Chapter 84: Confidence

Ethan had never wanted to be at this kind of event in the first place. When he saw a nametag with his name at the door, he didn’t pay any attention and simply strode in. After all, no one would dare to stop him.

Initially, Richard was rather cautious after seeing Ethan’s confidence. But when he noticed Ethan didn’t even have a nametag on his chest, he started to act more recklessly.

He mocked, "Who are you? You don’t even have a nametag, so how did you get in here?"

Selina chimed in, "Maybe you crawled in through a dog hole?"

With that, she shouted, "Security! Security!"

Hearing the commotion, the security guard quickly rushed in to see what was going on.

"Miss Selina, what happened?"

She pointed at Ethan, speaking in a harsh tone.

"How are you people doing your jobs? You’re letting people without nametags in?!"

The security guard broke into a cold sweat, knowing well of her infamous attitude at school.

He turned to Ethan, sweating even more.

On the other hand, Ethan just quietly stared at the security guard. The latter swallowed hard and weakly called out.

"Mas... Master Lawrence."

At those words, Richard was momentarily stunned.

Selina was still shouting, "I told you to kick him out! What are you doing?!"

Richard quickly pulled her back before he carefully asked the security guard, "You called him Master Lawrence? As in, the heir of the Lawrence family, the richest in Star City?"

Hearing this, Selina was also taken aback.

Who in Star City didn’t know about the Lawrence family and especially Steven Lawrence?

Offending him was akin to asking for a disaster.

Ethan raised an eyebrow. "Yes, and?"

Richard, feeling like he had nearly made a grave mistake because of Selina, hurriedly shoved her aside and stepped forward toward Ethan.

He spoke up with a flattering smile, "Master Steven, I’m sorry I didn’t recognize you earlier.

Please accept my apologies. I hope you won’t take it to heart."

Ethan snorted coldly.

"The person you should be apologizing to is this young lady."

He gave Diana a glance. Richard forced a smile, preparing to apologize to Diana.

"Also, I’m not my brother; I’m his younger brother, Ethan!"

Richard’s apology got stuck in his throat. His expression turned dark, feeling like he had been fooled.

Selina saw his expression beside him, not knowing whether to laugh or feel bad for him.

She scoffed.

"So, it’s just the second young master after all."

Everyone in Star City knew that despite Steven’s vast empire, Ethan was only given a small hotel. Outsiders didn’t know why Steven had done so, but from the perspective of family interest, the way he treated Ethan seemed more wary and indifferent than loving.

Therefore, many influential families assumed that offending Ethan was worlds apart from offending Steven.

When Richard looked at Ethan again, any hint of his previous flattery was replaced by disdain.

"It’s a fact she doesn’t have a partner. Why should I apologize?"

"You can be her duet partner, but as far as I know, the second young master of the Lawrence family doesn’t know a thing about music."

Then, he directed his words at Diana.

"You’re letting someone clueless about music be your partner, Diana? Aren’t you afraid of making a fool of yourself?"

Diana’s face turned pale before flushing a deep red. It wasn’t that she was truly embarrassed, but rather she was upset and helpless that Cecilia and Ethan were getting mocked because of her.

Selina scoffed, "The assessment is about to start. I think you should just give up!"

Diana lowered her head, glancing at Cecilia before she softly said, "Cecilia, I won’t be able to participate this year since I don’t have a partner...I’ll try again next year..."

Cecilia sighed. She thought Ethan could actually save the day based on his confidence earlier, but he was only showing off.

She checked her watch.

"Who said you don’t have a partner? I’ll be your partner."

Just as she said that, the venue’s announcement system chimed in.

"The graduation assessment is about to begin..."

Diana thought Cecilia was just trying to comfort her. Just as she was about to refuse, Cecilia pulled her onto the stage.

The assessment rules stated there was no particular order to who played first—whoever was ready could go.

Just as they reached the piano, Selina and Richard deliberately shoved them aside.

With a condescending look, Selina remarked, "You two should just step back. We don’t want the guests to run away after the first piece."

After that, she and Richard began their performance.

Their performance was flawless. Richard’s play was strong, while Selina’s was sharp.

However, the two didn’t seem to be collaborating; rather, they seemed to be showcasing their individual strengths.

Anyone who wasn’t an expert in piano wouldn’t be able to notice it. Thus, when their performance ended, thunderous applause erupted from the audience.

As they stepped down, they intentionally bumped Diana on the shoulder.

Now, it was Diana’s turn. Cecilia sat next to her, ready to accompany her performance. Diana looked at Cecilia with hesitation, but she was met with a determined gaze.

Suddenly, she felt a surge of confidence.

As the first note played, everyone was drawn in.

The melody flowed out—it was sometimes fast, sometimes slow, while Cecilia’s support brought the piece to a divine level.

When they finished, not only was Diana surprised, but the guests below were so stunned that they forgot to applaud.

Three seconds later, prolonged and continuous applause finally erupted from the crowd, lasting for a good five to six minutes.

Selina was infuriated when she saw so many people clapping. On the other hand, Richard was too shocked to speak.

While the audience was still immersed in the stunning performance, a sudden exclamation came from the door.

"Rainy?!"
