Chapter 98: Is the money ready
Suddenly, the sound of Mary’s voice came from the doorway.
"Uncle, Auntie, is the money ready?"
She walked in afterward. Upon seeing Cecilia and Emma, she barely glanced at them before heading toward Elena.
She had important business to attend to today, not having the time to argue with these two country bumpkins.
Elena took out a few cards and handed them to Mary.
"Here’s three million."
Before she finished speaking, Mary raised her voice.
"Three million?! Are you trying to dismiss a beggar with such a small amount?!"
Cecilia frowned; Mary’s tone was really unpleasant. Did Elena need to have a lot of money just to give it to her?
"If Great-aunt is willing to give you money, you should be grateful. If you think it’s too little, then go earn it yourself."
Mary arrogantly replied to Cecilia, "Of course, I need to earn the money myself, and I also plan to take some money for them to earn more. I’m not like you, who only knows how to sweet talk to get money."
Elena quickly explained, "Mary received a big project involving an investment of thirty million. It can break even in a month and earn half of our capital back in six months. The family business is running a bit tight now, so we’re looking to earn some extra income to ease the situation."
Cecilia frowned and asked, "What project?"
Elena brushed her bangs and boasted, "Do you know the Anderson family? The one well-connected with the government? Their heiress, Mona Brut, is launching a government-monopoly cosmetics project. I happen to have a connection with her and managed to secure a small stake. It only requires thirty million to invest."
Cecilia snorted.
Of course, she knew the Anderson family—it was the family of John Brut’s wife, after all.
However... a government monopoly on cosmetics? That sounded ambitious. With the intense competition in cosmetics worldwide, the government’s involvement was minimal. Even if they did somehow monopolize it, disturbing so many interests would make the government hesitant to act rashly. Not to mention, given the quality of their products, they would likely face backlash before the product could even hit the market. Eventually, they would have to declare bankruptcy.
Elena and her family had been in business for so many years, so there was no way they didn’t see this project for what it was. It was probably a desperate move.
She couldn’t just stand by and watch Elena dive into a pitfall.
Mary continued to complain, "Didn’t I mention it requires thirty million to get in? Your three million doesn’t even qualify. You need to figure something out! After all, I’m trying to save you!"
Cecilia spoke up, "No need; I’ll earn the money for Great-aunt."
It seemed no matter what she said, Elena wouldn’t want to use her money. In that case, she will have to find a different approach that they might accept more easily.
She took Elena’s bank card and looked at her before saying, "Great-aunt, if you put your trust in me and give me this money, I’ll make sure to double it for you."
Elena thought for a moment. Since Mary’s way wasn’t feasible, and they only had so much money at home, she might as well give it to Cecilia. Considering the costs they had spent after purchasing the medicine as well as the lifetime of hard work they had done for the company, perhaps it was time to take a break.
She nodded. "Alright."
Seeing that Elena was more willing to trust Cecilia than ask for her help, Mary turned and left angrily.
"You will regret this!"
Who would have expected that by the early morning of the next day, Mary would return to Elena’s home?
She looked at Elena impatiently and said, "I talked to Mona. She said three million is fine, but you will have to mortgage this house to her."
Elena refused. "If I have to give you the money, then so be it. However, you can’t have the house."
For their old age, this was the only secure place for them. If the investment didn’t work out, at their age, were they supposed to live on the streets?
Mary insisted, "You’re being too stubborn. Who am I doing this for? Isn’t it for the company and for you?!"
"If you want to turn things around, hand over the house title to me quickly!"
"There will be no need for that!"
