Chapter 333: What Am I? A Baby?
The tears had slowed and the silence between them was no longer heavy. Instead, it was filled with quiet understanding as their hearts beat close, the rhythm faint.
Lariette still rested her chin atop Ruediger’s head, her arms wrapped securely around him. She could tell his eyes were closed while she gazed at the wall beyond his shoulders.
With every breath he took, the warmth brushed her skin. To her relief, his breathing no longer labored, telling her that the turmoil within him had calmed.
"Eddy, thank you for telling me," Lariette murmured, her fingers brushing through his soft, damp locks, "And thank you for trusting me."
Opening his eyes, Ruediger smiled faintly. He tilted his chin, looking at Lariette whose gaze seemed to anchor him to be here and now instead of losing himself in the ocean of his grief.
"I was worried... you’d despise me once you knew," Ruediger admitted, his voice still hoarse, "But you do not. And... despite it still hurts, I feel lighter."
Lariette lowered her head, brushing her nose along Ruediger’s, "How could I despise you, Eddy? You didn’t ask for it. Your mother didn’t ask for it either. The ones to blame are those men."
Lariette noticed Ruediger didn’t tell her much about his kidnapping, but she had no intention to ask. Just opening up about the incident costing his mother’s life alone was enough to break him.
Perhaps he would tell her some other time. Perhaps he wouldn’t ever.
Ruediger let Lariette kiss his face again. Then, there was a small, grateful smile playing at the corners of his lips.
Fragile, but relieved.
"Thank you, Lettie. I... I don’t know what else to say... I can only thank you."
"The pleasure is mine, Eddy, dear," she said gently, "I won’t push you to talk if you’re reluctant, but please know that I’m all ears for you whenever you want to share anything."
Ruediger’s throat tightened again, but this time not out of pain. Rather, it was peace. He reached for Lariette’s hand and brought it to his lips, kissing her knuckles one by one.
"Thank you, Lettie," he chanted the same words, carrying the weight of his gratitude.
In this moment, lying beside his beloved who held his pain without fear, he allowed relief to wash over his heart.
Lariette kept Ruediger in her embrace. Then, her eyes drifted to the clock hanging on the wall. It hadn’t hit midnight yet, but it was better if they cleaned up now and got ready for bed soon.
As much as she wanted to stay lazily in bed, she still remembered work day would resume tomorrow. She disliked going to sleep without washing up after such heated activities.
"Eddy, wait here for a sec."
Lariette slipped out of the bed without further explanation. Ruediger watched through half-lidded eyes, his hand still resting over where her waist had been.
"Washroom, Lettie?" Ruediger murmured, his eyes caught the full view of Lariette’s slender figure, still bare from any piece of clothing.
Stepping barefoot on the floor, Lariette giggled softly. She picked up Ruediger’s pajama shirt instead of her nightgown, the one he tossed away hours earlier.
Lariette shrugged the shirt over her figure. The loose fabric hung just above her milky thighs, the sleeves falling long past her hands.
"I gonna prepare a bath for you," Lariette said while bundling her hair into a high bun, "We need to clean up before bed."
"A bath?" Ruediger raised a brow, amused. He slowly sat up, the blanket pooling over his tapered waist, "Lettie, what am I? A baby?"
Glancing at him over her shoulder, Lariette chuckled, mischief glinting in her eyes, "A tired baby who needs his muscles soothed."
Ruediger laughed in helplessness. Before he could say anything, Lariette pointed a finger playfully, "Just wait. No peeking, okay?"
"Haha... okay."
Lariette quickly disappeared into the washroom. Soon, the sound of water filling the tub drifted through the open door, mingled with the faint scent of lavender bath salts from one of Ruediger’s collections.
Sighing, he leaned back against the headboard, sensing more warmth spreading from his chest. The fear that clung to his heart in the beginning faded. He was thankful for his choice to share the story, albeit partially, with her.
"Eddy~ Come in! The water’s perfect!"
She called, poking her head out from behind the door. He quickly left the bed.
"Coming!"
Ruediger joined Lariette in the bathroom, now filled with steam curling softly in the air. She was already under the rainfall shower in the glass cubicle, his pajama shirt hanging at the rack.
Without another word, Ruediger stepped in, taking a place before Lariette. They rinsed quietly together, exchanging gentle touches and brief kisses of quiet affection.
"Eddy, get in the tub," Lariette nudged Ruediger from the back once they left the shower cubicle, hot water dripping from their shoulders.
Ruediger simply followed Lariette’s words. She settled behind him, her hands sliding up his broad back, feeling the firmness of his muscles.
"Let me give you a massage this time," Lariette said, pressing her thumbs into Ruediger’s shoulders.
"Oh?" Ruediger smirked, glancing behind one shoulder, "Are you pampering me, Lettie? Remind me to tip generously."
"Hehe, you’d better."
The pair laughed softly together. Then, she worked slowly, her small hands kneading the knots in his shoulders. He leaned back into her touch, allowing the moment to wrap around them like a cocoon of comfort.
"Lettie, crave anything tomorrow?" Ruediger asked, earning laughter from Lariette. He felt her kissing the nape of his neck.
"Already thinking of what to cook, en? Well, how about we go to the cafe? You don’t have to wake up early to make breakfast."
"Alright. Let’s do that," Ruediger smiled, "We didn’t get to go there last week."
Lariette hummed softly, agreeing with Ruediger. She appreciated his diligence but still hoped to pamper him more.
When the water began to cool, the pair stepped out and dried off together. Lariette slipped back into Ruediger’s pajama shirt instead of her nightgown. As for him, he tugged on fresh ones.
"Let’s just sleep in your room tonight, Lettie," Ruediger pulled Lariette by the waist, a grin tugging on his lips, "Ahem, we made too much mess. I better change the sheet."
Lariette blushed, "...okay."
Later, curled up under a pink comforter, they drifted into sleep. There were no nightmares this time, just the hush of two hearts resonating with one another.
