him to understand who that was without having to ponder too much.
With an amiable smile on his visage, he strode over with a steady gait, the sound of his cane clashing with the floor echoing across the room.
Once he got close enough, he bowed slightly. "Greetings to the Dark Lord. Thank you for accepting my request for a conversation."
"There was no reason to refuse." Alex casually said as he gestured for him to take his seat.
Nikolas readily obliged as he made himself comfortable before glancing at the lady standing behind Alex’s couch.
Her brown skin and peculiar dress sense were enough for Nikolas to guess her nationality and the scent she gave off helped him understand her identity further.
Noticing his gaze, Nadia looked over but didn’t let it linger before turning away.
Meanwhile, Claudia stood behind the couch her father was seated on, her heart palpitating at the thought of the conversation about to happen.
"Care for some tea?" Alex offered as he picked up the teacup placed before him.
Nikolas nodded. "Thank you."
Picking up his cup, he took a sip, taking a moment to savor the sweet blend of flavors.
For a moment, no one spoke as the men enjoyed their tea.
More than 3 minutes passed before Alex broke the ice. "Why are you here?"
"..." Nikolas paused his drinking before slowly dropping the cup in his hands.
Meeting Alex’s gaze which seemed to be welcoming him, he spoke up. "Please save us."
"Us?" Alex raised a brow.
"The Vampirekin present in Krobridge are facing an unprecedented crisis at the hands of Damian. If you do nothing, we will soon be destroyed."
"I see," Alex muttered, seemingly nonchalant as he dropped his cup.
Taking a moment to ponder, he remarked. "Why do you think I can save you?"
"... Isn’t it easy to tell?" Nikolas asked back.
Alex met his gaze before letting out a sigh. "I already told your daughter. I am not the Dark Lord."
"Regardless of what you say, you are. I sense the night from you, one more potent than the night sky. You may reject the title but the title doesn’t reject you."
"..." Alex turned silent at Nikolas’s words.
"Please... as long as you deny Damian’s Authority, surely the other Dukes will rally under your banner."
"Damian wishes to lead Vampires to a new era."
"I thought so too but not anymore." Nikolas quickly replied. "I have seen it in his eyes. That madman only seeks to dominate all things, no matter what it costs. If he has his way, this city will be destroyed, both humans and vampires alike."
"It is a chance to regain your lost glory."
"I wasn’t born in the Dark Ages. I do not wish to allow what I and my kindred have built up for so long to crumble while I sit back and watch."
Alex was unable to say anymore as he stared intently at Nikolas.
"You could die."
"As long as Damian doesn’t have his way... that is enough."
"..."
Silence reigned as their conversation entered a lull.
It took almost a minute before Alex remarked. "Then so be it. Inform the other Dukes... I will carry out the duties of the so-called Dark Lord this one time."
