Chapter 41: The Hunt

Eli decided to just shut up and support this poor wolf who was abandoned, he knew the dark side of this world, he was a healer in many noble houses. They would take in male mistresses and ill-treat them... It almost happened to him... His ears immediately drooped at the thought.

Now this poor wolf was going through it too, he was a kind wolf, naive maybe, but kind! He should warn him!

If he hadn’t sniffed Riven and confirmed for himself, he would have assumed that the Alpha had roughed him so badly that he was bleeding. The thought made him shudder... He respected the Alpha but if he really did that... He just could not imagine.

"But you are not fine... You just said—" Eli tried to console Riven but he was cut off.

Riven ignored him, fists clenched. "I don’t care what he does now. I will not talk to him. He can crawl back and beg, and I won’t forgive him."

Elliot had a feeling that wasn’t true, but he knew better than to argue.

Instead, he hesitantly offered, "Do you... Want some tea?"

Riven let out a long, slow breath. "Yes. Yes, I do."

Elliot rushed to prepare it.

As he did, he stole glances at Riven, still trying to process everything.

The wolf had periods.

The alpha had abandoned him.

And now, Elliot was somehow caught in the middle of this.

The third day arrived, and with it came the long-awaited end of Riven’s miserable predicament. His periods had finally stopped. Finally. He could almost cry tears of joy.

Usually it would last for at least four to five days, but he did not question the logic. He was just glad it was over.

Throughout his suffering, Eli had been the one tending to him, dutifully bringing herbs and fussing over him like a mother hen.

Riven had milked that sympathy for all it was worth—just enough to keep Eli close, but not so much that he would suspect Riven was dramatically exaggerating his pain at times. It wasn’t entirely a lie... Just a strategic use of the truth.

Ronan, on the other hand, had been conspicuously absent. That bastard! He had only come to visit at night, when Riven was asleep, and never while he was awake. Coward!

But today, all of that didn’t matter. Today was the day of the hunting expedition.

All the young alphas, and betas... And one omega had gathered at the edge of the dense forest surrounding the wolf clan’s main territory.

The towering trees stretched into the sky, their dark green canopies casting long shadows over the dirt path that wound into the wilderness. The air was thick with the scent of earth, and moss.

This was not just a simple hunting trip—this was an important resource hunting expedition. The wolf clan’s main industry revolved around mining, and these expeditions served a dual purpose: to find fresh veins of precious metals and gemstones while simultaneously keeping the local wildlife in check.

If they found a valuable resource, they would mark it and would later send an excavation team. If they found something alive... Well, the hunting part of the expedition would take care of that.

Riven, despite his personal grievances, was joining. He wasn’t about to sit around and mope just because Ronan had been avoiding him. No way! He would enjoy himself on this hunt, and if he just so happened to have too much fun while Ronan had to watch from a distance, well... That was just a coincidence.

When the teams were assigned, Riven quickly latched onto Raphael before anyone else could take him.

"You and me, Raphael," Riven smirked, linking arms with him. "I promise I’ll protect you."

Raphael snorted, his golden eyes glinting with amusement. "Oh? I thought I’d be the one protecting you."

"Nah, I’m so much stronger than you," Riven said with mock arrogance, flipping his black hair dramatically. "My wolf blood is just that powerful."

"But you are only half wolf," Raphael smirked. He did not mean it in a mocking way, Riven understood that, it was simply banter.

"Shh." Riven placed a finger over Raphael’s lips, ignoring that completely valid point. "Don’t ruin my moment."

Elsewhere, Victor and Ambrose had paired up—unsurprising, given that they were childhood friends and trained together often. A few other female alphas had teamed up as well, leaving only one person without a partner...

Ronan.

Of course, Ronan, the all-powerful Alpha, didn’t need a teammate. He stood slightly apart from the group, his tall, imposing figure clad in a sleek black hunting outfit. His long white hair was tied back loosely, and his icy blue eyes were focused on the forest ahead, not on the petty dramatics happening behind him.

At least, that’s what it looked like.

Riven could feel Ronan’s gaze flicker toward him a few times, watching—probably noticing the way he had immediately teamed up with Raphael and was deliberately ignoring him.

Good. Let him watch.

Ronan gave the instructions, his voice cool and authoritative. "We’ll be searching the southern side of the territory. If you find a resource, mark it. If you come across dangerous wildlife, eliminate it. Stay in your teams and don’t wander off."

He paused, then glanced around the group. His gaze landed on Riven for a fraction of a second before shifting away.

"...Move out."

Riven scowled. THAT’S IT?! That bastard! Not even a glance of concern? Not a single sign of guilt? Nothing?!

His rage burned hotter.

Fine. FINE. He would just have the time of his life without Ronan.

There was really no point in staying here, Riven thought. If he stayed, it would be the constant melodrama of push and pull. Ronan coming to him to fuck him and then abandoning him.

He was here for a good time, and he was definitely not going to waste his time spending on this "can’t make up his damn mind" Alpha.

Besides, he did not want to stay here any longer, he would be killed off-screen, a while before the main story started and he did not know when that would happen. He did not intend to stay and find out.
