Chapter 450: Chapter 119 Little John Neville_1
As the saying goes, when you hit someone, don’t hit their face so that you can meet them again another day; when you insult someone, don’t strike at their weaknesses, always leave some room for face-saving in public. But ’Half-Face,’ or better said, John Neville, did not seem to acknowledge these conventional virtues. In the presence of Andrew Taylor, he brazenly brought up the recent episode from a practical class where the junior scion of the Taylor family avoided a challenge from Karen’s family and passively declared a truce, causing the atmosphere in the entire lounge to become awkward.
In Alpha Academy, especially among the aristocratic disciples, the sense of ’honor’ always occupies a delicate position. Two unfamiliar wizards can become close friends because of shared ’honor’, or they can be adversaries for life because of a small blow to their ’face’.
That’s why most wizards of Alpha are always cautious when they meet for the first time.
Carefully choosing every word, phrase, sentence and gesture made, even the gaze - after all, no one wants to spark trouble for no reason.
Therefore, when Neville openly taunted Andrew Taylor in front of everyone, instead of firing back, most people in the room were cautiously reflecting on themselves, wondering if they had done something wrong.
To those who did not understand the situation, such cautious reactions were often described as ’not wearing their emotions on their face,’ or as ’aristocratic demeanor,’ ’great wizard temperament,’ and other positive words. Of course, to the eyes of other colleges in the top university, this was simply more proof of Alpha’s ’hypocrisy’.
Although Andrew Taylor hadn’t been at Alpha Academy for long, he easily got the hang of Alpha students’ way of interaction based on his similar family background.
So, after his face blushed, the young werewolf didn’t make any over-the-top reactions. He merely appeared a bit bewildered - embodying the phrase ’feel rebuffed with cold indifference’ in describing his current feelings.
He was a little confused as to why this senior official of the Blood Comrades was expressing discontentment towards him.
He didn’t understand, and Neville naturally had no obligation to explain.
For Neville, there were too many reasons to be annoyed.
The ’gambling’ business he used to monopolize in the Blood Comrades was being forced to surrender a lot of shares due to the rising star who owned this room, causing a significant loss in profits; and the new channels he had painstakingly developed were also being poached midway.
This made him feel like he was gradually becoming ’useless’.
This was something he could never tolerate.
Neville could never forget the year he turned seven when his three-year-old sister, assessed to have no magical talent, was taken out of the house in a basket by the housekeeper and never returned.
The only explanation given by the elders was ’she was of no use’.
Little Neville clearly remembered that before his sister left, she was pulling on his finger, continuously asking for ’candy, candy’, while he tightly held onto his ’panda milk candy’ unwilling to let go.
So, since the owner of this room forced him to surrender a lot of benefits, he constantly felt a strong sense of danger, fearing that he might be taken out of the house in a basket at any time, afraid that the candy in his hand would be taken away by someone else.
And now, these guys were attempting to manage and control the market!
This was making him more furious.
As a traditional businessman, John Neville had always believed that nothing was more important than being honest, especially for the ’gambling’ business. Every bronze coin the customers bet was a representation of their trust in him.
And now, he was about to ruin his own credibility himself - even if the customers didn’t know about it, deep down, he knew he was heading towards bankruptcy.
A businessman heading towards bankruptcy would naturally have the impulse to break the pot if it is not worth the cost.
It’s less about Neville mocking the young werewolf from the Taylor family, but more about him expressing some sort of discontent towards the owner of this room by ’kicking the dog’.
"Oh dear, young people these days are too impulsive." A raspy, obsequious voice came from behind the door, breaking the awkward atmosphere in the room.
Many people breathed a sigh of relief.
Little John Neville turned around and, as expected, saw a familiar figure.
"Young man, it’s natural to feel a bit heated ... After all, we are not like you, just a shadow hanging on the wall," the wizard said, who wore his hat even indoors. He glanced at the photo frame hanging behind the door and sneered, "At least we still have a ’good heart’."
In the wooden frame behind the door, was a photograph of a tall, skinny wizard — an ’acquaintance’ of Zheng Qing’s, the owner of the Wandering Bar on Beta Town’s Pedestrian Street, and rumored by students to be a ’Wandering Wizard’, who was a Black Wizard.
"Conscience?" The Wandering Wizard chuckled: "Such a nostalgic word."
Perhaps the cramped area of the picture frame restricted him, the Wandering Wizard in the picture lifted his arm but eventually gave up pulling his pointed hat.
"John is right ... we all still have a good heart." The figure sitting in the main seat of the sofa finally turned his head, seeming to notice the unusual atmosphere in the room, and looked at the guest standing at the door.
He then pushed the tea tray on the coffee table and offered, "This is the ’Panda Milk Candy’ just delivered by the Wandering Bar; it has a pure taste... would you like a piece?"
Finally, Little John Neville looked up.
His blue-green eyes looked somewhat dull in the room.
His gaze rested on the ’Panda Milk Candy’ for a moment, and finally returned to the shadow beneath his hat.
"I thought I would only see you after the Hunting Meeting, sir." Neville greeted the fat wizard sitting in the main seat with very formal language.
The fat wizard was one member of the Gemini of the Blood Comrades, the vice president of the Alpha Academy student council, and the leader of the Auspicious Association.
"It was just a performance." Sepulano gave a forced twist to his lips and his voice was very low: "I’m not Lei Zhe or Lord Augustus... no one will notice whether a low-ranked hunting team has sent a substitute player to this hunt."
"It’s a shame," Neville sighed exaggeratedly. "I just recommended the Auspicious hunting team to a few young wizards..."
There was silence in the living room for a while.
Everyone watched aimlessly at the wasteland outside the window.
In the hunting ground, although the Roe Deer, the prey, had nimbly passed through the cross-defense line of two hunting teams, there was no ripple caused in this room.
"I heard that when you went out to work today, you didn’t wear a mask?" After a while, Sepulano finally spoke.
His gaze was still fixed on the hunting ground, his face expressionless. None could discern anything from the glossy eyes set deep into his fatty face.
"The school is so large, and my features are quite distinctive... since everyone will become familiar with me sooner or later, I decided to stop bothering with all that hassle." Half-Face answered cheerily, raising his head to reveal his heterochromatic eyes.
At last, Sepulano took his eyes away from the window.
He stared at Half-Face.
Not until Lǜèyǎnér looked away, disconcerted, did the fat wizard of Alpha coldly say, "Whether you can be recognized or not is a matter of probability... and whether you wear a mask or not is a matter of attitude."
"If you don’t even have the attitude to hide, then don’t blame others for standing by the next time the school uses you as an example."
