Chapter 99: How to Have a Baby Without... Well, You Know

Carter came out of the visiting room. "Those two babies are adorable. I can’t wait to get them back to the ranch to help spoil them. You boys keep up the good work with Allison and she’ll be at home before Emma and Leo know it." Then he left the waiting room.

Leo looked at Daniel. "You mean Ed and Carter live near you all?"

"Near? Hell, they live right next door right through the pathway," Hyden responded. "Daniel’s grandfather has 5000 acres called the Z1 ranch, and the Hawthorns own The ECH Ranch Enterprises next door—it is 25,000 acres large. And they are now partners and have a smaller partner with a building program for pod homes for the less fortunate. You might know their names if I tell you—William Craig and his partner Jonathan Harrison. Is Jonathan Harrison the model?"

"We do ask one thing—anything you see out on the ranch, due to privacy, that you don’t bring it back to the general public and repeat. It’s not anything going on bad, it’s just that some people like to keep their public lives and their private lives separate."

Emma and Leo agreed that there would be no discussion about anyone’s private lives that lived on the ranches. Leo did have one question. "What about this housing we talked about? Who do we need to pay for the utilities? How do we get food? What’s all that about?"

"That’s something that grandfather needs to talk to you about, and I suspect he’ll be around before long to fill you in on everything that you need to know prior to you coming out for a visit," Daniel replied. "I’ll be taking Robert home first and getting him settled in with his Uncle Lex, and my brother Ty can help with him while I’m scurrying between the hospital and the ranch. Of course, dad will probably want to help take care of Robert, and then there’s all the in-laws, outlaws and inside laws that will want to take care of him."

"Well, you don’t have to worry about that with me and Emma. Both of us are orphans, so no family to worry about."

"What? You got a big ass family now and we are loud. With a name like Spinelli you can just imagine," Hyden retorted. This brought a round of laughter from everyone.

The nurse walked out. "Allison is a little hungry. Whichever one of you boys wants to come in and satisfy her, you can. This will not count as a visit whatsoever. I’m bending those rules thanks to Mr. Carter—she now has carte blanche around here."

"The entire medical staff has been put on full alert. Mr. and Mrs. Rich, the cafeteria has been instructed by the Hawthorns that anytime you’re hungry, they are to make food available for you of your choice. They had no idea that parents such as yourselves were struggling just being here and that you were going without food or with limited food because of the lack of resources. But in the words of Ed Hawthorne: ’Like Hell that will never happen in this hospital again or heads will roll.’"

Daniel stood up. "This is my time. I’m a little full so enjoy yourselves—go enjoy a meal. Allison will enjoy her meal, I know for a fact, but remember about a couple more visitors that will come to see you."

Hyden was standing by waiting for Daniel to feed Allison before they went down to the cafeteria. "Emma, you and Leo go enjoy your meal in peace. I’ll stay here and in a little while we will be down ourselves so that way we can all catch up. You two have a lot of thinking to do."

Leo stood up, took his wife’s hand and they walked to the door down the hallway.

Reggie walked into Max’s room and gently closed the door behind him. He smiled as he approached the bed. "Max, are you feeling okay today?"

"Yes, Reggie, I’m feeling real good today. Erin is doing great also—he seems to be very happy about something."

"Yes, he is Max. He is very happy and he is giving me permission to tell you the truth about his existence. What befell you was an act of evil, but it brought forth something never seen before in the Genman or human society. I fear to tell you that we have been using Ben for Erin to survive, and for you not to reject him, he needed the genetic material of the one who started his development."

"But he is waiting on his father to arrive. You and his father have to get together or he will cease to exist within you by his choice."

Max sat up in the bed. "What are you talking about? Ben is his father. We have been making sure that he has all the nutrients that he needs, and Ben has been coming to me and helping by leaving himself inside of me every day."

"Just as Erin intended, Max, but Ben is not his father. He has a complete family that is coming. He has a father, a mother and an older sister who has struggled but is now getting better and will soon be here."

Max was full of questions but yet blown away. "What do you mean he has a sister? I have no other children and Ben doesn’t have any girls."

"No, Ben doesn’t have any daughters, because Erin’s father is Leo. His mother’s name is Emma and his older sister’s name is Allison, which he will grow up and protect from harm. Erin would not let you know this beforehand because everything had not been set in place. But now that things are progressing the way they have, he felt that it was time that you needed to know. But as he says, time is short and you two must make a connection and what do humans call it—make love."

"If you speak of this to someone, they will call you lose in the head, so even though you know, you must refrain from the speech of this. It will only bring you heartache. I will tell my dad what Erin’s decision was and why he did what he did so that he could survive. And he will not only be my brother, but he will be a brother to all Genmen, hybrids and humans."

Reggie walked back to the door, opened it and left the room, leaving Max in a confused state.

Max rubbed his belly. "I guess it’s true. You are a special child and you are destined for greatness for all."

Reggie walked out to the living room area and got up on the couch and went to Claude. "I need to talk to my dad. He must know the truth and things must be left to progress the way they should naturally. He should not interfere with anything that is not of Erin’s plans."

Claude looked at his stepson. "Okay, when he gets back from the hospital with his visit with Mr. Zack, I’ll give you time to talk to him. But I understand we’re going to get some new neighbors."

"Yes, Leo and Emma Rich with their daughter Allison. They are all very smart and they’re going to help the Z1 become a mighty place for learning. And Leo doesn’t know it yet, but he’s going to have a little boy soon," Reggie looked at him.
