Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition
Chapter 831 - 831: Story 831: Evolution’s Wrath

The night was thick with rot. The city skyline loomed over the shattered streets, its towering ruins swallowed by mist and creeping infection. Beneath the flickering glow of distant fires, they stirred.

A horde of flesh-crafted nightmares, emerging from the throbbing nest—a pulsating mass of fused corpses and parasitic tendrils that stretched across the ruined city.

Evelyn and Mia stood at the edge of the rooftop, breath heavy, weapons tight in their grip. There was no running.

Then—a monstrous silhouette slithered into view.

It was him.

The Sleeper had changed.

Its brain, once exposed, was now partially shielded by a blackened exoskeleton, shifting like living armor. Its limbs were longer, its claws sharper, its tongue splitting into multiple writhing appendages—each one ending in a needle-like mouth, dripping venom.

And worst of all—it had begun to think.

Mia exhaled. "Well… that's new."

The Sleeper's head tilted, almost as if it understood her words.

Then—it lunged.

Mia barely dodged as its razor tongue snapped past her, shattering concrete. Evelyn fired, her bullets ripping into its shifting flesh, but the creature twisted unnaturally, absorbing the impacts.

It wasn't just adapting.

It was learning.

The horde below shrieked in response, sensing the battle. They surged forward, climbing, crawling, evolving.

Evelyn reloaded. "We need to move—NOW!"

Mia swung her shotgun up, unloading a blast into the Sleeper's face.

The creature barely flinched.

Instead, it grinned.

Then—it spoke.

Not in words, but in a guttural, mind-breaking sound, a noise that slithered into their heads like a thousand whispering voices.

Evelyn staggered, hands pressing to her temples. Visions flooded her mind—endless hunger, mutation, a world reborn in flesh.

The Sleeper wasn't just a monster.

It was the next stage.

And it wanted them to join.

Mia grabbed Evelyn's arm, pulling her back as the Sleeper lashed out.

They ran, leaping over shattered rooftops as the horde climbed after them. Behind them, the Sleeper watched, its grin stretching impossibly wide.

It wasn't chasing.

It knew they had nowhere left to run.

Far below, more figures emerged.

Not mindless zombies.

The Flesh Cult.

Their mutated forms bowed before the Sleeper, whispering in reverence.

Evelyn's blood turned to ice.

Mia swallowed hard. "Tell me you have a plan."

Evelyn's grip tightened on her rifle.

"We don't fight this."

Mia frowned. "Then what the hell do we do?"

Evelyn exhaled.

"We kill it."

The Sleeper lifted its head to the sky, and the city screamed with it.
