Chapter 629: Chapter 298: The Third Party_1
Scarlet flames, tinged with shadows, burst from Zheng Qing’s right eye, spreading across his entire body in a blink of an eye. He was snugly ensconced, as if cloaked in a flowing envelope, embodying the silhouette of the young wizard.
An imperceptible pulse, accompanying the sudden surge of flames, radiated outward, seeming to broadcast a signal that momentarily stymied the demons’ onslaught. Some gray wolves at the forefront even recoiled, whining and tucking their tails, in response to this unusual event.
The white Wolf Demon King jumped off Big Black Wolf’s head, revealing its original form, standing out from the crowd. It cautiously examined the wizard, shrouded with blazing flames.
Demon Kings of equal stature, like the Snake Demon King, Pig Demon King, Bull Demon King, and other Wild Demon Kings edged closer, greedily yet vigilantly encircling the young wizard.
And so, the swarming demons tightly ringed Zheng Qing, neither attacking nor retreating, as a tense yet eerily serene atmosphere permeated the scene.
Occasionally, when the flames swirled and sparks flew further away, the demons would instinctively step back, but would promptly advance again as the fire receded, tightening their encirclement.
No demon could resist the temptation originating from the depths of their bloodline to leave.
Although in their sight, a Flying Rat Demon had already been reduced to a puff of black ash by the flames.
Yet, no demon was foolish enough to take the lead.
After all, they possessed some degree of intelligence; although weak in logical reasoning, they understood the concept of approach and retreat.
Being clever, however, did not mean they could always sit on the sidelines.
Following a low growl exchange among a few leading demons, the white Wolf Demon King took the initiative to offer one of his subordinates.
"Awooo..."
It growled, glancing at the troops behind him, tilting its head to signal a Gray Wolf Demon to advance.
The Gray Wolf Demon, whining and drooping its ears, with trembling limbs, almost wanted to flee. But under the merciless and fierce gaze of the white Wolf Demon King, it had no choice but to approach the pile of flames step by step.
"Awooo!!!"
As soon as it brushed against the wizard’s fiery aura, the wolf demon howled in agony. Its intense cries prompted the circling demon horde to move away slightly, as if putting more distance between them would bring them some comfort.
The scarlet flames, like a sticky substance, clung to the Gray Wolf Demon, pinning it against Zheng Qing. Despite frantically writhing and flailing, it could not escape.
The circling demon horde, amidst their restless commotion, moved a little further away.
The only consolation was that the flames seemed finite. After incinerating the Gray Wolf Demon, the intensity and density of the flames significantly dwindled.
A few leading demons, noticing the discrepancy, exhibited unrestrained cruelty and excitement in their blood-red eyes. They clearly overlooked the somber black shadows within the red flames, which were gradually thickening as the red flames faded away.
Those push towards the flames first were the ill-fated demons.
For example, Stone Yao, Water Yao, Tree Yao and so on, if they were loners, they were inevitably driven by a pack of Wolf Demons or Pig Demons, Bull Demons into the scarlet flames.
One after another, until the black ashes accumulated around Zheng Qing almost reaching a height of three inches, did the scarlet flames gradually wane, and eventually disappear.
The joy that had barely started to rise in the eyes of the leading demons transformed into surprise.
For as the red flames disappeared, a vague black shadow sluggishly crept up from the wizard, taking over the work of the scarlet flames.
"Awooo!!"
The white Wolf Demon King growled a warning, baring its stark white fangs, threateningly gazing at the peculiar black shadow. The other demons, following suit, hurled spine-chilling roars.
The dark figure didn’t make a sound, simply shook its head, opened its eyes, and looked around.
Under the subtly glowing sky, a pair of crystal-clear, bright red eyes were particularly dazzling, making all the eyes of the demons look pale in comparison.
...
...
Zheng Qing kept his eyes closed, not moving.
A few minutes ago, a violent headache had hit him, as if a mighty hammer had been swung down hard on his head, causing him to faint instantly.
But with the fading of the headache, his spirit gradually revived, and his consciousness gradually woke up.
Although his consciousness was awake, Zheng Qing didn’t open his eyes.
The swirling, peculiar burning smell and the intermittent roars of demons all around were giving the young wizard a very strong inclination to play dead—even though he knew there was no real difference for the demons between a live and a dead wizard. After all, the throbbing pain coming from his temples told him that even if he opened his eyes, it would make no difference.
The exhaustion of his mind and magic power had reduced him to a state where he couldn’t even summon a tiny fireball.
Rather than watch those ugly, bloodthirsty demons slowly chew him up, it was better to keep his eyes closed, pretending that he was in a vivid nightmare.
So, Zheng Qing continued to keep his eyes shut, listening to the chaotic roar in his ears, his mind filled with all kinds of absurd thoughts, and various images drifting through his head.
For instance, seven or eight wolf demons rushed at him, biting his arms and ankles, tearing him apart; or those detestable monkey demons wielding huge clubs, smashing him into a pulp, and then stuffing him along with the wild grass beneath him into their mouths.
Various horrifying ways of dying played out in his mind, each more frightening than the last. These terrifying scenarios eventually drove the young wizard to abandon the idea of waiting for death. He groped his hand into the grey cloth bag at his waist.
"If I’m going to die, I’ll take someone with me."
Clutching a few flowing fire talismans, Zheng Qing steeled his determination and finally opened his eyes.
The slightly yellowish sky hinted at a thin, blood-red veil, but there was not a cloud in the sky. The vast expansiveness struck him with a sense of hollow emptiness.
Zheng Qing struggled to prop himself up, scanning his surroundings.
A thick layer of black ash was piled up around him, mixed with many unidentified bones. He picked up a clump of black ash, sniffed it, and was greeted by a burnt smell—it was unclear what had been burnt, but it was definitely the remnants of something that had been on fire.
This interesting discovery caught the young wizard off guard.
Could it be that the puppet was conducting some strange demon evolution experiment? He had never heard of demons roasting wizards over fire before eating them.
Beyond the black ash, at about a hundred meters away, all sorts of demons tightly packed the area. Those flying in the sky, scampering on the ground, swimming in the water—even a Carp Monster, how did it hop about on the grassland?
Of course, this did not prevent Zheng Qing from identifying it by its crimson eyes.
But this Carp Monster was not the most eye-catching one.
Among these demons, the most prominent one was a black Tiger Demon.
It stood over two meters tall at the shoulder, its eyes shone red, and it stationed itself at the front of the demon crowd. With its head held high and tail slightly drooping, it looked disdainfully in all directions. Although it was alone, it suppressed the other demons with just its presence alone.
