Chapter 202: Soaring to Safety
Skybrand’s wings burst open, her face grim but determined.
She grabbed Neuro’s arm, feeling his lean frame tense with surprise.
With a powerful flap, they lifted into the sky, the wind roaring around them.
Velvet Demon watched them rise, her eyes wide.
"Hey! Where are you going?"
Heavenly Demon stood tall, his eyes blinking as if he’d missed a step.
"They’re running?"
Skybrand glared down, her swords still glowing from battle.
"We’re not running because we’re weak!"
Neuro adjusted his visor, his breath steady despite the scratches on his face.
"Exactly. We already got the data we need."
Heavenly Demon tilted his head, his face a mix of confusion and anger.
"Data? What data?"
Skybrand’s grin was sharp, her wings tilting as they soared higher.
"Next time, we’ll be the ones winning."
Velvet Demon’s mouth fell open, her face twisting comically.
"You... you dare run away after all that talk?"
Heavenly Demon’s jaw clenched, his fists tightening.
"They’re actually running?"
Skybrand banked to the right, the wind rushing past.
"Neuro, you sure you got everything?"
Neuro’s visor flickered as he checked his screens.
"Everything. Their ether usage, battle styles, and recovery rates. More than enough."
Skybrand’s wings flared, catching the moonlight.
"Good. Then next time, we take them down."
Below them, Velvet Demon stomped her foot.
"You can’t just leave! That’s not how this works!"
Heavenly Demon’s eye twitched, his aura flaring.
"They’re mocking us."
Skybrand laughed, her voice carrying in the wind.
"Enjoy the night, demons. We’ll be back."
Velvet Demon’s face turned red, her expression a mix of fury and shock.
"You cowards!"
Heavenly Demon’s teeth ground together.
"They think they can just fly away?"
Skybrand’s wings beat harder, the air slicing around them.
"They can try to chase us, but we’ll be ready."
Neuro’s hand rested on her shoulder, his voice calm.
"Skybrand, we need to plan. Their regeneration is faster than expected."
Skybrand’s face hardened.
"We’ll find a way."
"Next time, we’ll make sure they can’t just heal through our attacks."
Neuro nodded, his eyes scanning the horizon.
"They’re tough, but not unbeatable."
Skybrand’s grin returned.
"Then let’s get stronger too."
Below, Velvet Demon glared at the sky, her fists clenched.
"They’ll pay for this."
Heavenly Demon’s expression softened into a cold smirk.
"Let them come."
"They’ll learn what it means to challenge the Heavenly Demon Sect."
Skybrand and Neuro disappeared into the clouds, the night swallowing them.
The wind carried their laughter back to the ground.
---
Velvet Demon crossed her arms, her head tilting as she stared at the empty sky.
"To think they’d run..."
"I never thought they’d be cowards."
Heavenly Demon let out a small chuckle.
"Yeah, they’re high AA-rank heroes."
"I guess they value their lives more than their pride."
He leaned against a broken wall, a grin on his face.
"But still, how about my acting? Am I good enough?"
Velvet Demon smirked, her eyes glinting with amusement.
"Yes, Master. You played your part perfectly."
"They’ll never doubt your hero identity again."
Zain’s grin widened, his teeth flashing.
"Yeah. Now I can rest easy as a hero."
He stretched his arms as if nothing had happened.
Velvet Demon laughed, her voice echoing off the stone walls.
"You looked so serious! I almost believed you were actually mad at them."
Zain raised an eyebrow.
"Hey, I’ve got to keep up the hero act. It’s all about appearances."
Velvet Demon placed a hand on her hip, still smiling.
"True. And with that performance, they’ll never suspect a thing."
Zain’s smirk grew even wider.
"Let’s head back. I want to see how the others turned out after their training."
Velvet Demon nodded.
"Of course, Master."
Zain crossed his arms, his gaze distant for a moment.
"I want to see how much they’ve improved."
"After a month in that brutal war simulation, they should be a lot stronger."
Velvet Demon tilted her head slightly, her lips curving.
"Stronger than those two, I hope."
Zain let out a soft chuckle, his smirk unwavering.
"Let’s find out later."
They began walking away from the battlefield.
The ground was cracked, and smoke rose from where Skybrand’s attacks had sliced through the ground.
Zain glanced back at the spot where Neuro and Skybrand had vanished.
"But those two are quite tricky, too."
"They might be back sooner than we think."
Velvet Demon giggled.
"Let them come. I’ll just kick them again."
Zain laughed.
"Just don’t let them hit you this time."
Velvet Demon rolled her eyes.
"Please. Like they could."
The night was cool, the stars bright.
---
As Velvet Demon and Zain left the area, the ground suddenly shifted, and a shadow rose near the broken wall.
A black wolfman appeared, his fur bristling and his claws sharp.
He watched the two vanish into the night, his eyes narrow and gleaming.
"So, the new Heavenly Demon Sect is led by the Heavenly Demon himself."
He flexed his claws, the tips glinting under the moonlight.
"And that one is the same as the hero Heavenly Demon. Interesting."
He turned his head slightly, his ears twitching.
"I don’t know what you’re planning, Heavenly Demon."
"But I will make sure to ruin it."
He grinned, his fangs sharp and white.
"This will be my revenge for you ruining so many of my plans."
The wind blew softly, rustling the dirt at his feet.
His eyes locked onto the trail left by Zain and Velvet Demon.
He dropped to all fours, his muscles tense and coiled like a spring.
"You won’t get away this time."
He moved forward, every step silent and smooth, the ground barely shifting beneath him.
His claws scraped lightly, leaving small marks in the dirt and a grin on his face.
"And I’ll make sure you suffer worse than me."
His tail flicked back and forth, his anticipation building.
"I’m already smirking just thinking about what will happen to you when your secret is out."
The wolfman’s body began to blur, his form fading into the darkness like a wisp of smoke.
"You might be the Heavenly Demon..."
"But I’m the nightmare that will haunt you."
He vanished completely, his laughter lingering, a faint promise of the chaos.
