Chapter 59: Food

Riven stirred awake, blinking against the dim light filtering through the small barred window. The familiar dampness of the underground cell clung to his skin, but something else filled the air this morning—something warm, savory, and unmistakably delicious.

Food.

His stomach tightened with anticipation. The scent was similar to the meal Xavier had brought him before, and like a well-trained pet, Riven’s body responded before his mind fully caught up. He sat up, ignoring the stiffness in his muscles from the night before, and turned his head toward the cell door.

He had been tossed around so much in these last few days. His isekai had not been the smoothest in the least. But hey, at least there was an abundance of hot men, he was in a BL novel after all... He missed his little bunny Eli the most. Would he ever get the chance to meet him again?1

Xavier was already there.

But something was different.

The usual imposing figure stood by the bars, silent, rigid, and avoiding Riven’s gaze. He didn’t speak, didn’t give any of his usual gruff instructions. Instead, he merely pushed the tray through the small opening, then turned his back as if being near Riven any longer would be a mistake.

Riven’s eyes narrowed slightly as he observed the subtle shift in Xavier’s demeanor. The hesitation in his movements. The tension in his broad shoulders. The uncertainty in his presence.

Riven smirked to himself.

"So, he’s still thinking about last night."

He stretched lazily before reaching for the food, deciding—for once—not to tease. Not yet, anyway. He had more important things to focus on. How long was he going to be in here, he was getting annoyed! He needed action!

As Riven ate, his gaze flickered back to Xavier, who was still standing by the entrance, still avoiding looking at him.

And then he noticed something.

In Xavier’s large hands was a bundle of fabric.

Riven’s eyes gleamed with interest, recognising the neatly folded clothes he had worn before his bath—now freshly washed.

Xavier had cleaned them.

For a moment, something unfamiliar twisted in Riven’s chest. It was one thing to be fed, to be bathed under orders, but to have his clothes washed?

Xavier didn’t have to do that.

He felt more like a princess than a prisoner at this point.

"You’re more thoughtful than I thought, Xavier."

He didn’t say it out loud.

Instead, he watched.

Watched as Xavier shifted uncomfortably, still refusing to meet his eyes.

Watched as those strong, capable hands gripped the fabric a little too tightly.

Watched as Xavier clenched his jaw, seemingly at war with himself.

Riven smirked again but kept his expression neutral.

He would not push.

Not now.

Something was off.

But since he was a good person, he would not push.

Once Riven finished eating, Xavier finally moved.

Without a word, he unlocked the cell and stepped inside.

Riven remained still, waiting.

He could tell from Xavier’s stiff posture that this wasn’t just about dressing him.

No, there was something else.

As Xavier knelt before him and began unfolding the clothes, Riven tilted his head.

"Why does this feel different?"

His teasing nature wanted to make a comment, to say something sly about how intimate this moment was, but...

He didn’t.

Instead, he allowed Xavier to help him as he had before—silent, obedient, watching.

For the first time, Riven held his tongue.

And as Xavier carefully pulled the clean shirt over his head, adjusting it over his shoulders, Riven felt something shift between them.

Xavier’s touch was firm yet careful.

His fingers brushed against Riven’s skin, but unlike before, there was no hesitation—only purpose.

Yet, the tension was undeniable.

Neither spoke.

Neither acknowledged the strange, simmering energy between them.

It was thick, suffocating.

Xavier worked in mechanical movements, avoiding eye contact, focusing only on the task at hand.

And Riven let him.

He observed the way Xavier’s jaw clenched, how his breathing was slightly uneven, how his hands—though steady—lingered a little too long in certain places.

Something had changed.

Something that neither of them were ready to admit.

But it was there.

Riven could feel it in the way Xavier refused to look at him.

In the way he handled him.

In the way his movements were a little too controlled.

As Xavier finished dressing him, he took a step back, fists clenching at his sides.

His expression was unreadable, but his body language screamed discomfort.

Riven, now fully dressed, glanced down at himself.

Xavier had made sure he was presentable.

Why?

Then, it hit him.

"Ah... Soran."

Of course.

His master was coming back.

And Soran was possessive.

He wouldn’t like the idea of Riven being in Xavier’s clothes.

He wouldn’t like the idea of Riven looking like he belonged to someone else.

Xavier knew this.

And that was why he had gone through the trouble of washing Riven’s old clothes, ensuring that when Soran returned, there would be no evidence of the previous night.

No evidence of what had happened between them.

No evidence of the lines that had almost been crossed.

Riven’s smirk slowly returned.

"He’s trying to erase it."

But that was the thing about desire, about instincts.

They could not be erased.

Not that easily.

He got all of this even though Xavier did not utter a single word. Riven felt proud of himself, he was a smart little wolf, wasn’t he? His tail flicked with satisfaction.

Xavier stepped back toward the cell door, his grip tight around the keys.

Still, he did not speak.

Riven remained seated, watching.

Taking in the way Xavier’s body language screamed restraint.

How he seemed almost afraid to linger any longer.

As if one more second in Riven’s presence would be too much.

The silence stretched between them, thick and unrelenting.

And then, finally—

Xavier turned, stepping out of the cell.

The door clicked shut behind him. This barrier did not seem to only separate them physically but mentally and emotionally as well.
