Chapter 52: Mushroom Mountain
However, it was enough.
As they traveled, Elliot realized that his greatest weakness was that he didn’t know how to fight. He may have had strength, but he didn’t know how to utilize all of it.
But as the days of continuous fighting passed, he began to improve rapidly.
Additionally, it helped him greatly to know that there weren’t only Orcs here, so he could fight Werewolves and other types of beasts he encountered along the way, which helped him improve in different ways of fighting.
In this way, three days passed.
"We’ve been traveling almost all day for three days. How big is this place?" Jenna complained as she leaned against a tree to rest.
It was getting dark again, and the fog slowly began to settle over them. They had seen so many trees that she was starting to get a little stressed, thinking that they had entered Tall-Ur and were walking to their deaths.
Elliot was almost the same as her, but he didn’t reveal his feelings.
"I think I read once that crossing from Tall-Ar to the other side of Tall-Ur took more than a month of walking without rest."
"A month?!" Jenna exclaimed in surprise.
"Haha, maybe. But Tall-Ar is small; it would take us several hours to cross it, so we should say that Tall-Or and Tall-Ur are the real giants."
"Sigh..."
After they both caught their breath, they got up to continue on their way. They didn’t know where they were walking, but they occasionally made marks on the trees to avoid going around in circles, as the number of trees here was ridiculously large.
They both resumed their journey shortly after making some marks on the trees, but suddenly, Elliot stopped, looking up between the trees.
"What’s that?"
Jenna stopped too and glanced at him quickly, creating her sword. "What is it? Some kind of beast?"
Elliot tried to look more closely, staring at something rising above the trees like a colossus watching everything.
It wasn’t a living creature, and despite the mist that was slowly beginning to cover the surroundings, Elliot managed to glimpse it slightly between the branches.
"It’s the mountain!" he exclaimed, and joy rose in his heart.
Jenna looked at him, confused for a brief moment, until she realized.
"The mushroom-shaped mountain you told me about?" she asked quickly and tried to see, but she couldn’t.
Elliot nodded repeatedly. "Come on, let’s go, it’s right ahead!"
They both started running quickly, thinking they wanted to get there before midnight, but they soon realized their mistake.
It was almost midnight, and all they could see in front of them were trees and more trees. Fog had already covered much of the forest, forcing them to stop.
"We can’t go on like this. I didn’t think it would be this far."
"It’s okay, knowing we’re on the right track is enough. We should stop to eat and resume our journey at dawn. We can’t keep exhausting ourselves on such a long journey,"
"You’re right."
They both stopped and prepared food while talking about many things. Even though they were close to their destination, they didn’t rush to avoid falling into a trap.
Now that they had gone so far in, visibility at night was limited, so they couldn’t take any more risks.
Thus, a peaceful night passed.
It was the first night that no beasts attacked them. Usually, Orcs or Wolves would approach, making it difficult for both of them to rest. But this time, they were lucky.
At dawn, they resumed their journey.
Little by little, the mountain became more visible among the trees, occasionally obscured by large logs, but with a good sense of direction, they managed to get closer. However, it wasn’t until the fifth day that they finally reached the vicinity.
Upon arrival, they understood why they could see it from such a distance.
"God... It’s huge."
Even though they were still far away, this mountain was so large that it hid the other large mountains on the other side of the forest.
Just as they marveled at it, a loud sound snapped them out of their thoughts.
"KYAAAA!"
A strange chirping sound from a huge bird made them both quickly hide near a tree. Then, a huge shadow blocked the sun from them.
"That big?"
It was over 8 meters long, and its wings were gigantic; perhaps each wing measured about 2.5 meters, but it was difficult to calculate because it was so large.
"It was some kind of eagle, right?’ asked Elliot, who didn’t know much about birds.
Jenna nodded.
"...That’s dangerous," she whispered, her voice almost trembling.
"How dangerous?" he asked quickly.
Jenna couldn’t take her eyes off the enormous bird that seemed to be circling the mountain.
"It’s a Giant Steel-Legged Eagle. It’s a B-rank beast, at least."
Elliot’s eyes widened, and he also looked at the beast. Although he had never seen or heard of it before, it looked imposing. What’s more, its legs glistened in the sunlight, reflecting the pure steel in them.
It was a very special beast.
As they stood there, absorbed in fear, strange drops suddenly fell on their arms.
"Hm? Is it raining?" Elliot asked unconsciously, but he soon realized it was a stupid question. How could it be raining when the sun was shining so brightly?
He looked at his arm and felt stunned to see red liquid.
"Blood?" Jenna asked, and they both looked up in shock. Thinking they had fallen into a deadly trap, but what surprised them was that there was nothing there.
Some leaves on the trees were covered in blood, but there was no one nearby bleeding.
They both trembled as they realized something. The eagle’s screech echoed above them again, and shortly after, it flew by again. They both looked up to watch it and realized what was happening.
That Giant Steel-Legged Eagle... was seriously injured.
The deep wound on it frightened them more than if they had seen another one, because that meant that...
As if fate didn’t want to keep them waiting, with the pure desire to show them the terrifying moment they were experiencing, a huge body about 6 meters long rose above the mountain they wanted to reach. Its figure was very peculiar.
