Chapter 334: Is Your Lipstick Kissproof?
The sun peeked through the horizon, dyeing the sky in the hues of gold, amber and violet. Lariette and Ruediger lay tangled under the blanket, keeping the cold at bay by sharing warmth.
Ruediger was the first to stir. Seeing that the clock had turned six, he smiled at the sleeping Lariette. As usual, he brushed his lips over her face.
"Wake up, my dear sleepyhead."
Once Ruediger’s soft kisses awakened her, Lariette stretched, letting out a small hum. Rubbing her drowsy eyes, she asked sleepily, "Mmm... we’re going to the cafe, right?"
"Yup," Ruediger replied, voice still thick with sleep, "Come on. Go and get ready."
Lariette chuckled as she slipped out of bed, heading to the washroom. Ruediger made the bed before going to his bedroom. Recalling what he hadn’t done last night, he stripped the sheet off the mattress, ready to do laundry.
At half-past six, Ruediger returned to Lariette’s bedroom. He was dressed in a simple sweater, a coat and dark jeans, his hair tied into a low ponytail and draped over one shoulder.
Leaning against the frame of the walk-in wardrobe, Ruediger watched Lariette sitting before the vanity mirror, applying her skincare and doing her makeup.
"Want me to braid your hair?"
Lariette blinked, then turned at Ruediger, only realizing he had returned. Smiling, she nodded, "Yes~"
Ruediger approached Lariette, standing behind her as she put the finishing touches on her makeup. Grabbing the brush, he gathered her hair.
"How many times did you practice on Maddie before?" Lariette chuckled, recalling Ruediger’s story about learning to style hair because of the young Madeline.
"More than I can count," Ruediger smiled.
Working with quiet focus, he weaved the strands into a clean, neat braid down her back. When he finished, he took a tiny box from the drawer, one of her favorite tiny hair clips.
Ruediger adorned Lariette’s hair with little tulip clips. She smilingly watched his reflection as he fastened the clips along the braid.
"You know? One of my students asked if I was a flower fairy when I wore these clips before."
Narrowing his eyes, Ruediger scoffed, "A male student? Did he try to flirt with you?"
"He’s so young. Don’t get jealous over a boy," Lariette chuckled, then she shuddered when Ruediger suddenly pressed a kiss just behind her ear.
"You’re dangerously enchanting, my love."
Lariette smiled in helplessness, turning to face Ruediger, the braid swaying gently. Cupping his face, she said teasingly, "Only for you."
This man was such a fool in love. She was rarely praised for her beauty. Only he thought she was dangerously captivating.
Ruediger arched his brows, his eyes gazing at Lariette’s lips, painted in the hues of blush rose. Then, he asked, "Is your lipstick kissproof?"
"What kind of question is that?"
Without answering her, he dipped his head and kissed her. It started soft, just a brush then the restraint faded when she leaned in more, fingers curling into his shirt.
His lips claimed hers in a kiss that was anything but careful.
When Ruediger finally released Lariette, breathless, he blinked before laughing softly.
"Well? Do I get your lipstick on me?"
Lariette whose cheeks flushed, tapped Ruediger’s lower lip with her finger, "Just a little smudge. Eddy, I think my lipstick color looks great on you."
Ruediger chuckled, "I’ll take it as a compliment."
Not long after, with fingers laced, the pair left the apartment. Walking down the familiar streets, they were among the rare ones not in a hurry.
"Already think of what you want this morning?" Ruediger glanced at Lariette, smiling as she tucked herself a little closer due to the cold autumn breeze.
"I think I’ll get butternut squash soup and some bread," Lariette chirped, then she added, "And maybe some roasted barley tea."
"Those sound good enough," Ruediger nodded in approval.
The clock hadn’t even struck seven by the time they reached the usual cafe. Once the pair stepped inside the cafe, the warmth and scent of freshly baked pastries welcomed them.
At this hour, most patrons just got some packed food and drinks before resuming their journeys.
Lariette went to a table for two by the window while Ruediger headed to the counter to place their orders. She smilingly watched him, thinking he looked lighter and happier this morning.
This was great. Hopefully, the day would end well for both of them.
After breakfast, Lariette and Ruediger stepped outside again, the street now bathed in autumn sunlight. She tugged her coat slightly as they walked toward the school.
A light breeze rustled the yellowing trees. Ruediger brushed a leaf from Lariette’s shoulder, then they exchanged sweet smiles.
"Eddy, O’ School Valedictorian, do you ever miss being a student?"
Lariette’s question amused Ruediger. Tilting his head, he considered for a moment before answering, "I think only the part where you could nap because teachers were away."
Lariette laughed, "Hehe, I miss the naps too. And I think my students love it when I leave them for self-study sessions."
As they chatted, the pair reached the school gates. Some of them were already arriving, whether on foot, on bicycles or dropped off by their parents.
A few waved and called out to Lariette. She waved back, then turned to Ruediger, expression warm and bright.
"Thanks for walking me. See you later, Eddy."
"Wouldn’t let you go alone," Ruediger shrugged, a smirk tugging on his lips, "You look too pretty to be unguarded."
"Such a smooth talker," Lariette teased. She held back from rising on her toes to kiss Ruediger more, aware of where they were, "Go now. Don’t you have work to do too?"
"Yeah, I do have to work to get money for my wife. Go, teacher," Ruediger lightly tapped Lariette’s back, "Inspire young minds, won’t you?"
Tucking her hair behind her ear, Lariette smiled and gave Ruediger one last look. She turned around and hurried inside, her steps nimbled on the ground.
Ruediger lingered for a moment, watching Lariette head to the main building. Then, he walked back into the golden light of the late autumn morning, his heart warm and full.
Unfortunately, he returned home to learn something annoying.
Indeed, Vincent sent countless letters and he even told Mr. Hayes, the apartment manager, to inform him when he returned from the north.
