Chapter 57: Ambush
Chapter 57: Ambush
After some time, all the carriages were securely tied together, and the wheat was loaded inside. Once everything was ready, Huang Bei, who was coordinating at the front, spoke up.
"Old Chen, everything’s done. We can start moving now."
Chen Li, manning the lead carriage, raised his voice so everyone could hear.
"All right, let’s go! Let’s all hope for a safe journey."
The twin brothers, Yan Li and Yan Hao, took charge of the second carriage, while Huang Bei handled the one Feng was riding on.
Before taking the reins, he turned to Feng, his sharp gaze drilling into him as he spoke calmly.
"Listen, I hope you don’t try anything funny. Old Chen is a good man, and I’d protect him with my life if I had to."
With that, Huang Bei snapped the reins, setting the carriage in motion.
The golden wheat fields rushed past, painting a breathtaking view.
"Don’t worry. I’m not the kind of person who bites the hand that feeds them," Feng replied, his eyes fixed on the distant horizon. The sun’s glare bathed the land in a warm, golden glow.
"I hope so," Huang Bei snorted, choosing to remain silent afterward as the carriages steadily moved toward their destination.
After about two hours of travel, they began ascending the mountain.
The well-worn dirt path gradually turned steeper, winding its way through rugged terrain.
As the elevation increased, the air grew noticeably colder, carrying the crisp scent of pine and earth.
The golden wheat fields in the distance gave way to towering trees, their once-green leaves now tinged with silver.
Icy winds howled through the mountain pass, slipping through gaps in the carriages and chilling the travelers to the bone.
Yet, despite the biting cold, the sun still shone high above, casting a golden light over the landscape.
It was a strange contrast—the warmth of the sun against the sharp sting of the wind, as if the mountain itself couldn’t decide between seasons.
Feng started feeling a bit cold himself, watching as small bits of frost slowly formed along the edges of the carriage wheels.
The horses huffed, their breath visible in the cold air.
Despite the drop in temperature, the climb continued steadily, the carriages creaking with each turn of the wheels.
Looking around, Feng noticed how the scenery was changing.
The trees here weren’t like the ones in the Blackwood Forest.
Their bark gleamed with a faint silvery sheen, and some of them even radiated traces of spiritual energy.
It was a sight both unfamiliar and mesmerizing, a quiet reminder that he was stepping into a world far different from the one he had always known.
"How is it possible for it to be both cold and warm at the same time here?" Feng muttered, voicing his confusion.
Having spent most of his life in the Blackwood Forest, he had never encountered such a strange phenomenon.
Surprisingly, Huang Bei responded.
"That’s what makes Silverpine City special. Since it’s high up in the mountains, the climate is always chillier than in other cities.
The elevation makes it harder to reach, so trade can be a problem sometimes. As for why it feels both warm and cold... even I don’t know."
Feng watched the trees pass by, their green foliage gradually shifting to silvery hues.
Even though he had heard of Silverpine Trees before, seeing them in person still made him gasp.
More importantly, some of the trees emitted faint traces of spiritual energy, giving them an almost magical presence.
I wonder if I can harvest some Silverpine Cones for myself... Feng’s eyes gleamed with anticipation as he studied the trees.
From what he had learned, when a Silverpine Tree was about to blossom and produce cones, it would release increasingly strong waves of spiritual energy.
Once it reached a saturation point, the Silverpine Cones would simply fall to the ground.
When Huang Bei saw the look in Feng’s eyes as he stared at the Silverpine Trees, he spoke up again. "If you try anything, your head will fly off your shoulders—assuming I don’t get to you first."
Feng shivered at the warning and glanced at Huang Bei, who remained focused on steering the carriage.
After thinking for a moment, he responded with gratitude.
"Thank you. I don’t really know the dos and don’ts of this place, so I appreciate the warning."
He pushed aside any thoughts of trying to collect Silverpine Cones on his own.
If I want to see what’s so special about them. I can just buy some in the city, Feng thought, excitement building inside him.
He was finally going to see his first city.
While it wasn’t as large as Brightshore from what he had heard, it was still a milestone worth noting.
But, of course, things were never that simple.
From the front, Chen Lin’s voice suddenly rang out, strained as he tried to sound calm.
"Hey, what do you want? Don’t you know who I am? I’m from the Chen Family!"
Despite his attempt at confidence, his voice cracked with nervousness.
A cold, malicious voice responded. "That’s exactly why we’re here, isn’t it? Robbing someone from a high-standing clan like yours is bound to be profitable."
The moment Feng heard that voice, his eyes narrowed, and a sharp killing intent spread from his body.
I guess some people really don’t want to live anymore, he thought as he stood and stepped out of the carriage.
But before he could act, Huang Bei moved even faster, already sprinting toward the front as he shouted, "Yan Hao! Yan Li! Stay behind and protect the carriage—take Old Chen with you!"
As he ran, his body began to change.
Horns sprouted from his head, and his frame thickened, resembling a towering minotaur.
A powerful surge of spiritual energy exploded from him, pressing down on the surroundings like a raging storm.
"Oh? So you were also here Huang Bei!" one of the bandits spoke in a mocking tone.
He was a muscular man with a powerful aura, standing out from the rest—not bothering to hide his face behind cloth wraps like the others.
Unlike the usual lowly thieves, he was openly confronting them, exuding confidence.
The moment Huang Bei saw him, his expression darkened with fury.
He gritted his teeth, his voice laced with rage.
"Yi Bei, you bastard! How dare you show your face here after betraying the old man!"
Feng, standing behind the last carriage, narrowed his eyes as he took in the situation. He chose to observe first, assessing their enemies.
There were six bandits in total.
Yi Bei, the one Huang Bei had called out, was at the 8th level of Qi Condensation—just like Huang Bei.
The five others, standing behind him, had already begun spreading out to encircle them.
Most of them were at the 6th level of Qi Condensation, but one of them was at the 7th level, their spiritual energy fluctuating as they prepared for battle.
The tension in the air thickened.
