Chapter 58: Imminent danger

Elliot and Jenna were slightly disturbed by the fact that this bastard repeatedly talked about playing something in such a frightening voice.

Wasn’t that common in horror stories? It happened frequently, for goodness’ sake!

That’s why they both swallowed hard and looked at each other when he stopped talking.

"...We shouldn’t go," Jenna said quickly.

Elliot knew. "I know. That would be a death sentence. We’re barely halfway through the Awakened Rank, we can’t go into ruins like these."

"Yeah. We’d better go back."

Elliot nodded in agreement. They would find another place to run to. The problem was that they also had to run from the griffin, which, luckily, hadn’t returned yet.

So they turned around to go back, but then they couldn’t move.

"No, no..."

"You can’t leave."

"You can’t leave..."

That annoying voice echoed in their ears again.

"You only have one choice..."

"Hehe, just one..."

"Play."

"Play. Come on."

Elliot gritted his teeth and looked at Jenna.

"It looks like we have no other choice." He smiled.

Then she took a deep breath, gripped the dark magic sword in her hand, and nodded. "Let’s go."

They both began to enter once more, but this time with an indescribable pressure on their shoulders. They had escaped one evil—the griffin—only to fall into another, this time unknown, inside a Ruin, which could mean it was much more dangerous.

The fact that their sense of smell was blocked here and that their sense of direction was so strange also revealed to them that this ruin was possibly several times more dangerous than the previous griffin, but then again, did they have any alternatives?

In the face of certain adversity, you can only remain passive and continue because there is nothing you can do.

They couldn’t survive against that griffin, no matter what they did.

This time, they survived thanks to fate’s collapse and their immense luck, but there was no difference between ruin and the griffin: they would die either way.

At least here they had a chance to survive... or to live a few more minutes.

Venturing in without a fixed destination led them to wander through extremely long but very well-made corridors.

In one of those corridors, they found rooms, halls, kitchens, bathrooms... All kinds of things, as if it were a house.

In another, they found training and entertainment rooms, but nothing was being used.

There was practically nothing inside except for what characterized it.

Several minutes passed until the voice sounded again above their heads, indicating that they were close.

They looked at each other, swallowed hard, and continued onward. One clenched his sword, and the other clenched his fists.

Then, after walking for another five minutes through curious, splendid, and strange corridors, they suddenly saw a door waiting for them at the end of it.

As they walked toward it, more and more doors appeared before them, one next to the other. Their hearts trembled when they realized that they were suddenly faced with more than 200 identical doors.

"What do we do?" Jenna whispered. Elliot didn’t know how to respond.

"Go through one of these doors, maybe?"

"Which one?"

"..."

Confused, they tried to enter the first one they saw, but then a small spark fell from the sky, causing them both to take a few steps back.

"Hey, hey..." A slightly tender smile from what appeared to be a child echoed in their ears, and then a strange child dressed in curious, ancient clothing appeared floating above them.

Both stood guard, not allowing themselves to be fooled by the appearance of such a small child. Even more so, the fact that he was flying and had no aura reflected unprecedented danger.

"Hehehe, no, no, no. You won’t fight me, don’t worry." Said the child, shaking his whole body to deny this fact. Unlike the previous one, both of them could hear his shrill voice.

But even though he looked like a baby, neither of them relaxed before him.

"...A voice like yours brought us here. What should we do?" Elliot asked.

"Yes, yes. My brother told me he was going to send me some fun people. Is that you?" He moved in excited circles and clapped at the end of his words. "Okay, then let’s play. Well, our game will be simple, but later you’ll have to play more."

Finally, the strange-looking little boy pointed to all the doors.

"You must choose one door and enter. Depending on your luck, you may choose an empty door, a door with great riches, a door with a test for one person, or for two, or 100... Hehe, no one knows. Only our King. But it’s fun to know what fate has in store for you, right? Hehehe, come on, choose one and enter at my beloved game."

"Choose a door?" Elliot and Jenna had a bad feeling about this, but instinctively looked at the doors, perhaps hoping to see something on one that would tell them there was no danger.

But there was nothing.

The only thing they could think of when they saw them was what the little boy had just said: There were free doors. Doors with great riches or doors with tests, various ones.

But there was no clue as to which was which.

Elliot looked back at the little boy flying above them. "What are these tests you speak of?" he asked.

The boy looked at him for a moment before answering tenderly. "They could be beasts, cliffs, or something dangerous, but exciting. The truth is that to pass the tests, you’ll have to experience thrilling moments and situations that get your adrenaline pumping. Don’t you think that’s exciting? It’s the best!" he exclaimed joyfully.

"Beasts..." Elliot frowned.

’We just got out of a beast, and now we have to try to pass the games of a Lunatic, with beasts.’ He clenched his fist and realized he had no weapon.

Without weapons, he would be doomed if he had to fight a powerful beast, so no matter what happened, he didn’t want to go in there.

Then he wanted to ask one more question, but the little boy raised his hand to stop him.

"No more questions. Choose quickly, because another guest is coming to choose their door too. And you can’t do the tests with three people, maximum two."

"Another guest?" Elliot’s eyes lit up.

’The griffin... Shit. It’s true, it’s still here.’ He looked at Jenna, both thinking the same thing.

They didn’t know how dangerous the tests in front of them were, but they were being chased by a Rank A Beast!

They couldn’t be more dangerous than that! Perhaps!

So, after receiving the ultimatum, they were both forced to choose a door. After thinking about it for a few minutes, they chose one and went in. Luckily for them, it was a door that could fit two people.
