Chapter 60: Operation Aunt Asena

After watching her uncle walk away, tall and composed in his usual stiff stride, Jacklin let out a long, deflated sigh. Her shoulders sagged as she leaned on the marble pillar, fingers flying over her phone. She barely noticed her surroundings, still fixated on the unexpected reaction or rather, lack of reaction from her famously composed uncle.

"Dean, he didn’t react as we expected... what should we do?" she texted her cousin, her fingers clenched around the phone.

Only a handful of people knew the full story behind the infamous rumours circling about their uncle, Clyde Du Pont. The powerful, cold-blooded patriarch of the Du Pont family. Jacklin and her cousin were among those rare few. And their uncle had gone easy on his father. Jacklin had to admit that if it had been her, she might have torn their wretched grandfather apart herself.

They had grown up under his watchful impassive eye. But over the years, they had become experts in reading the tiniest cracks in his polished demeanour.

Last year, when they had noticed a peculiar shift in their uncle’s behaviour during his visit to the cosplay event, they had been beside themselves with gleeful disbelief. Who would have thought their forever single, emotionally flat uncle was into this?!

And not just this, he had a rare, pure, utterly unexpected obsession. Her name was Asena.

Well, her character name was, anyway.

She had dug through every corner of the cosplay event, trying to track her down that day. But it was futile.

Unfortunately, Asena valued her privacy more than anything else. She was a ghost. No real name, no real photos. Just her cosplay traces that only made her more intriguing.

There wasn’t any clue about her identity. They had searched for her for around a year and had no results. She and Dean had even tried to pass off someone else as her by imitating her outfit. But Clyde hadn’t even blinked at them.

They realised their uncle’s interest wasn’t just about the setup but rather the person herself.

They were devastated that their search for her had come to a dead end.

Then came that night.

Jacklin had been casually scrolling through the WeChat fan requests when she saw the profile picture. It was unmistakable. The same necklace that Asena’s fan had given her was around her neck. It was like the universe was giving them a second chance. She had practically screamed.

She had jumped up so fast in excitement that she had spilled her boba milk tea all over herself.

She was tempted to ask about her name or anything to find her, but she held back in the past days, fearing she would scare her.

Now, after she met her in person, Asena, whoever she truly was, was more beautiful up close. Despite Jacklin’s earlier excitable outburst, she was gentle and well-mannered, elegant in the way only someone completely unaware of their own charm could be. Perfect. Absolutely perfect for being her little aunt!

But her uncle did not react the way she predicted.

"Nothing at all?" Dean messaged back.

"Well, he looked for more than thirty seconds and kind of grumbled about her being Leo’s fan...." she replied by text.

There was a pause before Dean’s next message popped up.

"Cheer up! This is a huge win! The Clyde I know doesn’t even notice people. He definitely is interested in her! Hold onto her like your life depends on it!"

Jacklin’s lips curled into a confidant smile as she straightened up. Dean was right. Yes, this was just the beginning.

She tucked her phone away and made her way back into the fan meeting room. The atmosphere had grown warmer and more lively. A spread of lunch had just been served, filling the room with a mouth-watering aroma of grilled meats, seafood, and fragrant rice.

Everyone was seated around a long table covered in pastel floral cloth. Paper name cards, fan-decorated Leo merch, and carefully folded napkins added a festive flair.

Plates were filled with roast chicken, steaks, shrimp, seasonal salad, potato mash, and rice, accompanied by excited chatter.

Drinks varied from grape juice to cola, wine, and sparkling water.

Micah, still disguised as the girl, sat quietly at the edge of the table, poking his chicken with a fork, listening.

"Big sister, the production team had planned just a dinner for our Leo. I checked it. Can you believe it? It was a mediocre restaurant!"

LeLe (or LeoLuvsMe) said with an offended pout.

"What? They think of our Leo as some newcomer?!" Sister Candra huffed, slamming her glass of bear down with enough force to rattle the table.

"Yeah! It’s all because of that damn Twilight entertainment!" said KingRuleOverMe, her glossy wavy hair bouncing as she tossed her head. Her dramatic eyeliner gave her an intimidating look. "They are obviously looking down on our Leo!"

"Why?" Micah asked, blinking innocently.

He knew Leo would leave this company and establish his own, but he hadn’t realised the mistreatment had started so early and had not been just the scandal that drove Leo away.

"Why? Because our Leo does not bend to abide by their unspoken rules! He doesn’t have a backup or patron, and he won’t go to those parties to charm those higher-ups! He’s pure! Clean! principled!" Sister Meg said.

Micah nearly choked upon hearing those words. What pure? What principled? That Leo was screwed in the head! He just liked to watch, not to touch!

He swallowed his food and said, "But he has brought tons of money and fame for them!"

"Exactly!" Sister Candra slammed her palm on the table.

"Calm down," Jacklin said while wiping her mouth with a napkin. "I already contacted his agent. We have moved the dinner to a decent hotel near their production site. It’s elegant, private and very Leo-like."

HisMajestyMuffin, the girl with bobbed hair, frowned thoughtfully. "But I think because we meddled, their attitude toward our Leo became worse. Twilight thinks if they cheap out, his fans like us will step in and pamper him."

"But what if we don’t, and Leo becomes a laughingstock?!" LeLe said, clearly distressed.

"Yeah. The problem is Twilight entertainment."

Leo’sThirdCocubine stabbed her steak with passion.

"Their attitude was not that bad before, was it?! Did something new happen?!" asked TheKing’marshmallow between sips of soda.

Jacklin leaned in, lowering her voice like she was revealing state secrets.

"Yeah, their vice president had her eyes on Leo. She was pissed he rejected her. So she is trying to freeze him out."

"Shit! Those bastards!" Micah burst out, his voice fluctuating slightly.

Then Micah blinked in horror, face flushing red. He hadn’t meant to say that aloud. He wasn’t trying to defend Leo. He just hated it when someone used her power to force a person. More despicable if it was related to sex.

There was a pause at the table before sister Candra laughed aloud. "Yeah! That’s the spirit! Let it out!"

With that, the rest followed, giggling and raising their glasses.

"To our Leo!" sister Candra shouted.

"To our Leo!" everyone echoed, their glasses clinking with enthusiasm.

Micah wiped the nonexistent sweat from his forehead. He had dodged this time.

They resumed their eating while chatting about recent gossip.

Micah listened to their conversation, his mind on tonight’s events. It appeared the flaw in the actress’s plan was the fan’s meddling. If it had not been in a new environment, that actress would have succeeded in her scheme.

Well, the good thing was he was on her side. Micah took a sip of his juice, smirking.
