Chapter 718: Chapter 66: One Claw Each_1

As the saying goes, where there are people, there’s drama.

This phrase is equally fitting when applied to the animal kingdom—where there are animals, there’s drama.

However, unlike the blood and gore, cut-throat schemes, and political intrigue of human drama, the animal world seems much simpler and straightforward.

Those with big claws feed on meat, while the cowards eat dirt.

Zheng Qing felt that within a 500-meter radius, there wasn’t a single cat whose claws were bigger than his own. It was this confidence that allowed him to stand there and stare at the forest cat.

Of course, just because he was staring at the forest cat didn’t mean he was oblivious to the movements of other big cats. Although initially, all his attention was indeed on that forest cat, with the movement of several shadows at the corner of his eyes, the black cat’s ears involuntarily twitched.

This was the natural reaction of a cat-like creature.

The steps of the other big cats were incredibly light, hardly making a sound as they stepped on the damp mud. Plus, the howling cold wind blew across the lake, rustling the treetops, making it hard to distinguish the subtle sounds beneath the noise.

Fortunately, he was not an ordinary cat.

"Watch out! There’s a cat attacking from behind!" Li Meng’s shrill scream pierced the tranquility of the forest, appearing somewhat abrupt.

Perfect timing!

Zheng Qing didn’t look back. His ears twitched at the sound of rushing wind behind his head, and a robust Russian Blue cat had already pounced towards the black cat from a diagonal direction.

Zheng Qing’s reaction was quick – turning around to face the enemy was definitely not an option. There was another significant forest cat lying in wait in front of him, and he couldn’t just abandon the situation or run away – both were against Zheng Qing’s interests. In the blink of an eye, he evaluated the pros and cons of all possible responses, and then chose the simplest and most effective method.

"Whoosh!"

A large black shadow glided through the air and smacked heavily on the blue cat.

Blue cats are short-haired and lack thick fur to shield them from external attacks. Not to mention this one was mid-air, completely unexpected of this attack.

"Meow!!" The blue cat cried out in pain, seeming like a baseball getting whacked by a baseball bat. It fell heavily to the ground, rolling a few times in the soft mud.

From not too far away, a young witch whose eyes were red from crying, swung her head to clear her mind, rubbing her eyes without concern for the dirt on her hands.

She felt that she must’ve been seeing things – she thought she just saw the little black cat grow a thick tail!

However, after a few seconds, she began to doubt her initial suspicion. If the black cat didn’t grow such a massive tail, how could the blue cat have been flung away?

With that thought, she instinctively looked around, trying to see a familiar figure holding the Lawbook approaching her. In her mind, if it’s wasn’t the black cat that sent the blue cat flying, then surely someone must’ve cast a Binding Spell.

Yet, everything around her was quiet. There was no other wizard in sight.

So, she turned her attention back to the little black cat, and very soon, she discovered that all her initial suspicions were wrong.

When the blue cat was smacked to the ground, the forest cat who was crouched not too far from the black cat, planning to launch an attack together, got startled. It hesitated for a moment, losing its balance slightly. The several other big cats also stopped in their tracks, tilting their heads to look at the forest cat.

"Meow!"

"Meow?!"

"Awooo..."

Short meows arose one after the other, making the silence even eerier.

The forest cat hesitated for a few seconds while looking at the small black cat before giving up the idea of a peaceful resolution to the situation. It snarled and lunged towards the small cat. Despite being a witch’s cat and having a slightly higher spiritual energy than an ordinary wildcat, it still had limited wisdom. Its natural, animal instincts ended up dictating its actions.

The other big cats followed suit like they received a command, and lunged forward too.

The black cat lifted its small front paw to take a closer look.

The kitten’s foot was tender, with pink pads nestled among its snow-white fur—of course, due to the muddy ground, the fur was slightly stained, but that didn’t affect the aesthetic of the small paw.

What a pity, the black cat lamented inwardly, glancing at the approaching forest cat, before he raised his paw and swatted it away.

The small paw grew with the wind, quickly expanding from the size of a coin to the size of a human palm, then to the size of a bowl.

However, the leg attached to the paw didn’t grow with it; it stayed thin and weak, looking like a thin stalk holding up a massive grinding stone.

Nevertheless, a grinding stone was still heavy, even when held by a thin stalk.

"Bam!"

The massive cat paw smacked heavily onto the forest cat, sending it flying into a poplar tree, and with another swing, it sent the nearby Maine Coon cat flying.

A smack for each one, sending each one flying.

The other big cats, who were slower in reacting, were taken aback by the scene, let out a cry and bolted towards the depths of the forest, running even faster than the teddy bear. Two others who were slower cried out and scurried up a tree, refusing to climb back down.

The forest cat didn’t run away, though. After it managed to get up, it looked somewhat dizzy, and staggered a bit before it found its footing. It seemed like its brain got damaged, as it didn’t run away. Instead, it carefully approached the black cat once again, silently exposing its stomach to the black cat, an apparent act of submission.

While Zheng Qing still couldn’t figure out the use of a big cat as his subordinate, he knew it was certainly better to talk things out. Violence was an animal’s way of resolving a conflict. He, however, was a full-fledged wizard cat.

With this in mind, the black cat satisfiedly extended its paw and patted lightly on the head of the forest cat.

The forest cat pulled its ears slightly backward and emitted a content purr from its throat.

"Ahem!"

The black cat didn’t make a sound but coughed twice before recalling its ’Dharma Phase’ and making its paw small again. It was only then that he remembered the little witch that was ready to burst into tears.

When the black cat leisurely turned to look at Li Meng, the little girl was staring at it with her mouth wide open, looking rather silly. She was still holding the teddy bear in her arms. However, judging from the teddy bear’s thin neck and its weak struggle, it was hard to tell if she was trying to protect the teddy bear or strangle it.

Upon meeting the black cat’s gaze, Li Meng finally managed to swallow her saliva. Only then, did she realize that her mouth was still open wide, her tongue had gone dry and numb from the cold wind.
