Chapter 40: Darcy’s Accidental Daycare

Darcy, seated in the shotgun seat, glanced around and said.

"Where are we going?"

Micah adjusted his black-rimmed glasses, a smirk on his face.

"A new entertainment park opened recently on the west side. I thought Nora might enjoy some rides. Maybe a water slide or two in this kind of heat. If not, we can catch a movie, hit the arcade, or find something else to do."

At the mention of the park, Nora’s eyes lit up like sparklers.

"Cool! I haven’t been to an amusement park in ages! When I saw your car, I thought you’d take us to a fancy tea place or something boring like that."

Micah laughed, flicking on the indicator as he turned into the highway exit. "Do I look like I drink tea with my pinky up?"

"Yep, but before you open your mouth..."

Darcy murmured under his breath, covering it with his hand.

Micah glanced over, frowning.

"What did you say? I didn’t catch it."

"Nothing. Focus on the road." Darcy said quickly. He turned his gaze to the window, hiding a small smirk. He was still thinking about last night, and how Micah had been so chatty in the match, cursing and mocking others. Looking at the boy now, with all his sharp features, expensive clothes, and fashionable style, it was hard to believe he was the same person.

The rest of the ride was filled with playful banter and light conversation. By the time they arrived at the amusement park, Nora’s stomach growled loudly.

Before Micah could even react, Darcy laughed out, getting himself a smack on the back from Nora.

Micah headed straight toward snack stalls and returned with trays full of nachos, crispy chips, and chicken wings.

The trio found a shaded spot near the fountains and sat down. Nora had just stuffed a cheesy nacho into her mouth when her phone buzzed on the table. She glanced and frowned.

"It’s Mum," she mumbled around the bite and stood up to answer.

Micah leaned back in his chair, stretching his legs out with a sigh. Darcy eyed Nora’s expression curiously. There was a tension in her shoulders, and then she relaxed visibly.

After a few minutes of short replies, Nora ended the call and sat down again beside them.

"What was it about?"

Darcy asked, confused as to why their mother called Nora.

"Nothing, Mum just wanted to know if we come back for dinner or not,"

Nora replied, picking a sticky wing.

They resumed their eating when Darcy’s phone buzzed with an incoming text message.

He pulled out his phone.

Mum: The boy’s parents were here. But they did not want me to tell Nora.

Darcy’s fingers moved fast.

Darcy: for what? Did they give you a hard time?

Mum: not at all. They brought gifts. They wanted to know the whole story about that night and said their son did not tell them.

Darcy: oh... strange. Have they left?

Mum: yeah, don’t worry. I just want to let you know, considering you are all with him. Have fun.

Darcy didn’t tell Micah that his parents were in his home. He locked the screen and slid the phone back into his pocket.

Micah, who had grown unusually quiet after the phone call, sat with his legs crossed and gaze lowered. The word ’Mum’ hung in the air like a ghost he couldn’t look in the eye. That woman was his mother too. Every reminder still came with a twisting feeling in his gut.

"Well," Micah said suddenly, standing up and brushing off his hands.

"Let’s go try that one."

He pointed at a towering, double-shot ride that launched people straight into the sky and dropped them back down in thrilling free fall.

Micah needed a distraction. What was more fitting than a surge of adrenaline?!

Nora’s face lit up with childlike glee. "Yes, that one!"

She abandoned the half-empty trays and ran ahead like a wind, nearly dragging Micah with her. Darcy sighed, staying behind to tidy up the mess. He tossed the containers into the bin and followed after them.

What followed was nothing short of chaos.

Nora and Micah were like two hyper kids arriving in a candy land, shouting at each new ride, bouncing from one attraction to the next. They challenged each other to see who screamed louder on the roller coaster and soaked themselves silly on the water rides. They dragged Darcy from one side to the other, exclaiming in excitement.

Darcy, soaked and slightly exasperated, felt like a tired dad watching over the two naughty children.

Spending time with Micah, he couldn’t help to notice something.

He had made a lot of assumptions about Micah at first and thought he was just another rich kid. But after seeing the car he drove and the way he spent money without blinking, Darcy realised Micah was on a whole other level.

He wasn’t just well off. This was heir to a chaebol kind of wealth.

Still, Micah had never put on airs in front of them. He even used his body as a shield in front of those hooligans to protect a stranger. Darcy’s view of him changed more and more.

His prejudice against the upper class had formed after years of working and studying. He remembered all the kids he had tutored, the arrogant teammates in Math tournaments, or his snob customers in part-time jobs. They saw his second-hand clothes and part-time jobs as something beneath them.

But Micah was different. From the first encounter, those beautiful hazel eyes were clear like a mirror. No pity, no superiority. Just sincerity.

The reserved boy from the alley had transferred into a loud, overdramatic ball of energy.

And when he looked at Nora, it wasn’t the eyes of a teenager with hidden intentions but rather the protectiveness of an older brother.

Darcy smiled faintly, watching Micah and Nora argue over who had screamed more on the ride.

After a few hours, they found a quiet spot and ordered a warm meal.

They sat on a wooden bench, the scent of grilled food filling the air.

Just as their order arrived, Micah’s phone buzzed.

He fished it out with one hand and looked at the caller ID.

AAA.

WeChat ID... Micah thought for a second and remembered he was the one with the deformed car roof. He had completely forgotten about him.

A smug smile spread across his face.

Obviously, the guy hadn’t managed to find him after all. Instead, he had resorted to calling.

With a flick of his thumb, Micah declined the call without hesitation.

"Didn’t you need to answer that?"

Darcy looked up from his fries.

"Nah... it’s not important."

Micah said casually, already taking a bite from his sandwich.

******

Meanwhile, in a sleek office miles away, Aidan Willson’s expression twisted with fury.

The call had been cut.

He slammed a file off his desk, sending it flying toward his assistant.

"Bunch of useless idiots..."

He snapped. "You couldn’t even find a brat for me?!"

Shirley scrambled to pick up the scattered papers.

"I apologise, sir... there was no waiter registered with that appearance. And we couldn’t track his IP address either."

Aidan ran a hand through his messy brown hair and yelled.

"Get out."

Shirley didn’t wait for a second dismissal. The door clicked shut behind her.

Aidan slumped on his leather chair with a harsh exhale.

What should have been a simple matter had now bruised his ego. The boy, whoever he was, not only damaged his car but now had the nerve to mock him from the shadows.

Declining the call was a clear message. The boy was silently laughing at Aidan’s bold claim that he would track him down in two days. What a joke.

Aidan crumbled the paper listing the waiter’s name in his fist, his knuckles whitening with rage.

He would find the boy, one way or another. If it took flattery or even seduction to lower his guard, so be it. And once his identity was revealed, he would make sure the boy learned exactly what it meant to mock Aidan Wilson.
