Chapter 618: Chapter 287 Fenrir_1
Unlike most wild demons Zheng Qing had encountered.
The Wolf Demon Group before the Absolution hunting team clearly possessed strict discipline and rigorous ranking.
For example, Grey Wolf Demons would lower their ears and sag their tails in front of the big Black Wolves; the Black Wolves always had one to three Grey Wolf Demons of varying numbers as minions. And whether it was the Black Wolf Demons or the Grey Wolf Demons, they all showed moderate advancement and retreat, and remained composed throughout the process of encircling the Absolution hunting team.
Therefore, there must be a Wolf King commanding them.
Zheng Qing gently rotated the brass telescope in his hand, scanning over each wolf, trying to find that mysterious figure.
But again and again, he failed to discover the enigmatic Wolf King — though it’d be wrong to say he gained nothing. At the very least, Zheng Qing had discovered an exceptionally unique Black Wolf Demon within the pack.
Among all the Wolf Demons seen so far, it was the most probable candidate for the role of Wolf King.
While ordinary grey wolves living on the Fresbeleia tundra stand around 60 to 80 cm tall at the shoulder, the grey wolf demons before the Absolution hunting team all stood around a meter tall. Black Wolf Demons, by comparison, were slightly taller, with their height mostly falling around 1.5 meters. But the largest Black Wolf stood two meters tall at the shoulder. Even when its head wasn’t lifted, it could reach above the knees of the Blue Fatty. It stood out among a group of Wolf Demons, extraordinarily conspicuous.
More importantly, all the Wolf Demons would voluntarily lower their bodies and tilt their heads, revealing their vulnerable throats under the Black Wolf Demon’s fangs when they passed it.
The reason Zheng Qing didn’t believe it to be the Wolf King because a white wolf cub, the size of a fist, was lounging on the big black wolf’s head, seemingly donning a short white horn. If this Black Wolf was indeed the Wolf King, then undoubtedly no Wolf Demon within the pack could or would climb onto its head.
Even if that white wolf cub was its offspring.
Of course, Zheng Qing also contemplated whether the white wolf cub had any special status. But through the telescope, looking into its round red eyes and the fine fur all over its body, it appeared to be a Wolf Demon pup, not more than a month old.
...
While Zheng Qing was looking for the Wolf Demon King at the top of the hill, the small party that went down the hill to rendezvous with Blue Bird had already started to make short range assaults on the Wolf Demons.
Referring to it as a small group is in fact a slight overstatement — in total, there were only three members: Zhang Ji Xin, Blue Fatty, and the little marten, Diao’er, who had cleaned the mud off its body and regained its shiny, purple fur.
The detachment, centered around Blue Fatty, swung a huge piece of tree trunk as he scared off and deterred the surrounding Wolf Demons. Zhang Ji Xin moved around The Giant, alerting him of any blind spots he might not be aware of, such as behind him or under his legs. Diao’er, on the other hand, was nestled on the tip of Blue Fatty’s nose, guiding the rescue team.
Of course, Zheng Qing and Xiao Xiao, who were located behind the small team, were constantly on guard. While maintaining the Rune Array, they were also prepped with an abundance of talismans and spells, ready to aid the rescue team at any moment.
Overall, this arrangement was well within the norms, nothing particularly outstanding, but there were also no significant weaknesses.
"Achoo!" Blue Fatty sneezed suddenly in the middle of their journey, then muttered in his deep voice, "Diao’er, why don’t you climb onto my head... Staying on my nose all the time not only obstructs my vision, your tail keeps crawling into my nostrils, and it tickles!"
As he spoke, he sneezed again.
Several Grey Wolf Demons, lead by a large Black Wolf, pounced at them swiftly. Perhaps they thought the Giant being distracted was a great opportunity to attack. However, they seemingly overlooked the big stick in Blue Fatty’s hand. Under the swing of Blue Fatty’s huge stick, those Wolf Demons fell back even faster, leaving only howls in their wake.
"What if I light a torch on the tip of your club? " Zhang Ji Xin stood under Blue Fatty’s feet and shouted, "Do you think these Wolf Demons are still afraid of fire?"
Blue Fatty paused for a moment, scratched his head, and then thrust his club in front of the Red-faced Male Wizard, "You can try..."
...
It truly felt thrilling to stab someone in the back.
As Blue Bird pulled his longsword out from the back of the neck of a Wolf Demon, he couldn’t help but contemplate this thought. Although it didn’t sound particularly honorable, taking advantage of one’s unawareness, catching them off guard, and achieving victory was what mattered most.
As these thoughts flashed through his mind in a split second, the young swordsman had already dashed to the edge of the cordon of the Wolf Demon pack, dragging his longsword.
Without raising his head, he could already sense familiar magic fluctuations emanating from the nearby small hill.
There were also those coming down the hill, entangled in combat with the Wolf Demons—familiar figures.
"Blue Fatty has brought out his big guys... It seems the situation is really bad."
"Hm, it seems Little Diao’er is safe."
The swordsman noticed the small purple dot on the head of the Blue Giant. A smile crept onto the corner of his mouth as he contemplated it silently.
A gust of wind hummed in his ears, he shifted his gaze slightly, catching a silhouette charging at him from the side in his peripheral vision.
"Slash Strike: Yan Contrasecret Technique!"
Suddenly, his figure shot up, like a massive bat. With a mere flash, he silently appeared behind the attacking Wolf Demon. Before the confused creature had time to relocate him, the cold longsword pierced through the narrow gap in its neck, severing its last breath of life.
Blue Bird didn’t linger to scavenge war spoils or hide his figure again. Instead, he boldly revealed himself and dashed towards the small hill — his teammates were merely fifty meters away, while the nearest Wolf Demon was still a hundred meters off. A simple sprint would get him to safety.
...
As the Blue Giant swung his flaming stick across the wolf pack, while Blue Bird carried his longsword, rushed, and attacked from behind, quietly striking, Zheng Qing’s telescope was not continuously focused on them.
He had utmost confidence in his teammates.
In comparison, he was more concerned about the Wolf Demon King, which had yet to show up.
Whether it was the black Wolf Demon being smashed by the Blue Giant’s stick or the Gray Wolf Demon spilling blood from Blue Bird’s sharp sword, the Wolf Demon King never made an appearance, leaving the wolf group to spiral around a few hard bones aimlessly.
Not until Blue Bird broke through the wolf pack’s blockade line, almost reaching back within the range of the Absolution Hunting team’s Rune Array.
The tallest Wolf Demon suddenly stood up, flicking its ears and trotting forward a few steps.
This abrupt action immediately drew Zheng Qing’s attention.
He lifted his brass telescope, keeping the lens aimed at the tallest black Wolf Demon.
Immediately following that, he noticed the white wolf cub, which had been sitting on the black wolf’s head. It suddenly stood up, stretched lazily while crouching on its limbs, seemingly laughing at Zheng Qing’s telescope lens, shaking its tail in the process.
Zheng Qing put down the telescope, shook his head vigorously, rubbing his eyes.
Illusion, it must be an illusion.
He lifted his telescope once again, aiming at the black wolf.
The white cub atop the wolf’s head disappeared.
The young wizard stood dumbfounded for a few seconds, his face dramatically changed, he threw his telescope and ran downhill.
"Watch out for the white wolf!!!" he yelled as he ran, "Beware of that white wolf!!! Fall back immediately!!"
...
"Watch out!!!"
Before the joy of reunion could be etched on his face, Blue Bird heard Zhang Ji Xin’s terrified scream. His voice was so fearful that for a moment, Blue Bird almost mistook it for the howl of a Banshee.
A blink later, he quickly sobered up, turned around, drew his sword, pushed with both legs, and somersaulted backward.
But it may be a bit too late.
The last image the young swordsman in mid-air saw was a massive mouth large enough to swallow sky and earth - its upper jaw obliterated the sky over his head, its lower jaw covered the ground under his feet, the vibrant red tongue was filled with sharp barbs, the thick saliva corroded both earth and air as if it was sulfuric acid.
Hovering mid-air, the swordsman had no room to maneuver, he could only watch as the massive mouth came closer and closer.
For some reason, the shape of the rainbow fish, which he had seen earlier, surfaced in his mind.
"Fenrir."
Blue Bird muttered quietly, his sword, after all, didn’t get the chance to raise. His vision plunged into darkness as he was swept into the stomach by the massive tongue.
