Chapter 117: Vermillion Phylactery
Chapter 117: Vermillion Phylactery
Kaiju concentrated his shadow mana on his hands, enabling him to grab the phylactery. He patiently waited for the Gacha System to analyze the artifact and provide him information about it.
{Vermillion Phylactery (Epic)
Descriptions: One of the treasures necessary for Vladislaus’ ascension to become a Vampire King. A blood-red crystal phylactery, encased in a lattice of obsidian veins that pulse with an eerie glow. It is said to be the crystallized essence of a Viscount vampire, forged through the sacrifices of maidens of the other race–a thousand of them, in fact. The phylactery constantly seeps a slow trickle of blood, as though it is alive, and those who wield it feel a dark presence lingering within, whispering secrets of blood magic. It was feared that the artifact does not merely store power but hungers for it, growing stronger with each life it siphons.
Effects:
Crimson Rejuvenation: The phylactery absorbs the blood of slain enemies, converting it into life force for the wielder. Upon killing an opponent, a portion of health and stamina is instantly restored, and wounds rapidly heal.
Sanguine Dominion: Grants mastery over blood manipulation, allowing the user to solidify, corrode, or control the blood of others within a limited range. Can be used to restrain foes, enhance attacks, or even drain vitality directly.
Phantom Heart: If the wielder suffers a fatal blow, the phylactery shatters in their place, reviving them with a portion of their strength at the cost of permanently weakening the artifact. After three revivals, the phylactery crumbles into dust.
Covenant of the Forgotten: Allows the wielder to channel the knowledge and power of the phylactery’s previous owner, temporarily boosting their magic rank by one tier for a short duration. However, prolonged use risks losing control to the phylactery’s lingering will, causing the wielder to succumb to madness.}
Kaiju was a bit disappointed, but knowing he was not able to wear it made him more dismayed. It would benefit it more to the vampire race. If only one of the Crimson Knights wore it, the battle might last for a while.
This also confirms Kaiju’s speculation that even an Epic grade artifact does not always increase the attribute points–still dependent on the artifact, of course. It doesn’t mean that the artifact was not worthy of its rank. The very fact that it could produce an effect that has higher impact than Rare grade already conveyed it was worthy of its rank. In addition, wearing it has requirements, so obviously, one has to be worthy of wearing it.
It was like a man, who was expert at swinging a branch of a tree, was rewarded with a cold, sharp sword to his liking.
Just the first effects alone, Crimson Rejuvenation, could make anyone an unstoppable killing machine if they would have to face large quantities of weak enemies.
Kaiju stored it in his inventory. However, the Gacha System might have some disagreement with him.
{If you store it in your inventory, it might corrupt other artifacts. Unless, you want to waste some space for the artifact to be isolated from others.}
’Go ahead.’
{Then, I’m afraid your inventory is already full.}
Kaiju was stunned and smiled. ’That’s fine. I don’t have anything to store anyway. It’s not like I’m inside Herforao’s cave.’
{Fair enough.}
Kaiju soon visualized his current inventory, and the Gacha System presented it in his mind.
{Inventory: Flame Orb [3] (Common), Smoke Bomb [4] (Common), Scroll of Lesser Healing [4] (Rare), Scroll of Lesser Mana Recovery [3] (Rare), Arcane Spark Bomb [5] (Common), Throwing Dagger [15] (Common), Cooking Apparatus, Bloodthorn Dagger (Rare), Frostfang Dagger (Rare), Vermillion Phylactery (Epic).}
Kaiju missed a bit of how many artifacts were stored in his inventory. He was glad, however, he used it all, giving some to his friends–only his obligations.
Of course, he was glad that an Epic grade artifact had finally been stored on his inventory.
Come to think of it, I barely used the Flame Orb and the Smoke Bomb, even the Arcane Spark Bomb. I should have given them to Qwanisha. Kaiju felt his heart ache, just believing that Vermillion Phylactery might destroy them, similar to the Copper Ring of Endurance earlier.
He shook his head. I should find a time to use them earlier even if it is inconvenient. After all, I can’t just let it die without having a purpose in life. Kaiju chuckled on his train of thoughts.
He finally returned to reality. He perceived the presence of his pets on his shoulder and smiled.
He uttered under his breath. "Finally, we have come this far, Little Gorilla and Snow. After six months, away from each other for three months, we are about to finally challenge the Trial. Are you two excited?"
Little Gorilla and Snow nodded frantically.
"Master, can we think about the future?"
Kaiju nodded. "Of course. I think we better think about it now, so we will do our utmost to stay alive and complete the Trial."
"You’re right, Master! There’s nothing more I wish to be in your hometown."
Kaiju was taken aback. If it was before, he might have been affected and lowered his head. However, now, he calmly replied, "There’s nothing special really, Snow. But, if you’re referring to my world, not a specific place, of course, we will explore every nook and crook of it."
Snow’s eyes lit up.
"Then, I’m looking forward to that Master!" His voice was filled with enthusiasm.
Kaiju was delighted he managed to cheer up Snow. After all, the battle they were about to face was a bloody one. It was good that he managed to raise her spirit. As long as she won’t be exhausted by the time we fight Vladislaus and others.
He then noticed the silent Little Gorilla. The latter must have been pondering about the future, as well.
"What are you thinking, Little Gorilla?"
Little Gorilla replied, "Master, I’m thinking of visiting the church in your world, where Faith resided. I want to be baptized."
Kaiju was stunned and nodded with a bright smile. "Of course, we will go there. We will even ask the company of Faith."
"That’s good." The Little Gorilla now was a bit matured, and Kaiju noticed it.
Is he still Little Gorilla? He shook his head with a silly smile. He’s not little anymore.
"And Master..."
"What is it, Little Gorilla?"
"Will you accompany me?"
"Of course."
"To be baptized?! Really?" Little Gorilla lost his composure, as his golden eyes sparkled with excitement.
Kaiju was taken aback. He coughed awkwardly and responded, "Not that part, of course. I will just be your witness."
"Ohh..." Little Gorilla was disheartened.
Kaiju sighed helplessly. Why are they so desperate to baptize me? I can’t just believe in a God while doubting His existence, right?
He could only try to comfort Little Gorilla.
"I apologized, Little Gorilla. I’ll contemplate it more."
Little Gorilla shook his head. "You don’t have to force yourself because of me, Master."
Kaiju was stunned. My Little Gorilla has finally matured. An image of Faith appeared in his mind. She should, too.
Despite Faith being depressed when he last met her, the latter was still able to ask him if he could be converted.
He did not know whether to admire or be annoyed by Faith’s determination.
