Chapter 71: Baby or Bug?

Rodney was getting along okay with everyone else in the household. Martin had even warmed up to Hans’s most recent stray that he brought back with him. The only thing Rodney was worried about was who was going to take the virus out of his stomach. He knew his time was getting close, but there were no people from the white rooms to help him.

Lex had gone over everything with Rodney, but mentally he was just too immature to deal with the fact he was not carrying a virus—he was in fact carrying a child that would soon be here. 3D scans, heartbeat monitors—nothing convinced Rodney that there was a child within him. Lex was really concerned that if he went into labor and started delivery, he might very well snap or even freak out during the birthing process. This could be dangerous for him and the child that he carried.

As soon as Hans walked in the house, Rodney was all over him. The young man was stuck like glue. Who could blame him? This huge man rescued him and brought him to this beautiful place with all these people around. No one had to stay in the room, no one had to watch the window on the wall.

Hans took Rodney on walks as they viewed the ranch. He pointed out other Genmen with large bellies and told him that they had babies inside of them—that’s what it meant to be pregnant.

Lex had an idea a few days ago. The next time somebody went into labor, Hans could bring Rodney to the special room and he could watch the delivery of the baby through the two-way glass. This would bring Rodney to the realization that there was something else inside of him other than a virus.

Martin and Hans both thought it was a good idea to expose Rodney to something new he’d never seen before—the giving of life through the birth of a child.

Hans was out in the front as usual with Kirk and Rodney when Martin answered the phone. It was Lex.

"I got one coming in—it’s an older gentleman who has had multiple children. Shouldn’t have a problem at all; should be able to squeeze it right on out. You want to bring Rodney over and show him what goes on? You’re welcome to it."

Martin stepped onto the front porch and motioned for Hans to come over. "Lex just called. He’s got one coming in active labor—it won’t take long, so you might want to carry Rodney over to the center and let him watch the birth. In fact, I’ll leave and go with the two of you. We can make it a family event."

Hans was all smiles. He walked over to Kirk and Rodney and asked Rodney if he would like to go see a special show just for him. Kirk was a little disappointed, but he could always go talk to his dad.

Rodney was excited. They walked into the center, and Lex showed them into the special viewing room and turned on the monitor. There was no doubt about it—they had a front row view. There were several other monitors that had been placed where they could see different angles of the birth. Hans sat Rodney in his lap, wrapped his arm around his belly, and spoke softly. "Now this is what you need to see—the miracle of life."

Rodney watched as the Genman was laying on the table with his legs up in the stirrups. He saw the Genman’s vent begin to leak a little fluid, then as the Genman pushed, the vent began to widen. Soon the top of the baby’s head was seen, and the Genman was definitely grunting and groaning as he began to push the child from his body. Rodney did not remove his eyes nor look away from the event that was happening in front of him.

Soon the head was out and the Genman started to push again. Lex rotated the baby and the shoulders were delivered, then with one final push, the baby slid free of its parent. Rodney looked with intense stare at the umbilical cord that was still inside of the parent and still attached to the child. Lex cut the cord, tied it off, cleaned the baby up, and the baby started to cry. He showed on the monitor the baby boy and carried it to the parent so he could start to nurse. Lex went back and cleaned the Genman up from the delivery, did a cursory exam, then removed his legs from the stirrups.

"Congratulations, Walter. You have a beautiful baby boy—that was a great delivery. You did fine." The dad was very happy as his son suckled his gland.

Rodney was staring at what took place in front of them. "You mean to tell me his belly had a baby in it and not a virus, and that baby came out his vent?"

"Yes, that’s true. He had a baby inside of him just like you do." Martin’s voice was gentle. "What they told you at the center was a lie. You’ve never been sick, young man. They took you back—if you can remember—when your vent got sore, they said it was due to the virus. It didn’t happen the way they said it did. You were sent back there to be bred after they put a special fluid inside your body to make it mature enough to conceive a child. And every time, just like the other ones that you were with, their bodies swelled up and their vents got sore. After the body went back down, they delivered a baby."

Martin continued, his voice steady and reassuring. "You don’t have to worry about it—we’ll be right with you every step of the way. Hans on one side of you, me on the other side, and Lex will help deliver your baby when it’s time. It will hurt—I’m not going to lie, because you’re small—but you can do it. And when it’s all through, you will have a beautiful baby boy that we will all help you take care of, just like we help with Kirk. In our house, no one is left out, no one is left behind. We take care of one another."

Rodney turned to Hans and grabbed hold of him and hugged him as he started crying. "What did they do this to me for? Why would they mean to put a baby inside of me and tell me it was a virus? Were they trying to steal my baby?"

"Yes, young man, they were. And if we had not come in and rescued you, they would have stolen it from you, just like they did to all the others." Hans’s voice was firm but gentle.

"Mr. Hans, what did they do with number 301’s baby? He was way younger than me, and I know he was so big. He didn’t make it, did he?"

"I can tell you the truth. Number 301 did not make it through the birth, but his baby did. You know him as Abraham—Miss Angela has him and is raising him as her own with all the love she has. We can stop by and visit him if you want to."

"Yes, I would. At least I know a part of him is still around. I can look at Abraham and still see my friend."

Rodney looked at his belly move. "All I have to do now is pick out a good name, and if you and Mr. Martin will help me, it’ll be a good one."

The three of them headed out of the center, going back home but stopping by Angela’s on the way so he could tell everybody that he had a baby in him and that baby would be born soon. But he couldn’t do it by himself—he guessed he didn’t have any nectar glands, so he would need them to help him raise his child.
