Chapter 95: Battle in the depths of ’Thousand Mountain Forest’
"I’ve already told you everything. Please don’t kill me," pleaded the robber from the Red Fire Gang, continuing to beg in front of Apollo.
Apollo pondered what to do with him, ultimately deciding to spare him for the time being and allow this man to spy on the Red Fire Gang, providing crucial intelligence on their movements.
Once again, Apollo swiftly infused his life force into the man’s body, this time more efficiently due to his growing experience.
"Alright, you can live. But you must perform your tasks correctly. Regarding the skirmish, report that your group was attacked by ferocious beasts, and you survived through luck."
With two spies—one in the Saber Tiger Gang and the other in the Red Fire Gang—Apollo could be quickly informed of any movements made by the gangs.
"Leave!" He quickly ordered, gesturing for him to depart. Reid kept his distance throughout, preferring not to overhear their conversation, knowing that sometimes ignorance was the wisest choice.
After sending them away, they shifted their location slightly, anticipating that the battle might attract other creatures or frighten them away. They moved a bit farther and waited for the Earth Bison.
As time passed quickly and the sunset, an eerie and unknown darkness enveloped the entire Thousand Mountain Forest. Strange and terrifying roars of unimaginable beasts echoed throughout the forest.
"We have to be careful at night; the Thousand Mountain truly shows how dangerous and mysterious this forest can be," Reid remarked as darkness fell over the landscape.
He had witnessed Apollo’s strength and understood what he was capable of, yet countless strong warriors had perished in these woods due to either carelessness or encountering something unimaginable.
Apollo nodded in agreement, sensing the shift in the forest’s atmosphere. He could feel the agitation in the elemental particles of the air—a heavy and oppressive feeling settling over the vast, unimaginable forest.
The forest grew even weirder and more mysterious, with a noticeable increase in the activity of powerful beasts. However, Apollo refrained from hunting them, knowing the dangers of nighttime and being mindful of his companion’s safety. He couldn’t risk Reid’s life for a thrill, especially since he was the one who had brought him here in the first place.
But trouble found them nonetheless, as sensitive beasts caught their scent and came looking for a nighttime meal.
They were a small pack of ferocious giant saber wolves, each as large as a lion, with sharp claws and jaws capable of tearing any flesh and bones.
"It looks like we’re going to eat roasted wolves tonight."
Apollo then jumped as five giant, terrifying wolves attacked him. One of them seemed to have broken its genetic limit, becoming a ’beast soldier’ equivalent to a human first-rank limit-breaker.
It was also this beast that was able to smell them, or more specifically, Reid, who, despite using various plants and herbs, couldn’t deceive the giant wolf beast soldier’s senses.
Apollo, on the other hand, had maintained his body temperature exceptionally low, so not only his scent but also his almost non-existent heat signature made most beasts consider him dead or unnoticeable.
He attacked the leader, the beast soldier wolf, as it was the most dangerous. Taking care of the strongest would make the other giant saber wolves afraid.
Apollo’s movements were so swift that, except for the giant wolf, the other wolves didn’t even react to his speed.
The powerful leader wolf, although the biggest, was also the fastest. It tried to counterattack Apollo but missed, allowing Apollo to land a strike on its impenetrable fur and skin.
Despite having sliced through the thick hides of many beasts, which were sturdier than metal, Apollo failed to deal a deadly blow this time, leaving only a shallow wound on the leader wolf’s body, surprising him a little.
But he didn’t feel anxious. Instead, he felt excitement as his sword swings became faster and fiercer, wounding the giant wolf with multiple cuts all over its skin.
Other wolves attacked occasionally, but he was even faster than the beast soldier wolf. How could these weaker wolves catch him? During the skirmish, he severed and killed two of the four weaker wolves.
The beast soldier giant wolf, now injured and with bloody eyes full of a ferocious aura, stared at him. Both sides knew the battle wouldn’t end quickly.
Apollo was genuinely surprised, as this was his first time fighting a beast soldier, and not just any ordinary beast soldier at that. Many ordinary second-rank limit-breakers might find it difficult to kill the giant wolf-beast soldier ahead.
He knew that wild, ferocious beasts were stronger than humans or most races in the world of Rion, but now he truly believes it after witnessing this.
The limits of beasts are much stronger than those of most humans, so when they break through, they become significantly more powerful. Their physique is completely off-the-charts compared to humans.
If it weren’t for the wisdom that allowed humans to create skills and items, it would be very difficult to defeat these ferocious beasts.
Although the beast was strong, it wouldn’t be too difficult for him to kill it if he used his life force and other skills. However, it was challenging to kill it with just his current swordsmanship. Unless he mastered sword aura, their battle could go on for hours.
The beast seemed to understand as well; after becoming a beast soldier, it had grown slightly smarter. It growled at the other two surviving wolf beasts as if conveying something, and then they fled.
Apollo remained standing, choosing not to pursue them. It didn’t make sense to chase the beasts into the darkness of the forest, which was filled with unknown dangers.
Reid quickly joined him, wearing a slightly confused expression as he pondered something.
"What’s the matter? You look a bit anxious," Apollo asked, noticing Reid’s deep contemplation.
"Something isn’t right. Such strong beasts don’t usually roam this area," Reid replied, sounding concerned. "If monsters this powerful and aggressive were here before, my grandfather and I would have known."
"There must be a reason they’ve moved to different areas," Reid continued, his voice troubled.
"Oh, is that a problem?" Apollo inquired, curious about the significance of this change.
"Sir, this changes everything. The forest is home to countless beasts, including some that are catastrophically stronger."
"If something has forced these beasts to change their hunting grounds, it means an immensely powerful beast has made a move. This shift in territory will likely lead to chaos among the beasts, increasing the dangers dramatically in this part of the Thousand Mountain region."
"We won’t know what kind of beast might attack us next time."
Hearing this, Apollo understood the seriousness of the situation: countless unknown and powerful monster beasts might now be roaming the area, having been forced from their previous hunting grounds.
"Awwuu! Awuuu!"
Suddenly, they heard the loud cry of wolves, likely the same ones that had fled earlier.
"Let’s move. We shouldn’t stay here," Apollo urged.
Apollo and Reid quickly departed. Moments after they left, a small, dark, shadowy beast the size of a cat with lightning-fast speed pounced on the corpses of the wolf beasts. Its mouth stretched unnaturally large, and it devoured the entire body of a giant wolf beast, bigger than a lion, in a single bite.
Somewhere deep within the forest, a tiger-like beast with a blue crown and fur shimmering like white silver was locked in battle with another creature. This second beast had a tiger-like face but was covered in black wings and fur, adorned with striking red spots.
Their battle raged with catastrophic power, yet the strange forces of the Thousand Mountain Forest seemed to contain the destruction, preventing it from spreading beyond its bounds.
Grrr! Grrr!...
Both beasts were ferocious and unimaginably strong, their strength rivalling that of demi-gods. However, their fighting style was more brutal and direct.
Instead of using various laws or countless attacks, they fought with their bodies, which seemed to embody the laws themselves. Each of their movements contained the power of the law, capable of shattering space. But since they were in the deeper part of the Thousand Mountain Forest, all they could do was make the space around them tremble.
"Where is he? Where is my son?" The white tiger roared, attacking the dark-winged tiger with a fury fueled by rage and murderous intent.
"I don’t know! How many times have I told you that your son’s disappearance has nothing to do with me?" The dark-winged tiger retorted, fighting back with annoyance in his voice.
But just as they were about to fight more ferociously, a majestic voice echoed through the whole area.
"Stop! That’s enough."
A figure bathed in bright golden light appeared, its face and form obscured by a mysterious power that defied perception.
"We welcome the Majesty Ouroboros."
Both tigers immediately ceased fighting and bowed before the enigmatic figure.
"White Tiger, stop fighting. Your son is not with the Dark Wing. I have already sensed it. Your son is in the outer layer of the Thousand Mountain Forest."
