Chapter 803 - 803: Story 803: The First Encounter
Evelyn ran through the darkened corridors, her breath ragged, her legs screaming in protest. The overhead lights flickered, casting twisted shadows against the blood-streaked walls. The voice on the intercom had told her to reach Extraction Point Bravo, but could she trust it?
She turned a corner and skidded to a stop.
The hallway ahead was littered with corpses, some fresh, others long decayed. The air was thick with the metallic stench of blood and something worse—something rotting but still alive.
Then she heard it.
A deep, guttural chuckle.
Slowly, her eyes adjusted to the darkness. At the far end of the hallway, something huge crouched in the shadows. Its muscular form rippled with unnatural power, its skin a deep crimson, glistening in the dim light. Its left hand twitched—long, serrated claws scraping against the floor. Its face… or what should have been its face… was a grotesque nightmare.
A massive, pulsating brain sat exposed atop its shoulders, veins bulging and throbbing with each movement. Below it, a gaping maw filled with jagged teeth stretched impossibly wide. A thick, serpentine tongue slithered from between its fangs, tasting the air.
Evelyn's stomach twisted. This wasn't just another infected. This was something new.
It sniffed the air, then let out a wet, gurgling growl.
She took a step back. The creature's head snapped toward her.
Then—it charged.
Evelyn dove to the side as the monster slammed into the wall, cracking the concrete like brittle glass. It moved impossibly fast for its size, recovering in an instant. She scrambled backward, searching for anything—a weapon, an escape, something!
The creature crouched, its massive claws digging into the floor. It let out a horrific screech, then lunged again.
This time, she wasn't fast enough.
A clawed hand swiped across her arm, slicing through fabric and skin. She gasped in pain, crashing to the ground. Blood seeped from the wound, warm and sticky.
The creature loomed over her now, its massive frame casting a shadow of death. Its tongue flicked out, tasting her blood. Then—it paused.
A flicker of recognition crossed its monstrous face.
Evelyn's breath hitched. Did it… remember her?
For a brief second, it didn't attack. But then, something behind its eyes—some buried instinct—snapped.
It roared.
She rolled away just as its claws came down where her head had been. Using every ounce of strength, she pushed herself up and ran.
Behind her, the creature let out a bloodcurdling scream, one that promised it would hunt her down.
And Evelyn knew, without a doubt—
She had just met The Devourer.
