Chapter 35: I Changed My Mind

Chapter 35: I Changed My Mind

(SASHA)

"It was just a thought," I say.

He squints. "I don’t understand how you’re comfortable with your omega carrying another alpha’s child. Why aren’t you bothered? Aren’t you supposed to be territorial?"

"I wouldn’t feel threatened." I shrug. "I like kids."

He snickers as though he thinks I’m lying.

"I’m not kidding."

"You like kids?" he squints at me disbelievingly.

"Yes. They’re fun to hang around. My mother’s younger brother has kids. I like playing with them. I give them piggyback rides when we play."

He stares at me as if I’ve grown three heads. "What in the world? I don’t believe you."

"You should though." I laugh, "I’m the fun older cousin."

He gazes at me for a bit. "I still don’t understand why you’re comfortable with me carrying another alpha’s child. You’re not territorial at all." He hesitates. "I mean, it’s convenient, but I still think it’s weird."

"I would have been if I was in love with you. But since I’m not and you’re just a means to an end, I don’t mind what you decide to do with the baby. After all, if you carry it to term, it will get the pressure of bearing my mother grandkids off me."

He looks mortified. "Fuck you."

"Well, that’s not very nice of you Tyler," I smirk.

"You’re something else, Sasha. You’re so fucking selfish." He shakes his head, looking disgusted. "you’re unbelievable. It baffles me how you think I’d carry this child to term just to get your mother’s pressure off your back."

"Don’t be oversensitive. I only suggested that because you won’t be carrying my child either."

"Fuck no. I won’t. God, do you hear yourself, Sasha? You forced me into this. I’d be damned if I carried your child."

"It seems you don’t want to have anyone’s child. So, tell me, what’s your plan, Tyler?" I huff. "Omegas live to breed. I don’t get why you’re so against having a baby. Are you afraid?"

"No, I’m not afraid."

"Then why?"

"I just don’t want to have kids."

"How can you not want to?" I scowl. "You’re meant to have kids. It’s your job."

"My job." He mutters silently.

"What, why do you look annoyed."

"Forgive me, but I find it insulting that my worth in this world is only tied to my ability to breed." He shakes his head as he stuffs gratin potatoes in his mouth. His cheek bulges as he stares at me.

I’m not sure if it’s the wine or something else, but I’m glad his insolence doesn’t get to me. We stare at each other and after a few seconds, I break the silence.

"Why wouldn’t you tell me who the father of your baby is?"

"Because it’s not your business." He says then proceeds to stuff a big piece of chicken in his mouth again.

"Slow down, Tyler. You’re going to choke."

"That’d be convenient for you, no?" he says, spearing the potatoes again. "Won’t you get what you have always wanted? You’ll be head of the Triple Triad Syndicates and get rid of me all so easily. One swoop is all it’ll take."

"Tyler," I sigh. "If I wanted to take you out, I wouldn’t wait for you to choke on your food."

He bites his jaw. "I’m not keeping this baby. So when am I getting the abortion? You said to wait until after the wedding. Well. The wedding is done. When can I get rid of it?"

"You can do it tonight if you want. I don’t care." I shrug.

"You won’t stop me?" he eyes me curiously.

"No." I shake my head. It dawns on me that maybe I misread him when I thought he didn’t want to get rid of the baby. Now I know he really does.

We gaze at each other for the next few seconds silently. I notice that his gaze is weary. When some of his anger seems to subside, he sets his knife and fork on the table. "I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to lash out. I think it’s the hormones." He glances at my glass of wine. "I’d kill door a drink right now."

"Oh, I forgot about the part of you having to go through this sober." I laugh gruffly.

"I’d give whatever to get high right now." He says then regrets his words instantly. I notice how he tenses while avoiding my gaze.

"What?" I scowl. "Did you have a drug problem before?"

"No." he looks guilty. I can tell by the expression on his face.

I get the feeling that there are a lot of things that I don’t know about Tyler yet. Much as Miles and I had run a background check, I still feel there are a lot of things that we missed out on. Of course, it wasn’t our intention to pry into his personal life. It was of no importance to us at the moment. But now that he mentioned it, I’m curious.

"You just said it."

"Let the past be the past, okay?" he says and touches his belly protectively again.

"You do know I can easily find that out."

"Then why haven’t you already?" he gazes at me. "You were so quick to find out what happened to my parents."

"Sure. But Miles wasn’t doing that to look into your personal life. We wanted to know if you’ve worked with other syndicates before. We weren’t checking to see if you have a drug problem. I needed to know just in case I needed to cover my ass. Who knew if you had toes with other mob bosses?"

"Then how do you know whether my parents are alive or dead?"

"I had to find out if you had family. I needed to know whether you were related by blood to anyone who might conspire against me. That’s why I had to find out about your family."

"Right."

"So be honest with me. Did you have a drug problem?" I will him, hoping that he will buy my fake low voice and tell me the truth.

"no." he swallows hand and pushes away from the table, getting to his feet. "When do I get the abortion?"

He’s proving too stubborn and it’s grating on my nerves now. "Hold on until just after the funeral."

"What? You just said you don’t care and that I can have it done tonight."

"I changed my mind."

"Why? Why do you keep changing your mind? I had to wait until after the wedding and now I have to wait again until after the funeral?" he purses, looking frustrated.

"You’ll get the procedure done, Tyler." I say, making sure my voice sounds extra hard. "You still have all the time to do that. Do you think I can’t get you an abortion, if need be, regardless of how far along you are? Even if there wasn’t time?"

He glowers at me. My comment seems to shut him up and I’m glad he’s finally silent for a change. He bites the inside of his cheek, running his hands unintendedly on his belly.

"I don’t believe you, Sasha. But then I have no choice but to trust you won’t screw me up."

"Mmh..." I laugh gruffly. "Right, Tyler. I can feel the trust from here."
