Chapter 181: Escaping death

Alex opened his eyes to find himself staring at the ceiling.

Blinking a few times, he tried to make heads or tails of what was happening.

"You are awake."

He glanced in the direction of the voice to find Nadia and Arwen seated at the bedside, their gazes trained on him.

"Uhmm..."

"You fell unconscious in the memory. I had to borrow Nadia’s help in pulling your consciousness back from there before you were assimilated by the Mist." Arwen explained.

"... I see," Alex muttered as he massaged his temples.

Taking the time to sit up, he scrutinized the expressions of the two ladies before inquiring. "How long has it been?"

"Roughly 2 hours," Nadia replied.

Nodding thoughtfully, he muttered. "God."

"Hmm?" Both Nadia and Arwen looked at him with questioning gazes.

Alex continued, completely ignoring the attention the looks they were giving him.

"So does that mean Crow Mask wants to become a God?"

"Uhmm..." Arwen glanced at Nadia, hoping she would understand what he was on about but of course, Nadia was similarly perplexed.

Letting out a sigh, she muttered. "Let him finish. Hopefully, he’d be nice enough to explain the situation to us."

Pursing her lips, Arwen readily agreed with Nadia’s suggestion.

Meanwhile, Alex was still in deep thought as he pondered the conversation with Lord Albion.

’Was there a reason he was being so cryptic?’ Alex couldn’t help but ask.

An answer quickly came as he muttered. "The influence of Crow Mask had already covered the entire city."

Which meant, there was no way to prevent him from learning about the meeting.

The only thing Lord Albion could do was speak cryptically to ensure the Crow Mask didn’t turn his attention in their direction.

Alex glanced at Nadia and Arwen before scrutinizing the room he was in.

If his conjecture was correct, that meant Crow Mask was privy to everything happening in Krobridge.

Alex’s eyes shook at the possibility.

Wasn’t this power already akin to a god?... Yet Crow Mask was seeking more?

What more could there be?

If he followed what Lord Albion said, then the first riddle he gave was the main takeaway from their conversation.

’No.’ Alex shook his head.

’I can’t narrow my thinking like that. For all I know, that could be a misdirection.’

Alex pursed his lips.

With his death looming, he had to figure so much out and then formulate a plan to survive.

There was no other option, or else he’d die in a foreign land, losing the opportunity to return to his family.

His heart palpitated at the thought.

It took him a while before he opened his eyes with determination flashing within them.

"It’s a race against time." He suddenly remarked, catching Nadia and Arwen off guard.

"Uhmm, Alex..." Nadia called out to him.

Alex glanced at her before shifting his attention to Arwen. "How much time do we have before the premonition happens?"

"That..." Caught unawares by the question, Arwen took a moment to recover her composure before replying. "It varies most times..."

"I see." Alex’s expression turned grim.

He didn’t have much time but now, he couldn’t even be sure of how long he had left.

"But." Arwen continued. "I recognized a few things from the environment in the premonition. If my guess is correct, it happens during the Emperor’s birthday."

"That’s two days from now," Nadia muttered, her eyes flashing with a complicated emotion.

Having already learned the truth of the situation from Arwen, she understood why Alex was so frightened.

Death in Eventide was decided based on whether one had reached the stipulated time allotted to them the moment they were born.

Naturally, it was possible to kill someone before their time but for a Banshee to have a premonition meant that the person’s death was ascertained.

If there were absolutes in the supernatural world, one was this; escaping the Grim Reaper was impossible.

Her heart shook as she realized she only had 2 days left to live.

At the same time, she was also at ease with it.

It was unfortunate that she wouldn’t get the chance to say goodbye to Arthur but Nadia had long since considered her life forfeit.

Letting out a sigh, Alex muttered. "That’s enough time."

Arwen frowned at the remark while Nadia raised a brow.

"What are you talking about?"

Alex glanced at them and in a determined tone, remarked. "We are going to beat death."

"...What!?" Both women couldn’t control themselves as they exclaimed loudly, their eyes wide open in disbelief.

It was common knowledge about the absoluteness of death.

Even Arwen who wished to save Krobridge knew it was a pipe dream but didn’t just want to sit back and watch.

Yet, Alex was saying such a thing?

’Is it because he’s the Dark Lord?’ Arwen couldn’t help but question Alex’s existence.

However, they were unaware that Alex also understood the severity of the situation and how hopeless it seemed.

But then... What’s the harm in trying?

Just then, a knock was heard at the door.

"Uhmm..." Arwen took a moment to catch her breath before replying. "Who’s there?"

"It’s Ada, young miss."

"Is there a problem?"

"None, young miss but Claudia’s father is here."

"Huh?"

"And he says he wishes to speak with the Dark Lord."

"..." Arwen turned silent as she glanced at Alex.

Alex let out a sigh. "I will go and see him."

"Alright." Arwen nodded.

Nadia stood up and helped Alex get to his feet, then in a soft tone, she remarked. "I believe it’s best if you freshen up and change into something better before meeting him."

Also privy to the fact that Claudia’s father was a Duke, Nadia felt the need to advise Alex on his appearance.

"..." Alex merely nodded as he turned to Arwen.

Arwen quickly replied. "The third room still has a few of my father’s clothes. You can try them on."

Alex nodded in appreciation before turning to leave only to pause after taking a single step toward the door.

"Is there a problem?" Nadia inquired.

Alex shook his head before glancing at Arwen. "It would be best if you can call the Liaison here."

"I already planned to do so even if you didn’t tell me," Arwen remarked.

"We need all the help we can get if we want to stand a chance of escaping death," Alex said before leaving the room with Nadia.

Arwen let out a sigh before muttering in a low tone. "I wonder if it would be okay."
