Chapter 86: The Tournament of Stars Begins
October 2.
Part of Loen City was in a state of euphoria as the Star Tournament finally began. This tournament is held to choose the five Star Knights who will represent the city’s generation of 18-year-olds, at least in name.
Today, the first day of the Tournament, the Battle Arena was full, and rockets could be heard throughout the city. All local TV stations broadcast this moment live.
Like all arenas worldwide, the Loen City Battle Arena is sponsored by the Global Awakening System. It can be used for simple tournaments or for individual competition in the Arena Rankings.
Today, and for the duration of the tournament, a significant portion would be reserved for the Tournament of Stars.
This arena is huge, and thanks to the System, many arenas can be combined into one and centralized to host one-on-one fights with the entire audience watching.
This large arena had a capacity for more than 100,000 people, but today it was completely full. And in the center of the arena, all the teams were waiting for the draw.
It soon began on the big screen above the arena, so everyone paid close attention.
Soon, the first matchup was announced:
Angelic Wave versus Hawk Fury.
"What luck." Steward smiled helplessly and looked at his boys. "It looks like we won’t be able to see how the other teams will use the seven, but we’ll be the ones to show them."
All of them seemed to have a certain tension about them, except for two.
Andrew and Elliot.
"I don’t think there will be a problem, Mr. Steward. We can win this without showing our hand." Elliot replied, and Andrew agreed.
"With the power we have, Hawk’s Fury won’t be a problem. We’ll watch them fight and try to learn how to coordinate better among the seven of us," Andrew added.
Steward smiled. "Good. Just remember that from now on, you’ll be facing the elite within your age groups in Loen City. It won’t be easy, so don’t underestimate your opponents."
Everyone nodded, though the tension was noticeable among the less experienced, Philip, and Andy. Rich and Chris were a little calmer, while Jenna stood behind Elliot, gripping the corner of his sleeve, clearly a little nervous.
Elliot couldn’t understand her nerves. If she had recently faced death many times, how could there be any nervousness in such a simple situation?
But he couldn’t say anything either.
Soon, the other draws were over.
The second match to be played would be the Elemental Academy versus Golden Eagle.
The third was the Clark Family versus The Cats, and to end the day, the fourth was the Ashle Family versus Broken Leaf.
-
With the draw over, everyone returned to their places.
They didn’t want to get into any fights.
"Angelic Wave, huh. So you have a Misfit in your ranks, hahaha. A once glorious guild, a breeding ground for such an important guild, how did you fall so low?" The Broken Leaf Guild Master approached.
At the same time, the Clark Group, led by Alexander Clark, also arrived.
"It looks like Angelic Wave won’t even make it to the finals this time. It’s a shame for the Second Star Knight. I’m sure he would have won back his place, but now I think they’re destined for defeat." It was Alexander who spoke this time.
Steward looked at the two of them and sneered.
"At least I don’t need other organizations to help us. I can still hire some Awakened ones, even if they’re weak."
His words seemed to strike a nerve inside both Masters, but they soon returned to normal.
"Hahaha, well, we have to give you credit for calling a Misfit an Awakened one. Even the System could punish you for that, you know?"
"I spend the Guild’s money for what it’s meant for, Master Leaf. Not on prostitutes, like someone else." Steward replied, then looked at the young members of both guilds. "At least I hope you are worthy of fighting and that you don’t use cheap tricks."
After that, he turned around and started to leave, but voices reached him before he could take five steps.
"Little Steward, how is it that you’ve hired a misfit? I don’t remember that being what you were taught during your days at the academy." This voice belonged to an elderly man with white hair, a white beard, and wrinkles on his face. He was strong, but he needed a cane to help him walk.
Next to him, another man spoke. "Master Roy, sometimes there’s just nothing you can do. Good Awakened ones are in short supply these days, so sometimes it’s normal to have to turn to other people who may have other attributes they’re good at. Isn’t that right, fellow Steward?" The one speaking was the Master of the Hawk Fury Guild.
His words sounded sincere, even that question at the end sounded so honest that he could fool anyone with his soft words.
Steward turned and frowned. ’So they’re aiming at us, huh.’ He smiled.
"Master Roy, it’s been a while since we last met." He greeted him respectfully, the man who had once been his teacher.
Then he spoke again. "But don’t be swayed by the words of these idiots. You should know better than I, since the days of the Academy, they were blind and couldn’t see the real talent before their eyes."
"You..."
Master Roy slammed his staff into the ground to silence those who planned to respond before him.
"So, he’s not a Misfit?" He looked at several of the Angelic members and focused his gaze on Elliot. "If I’m not mistaken, his name was Elliot Clark, known as the weakest among the Misfits, right?"
His gaze seemed to scrutinize Elliot, causing him to stare back intently. However, the old man then laughed a little.
"A Misfit who suddenly awakened still has the fame and reputation of a Misfit, no matter how far he goes. That will never be erased. I don’t think that’s right for your guild, little Steward."
Steward raised his eyebrows slightly, hearing something he didn’t expect to hear from the mouth of this wise and stubborn old man.
Suddenly, he seemed to sigh and looked at Elliot.
"In a world where power is everything and the strong rule, your words about a supposed reputation, Master Roy... are rubbish." He declared firmly, causing Master Roy to shudder slightly.
"You..."
But Steward spoke first.
"The strong decide where the weak’s minds go. It doesn’t matter if he was once a misfit, a prisoner, or the worst criminal. No one would dare say anything because he’s strong. Those were your words 40 years ago, Master Roy. Too bad some idiots have been sweet-talking your old ears with nonsense lately."
After those words, Steward looked at the Master of Fury of Hawk and sneered.
"Let your little ones speak in the arena. Mine have already told me they won’t talk to you, because words are heard louder when you’re up high."
Then he left with his team, leaving the scene in a deathly silence.
"...Let’s go." The Master of Hawk Fury looked at his contestants as they left the scene to prepare, and then the rest followed.
-
An hour later.
Without saying a word to each other, Angelic Wave and Hawk Fury took to the stage where they were to compete.
The stands were packed, and there was a lot of murmuring throughout the crowd.
However, nothing disturbed those in the arena; a protective barrier prevented anyone outside from sharing information with those inside.
Elliot didn’t recognize anyone among Hawk Fury’s people. However, he looked at them closely, recalling the information they had gathered earlier and reviewing the strategy to be employed.
The seven contestants stood in the arena. Andy, the Fire Magician Tank, stood at the front alongside Philips, the Fire Magician of Attack.
Elliot was to the right, and Jenna was to the left. Behind them were Chris and Rich, in a circle formation with Andrew in the center.
It was too simple a formation, so many underestimated them for that reason alone.
Although the members of Hawk Fury were in a hexagonal star formation, a little more polished than that of Angelic Wave, it was nothing to write home about.
A bell rang to signal the start of the battle, causing everyone to draw their weapons immediately.
Unknown swords—handed out by the guild—glowed in the hands of Elliot and Jenna.
Immediately, Hawk Fury made the first move. All seven moved forward at the same time, but at different speeds, managing to maintain the hexagonal star formation.
Elliot fixed his gaze on their movements.
"They want to fight head-on to take us out quickly, but they’re going to surround us slowly, thanks to that Control Mage they have," he said.
Andrew agreed. "Philip and Andy, when they’re 10 meters away from us, jump forward and face that Tank, both of you. When he activates his ability, don’t let us fall into it."
"Jenna and Elliot, take care of the spearmen. They rely on their strength and are on either side of you; they’ll come after you. Meanwhile, I’ll take care of that Control Mage." Andrew smiled and drew his weapon, a giant hammer, which he held with both hands.
"Chris and Rich just need to find blind spots to attack. Those swordsmen in the back will be very aggressive, and the one furthest back looks like a Soul Mage. He’ll be dangerous if you let him fight."
