Chapter 1607

Layla Lowell’s pupils contracted, her body filled with an enormous terror, and she suddenly froze for two seconds.

In those brief two seconds, Miranda Jones’s body completed its transformation, and her physical abilities had surpassed that of both of them, the normal humans!

The flimsy rope posed no threat to her; a slight struggle and the rope snapped loose!

Her fingernails had turned completely black, her complexion pale, and her lips purple, as if she had been poisoned.

Charles Carrington, who had been holding her down, was pushed aside by her struggling force, his head violently smashing against the wall.

Layla, meanwhile, stood dazed, her limbs felt as heavy as if they were filled with lead.

By the time she came to her senses, Miranda Jones had already opened her mouth, lunging at her—

A hand suddenly reached out from the side, pulling her away in time and flipping over to shield her in an embrace.

Miranda Jones moved with frightening speed, not giving them time to stand up, charging at them!

"Charles Carrington!"

A shrill scream abruptly pierced the silence of the long sky.

Charles Carrington used his arm to block Miranda Jones’s mouth, forcefully pressing down on her hands!

"Fishie, go back!"

Layla, enduring heartache, scrambled up and ran into the stairwell, grabbing an axe and without mercy, swung it at Miranda Jones’s head!

...

Two hours later.

Chloe Collins and Alexander Foster arrived at the Base Laboratory together.

Just at the doorway, they saw Layla Lowell squatting to one side, sobbing quietly.

She approached and embraced her, telling her it was alright.

Layla, crying, said, "His wound is so deep, so deep. Mr. Green said it’s already been infected. He asked Mr. Green to lock him up, not letting me see him, nor letting Uncle visit."

Chloe wiped away her tears, saying, "I will definitely find a way to save him. He’s a lucky guy; even auto racing, as dangerous as it was, didn’t take his life—this won’t either. You need to pull yourself together, understand?"

Layla nodded, sniffled, and forcefully wiped away her tears, standing up.

"I want to see him. You talk to him, he might listen to you," she said with a sob.

Chase Carrington also looked utterly worried, sitting dry-eyed, feeling helpless.

Chloe looked at him and said, "I’ll go talk to him."

"I’ll go," Alexander said.

The moment his words fell, he had already stepped inside.

The place where Charles Carrington was kept was a secret room in the Base. Inside, there was a curtain mechanism that would fall if he did not want to see the people outside, cutting off half of any sound.

That was the reason Layla couldn’t see him.

Alexander walked in, knocked on the door, and said, "It’s me."

Inside.

Charles Carrington sat at the edge of a table, his hands locked in iron chains, the wound on his arm only crudely treated.

His eyes were dull, void of light.

Upon hearing Alexander’s voice, he lifted his eyes briefly then lowered them again.

He said, "This is my retribution. Let me self-destruct; I don’t want to hurt any of you."

Alexander gave a faint sneer, "Giving up so easily?"

Charles Carrington leaned back, his pale face making him appear exceedingly gaunt.

He did not lower the curtain, yet he did not look at Alexander.

The man had lost all vitality.

"What difference does it make if I don’t give up? Things are already this far; I no longer have a chance," he said.

"What about your daughter, your fiancée? What are you going to do for them?"

Charles Carrington did not speak; he did not know what to do.

The thought alone pained his heart.

He could constantly feel the changes in his body; perhaps soon, he would be like Miranda Jones, attacking anyone he saw.

What could he do?
