Chapter 185: A Flick on the Forehead

Micah logged off the game and pushed his chair back. He let out a breath as he stood up. He stretched both arms over his head, arching his back until a few joints popped. He reached for his water bottle when a knock came at the door.

Micah walked over and opened the dorm door. There, standing just outside, was Darcy. His chest was heaving, eyes wide, and his face slightly flushed. His hair was a mess, and it clung to his forehead like he had just sprinted downstairs. Micah blinked in surprise.

Darcy looked up, breathing through his nose. His eyes searched Micah’s face like he was trying to read something important. "Hey," he finally said, his voice coming out a bit stiff.

"What’s the matter?" Micah asked, puzzled.

Darcy took a deep breath. "Nothing... it’s just..."

Micah tilted his head, his confusion deepening. The hallway was too crowded, and he couldn’t hear what Darcy was saying. He opened the door wider. "Come in. Let’s talk inside. I’m alone."

Darcy stepped into the room, his hands twitching at his side. After he came in, he reached back and quietly shut the door. His eyes didn’t meet Micah’s for a moment. Then he turned around slowly. "I’m sorry," he said, voice low. "You suddenly logged off... I thought you were mad at me..."

Micah leaned a shoulder against the wall, staring at Darcy. Was he really that important to Darcy? Important enough that Darcy dashed down one floor just to apologise? Why? Why did he look so nervous?

Micah’s eyes flicked down to Darcy’s hands. They were fumbling with the hem of his shirt. His shoulders were stiff too. That uneasy expression... It didn’t suit him.

At first, he had been genuinely mad at Darcy. He was the one who brought up that dumb bet with Archie and let the other two players overhear their absurd back and forth. It was embarrassing.

But by the time the match ended, Micah’s anger towards Darcy had fizzled out. What was he even mad about, really? Darcy’s competitor streak? That wasn’t a bad thing. If anything, it was proof he wasn’t like the Darcy in the novel. Soft spoken, overly trusting, a pushover, or a merry-go-round naive boy swaying with every wind every time one of those messed-up male leads gave him attention.

No, this Darcy had a spine. He pushed back. He stood up against Archie, the supposed second male lead, without flinching. That mattered.

And if Micah had to take a little hit to his pride along the way? Fine. He had lived for years enjoying the privileges that were supposed to belong to Darcy. A bit of public shame was a small price to pay.

The room was quiet except for the faint hum of the fan. Outside, footsteps echoed distantly through the hall.

Darcy glanced at Micah again. The silence stretched, and it started to feel heavier by the second. Why wasn’t he saying anything? Did that mean he really was mad?

Darcy swallowed hard. "I think I let my ego get to me." His voice was softer now, more uncertain. He took a step forward, then another, like he wasn’t sure he had the right to close the distance. "And I was afraid you wouldn’t want to team up with me anymore..."

Micah blinked, then tilted his head. Slowly, he reached out a hand and flicked Darcy on the forehead. Not too hard, but enough to make him flinch.

"Idiot. Do you really think I could stand that annoying bear of a guy?!"

Darcy blinked in surprise, rubbing his forehead, a little stunned. He stared at Micah like he was trying to figure out whether he was serious or not. "But you agreed to play with him."

"So?" Micah shot back, folding his arms. "I had my reasons. It wasn’t because I enjoyed it."

Then a small smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth. "Actually, I’m glad I didn’t tell you that he was that top laner you had a face-off with last time. Or you would have killed him mid-match. And that would have become the talk of LOJ for a decade."

Micah laughed at that, shaking his head.

Darcy was taken aback. "Huh? What top laner?"

"DiabolicDestroyer, remember?" Micah said.

Darcy stared at Micah in silence. "You mean he was Archie? But...Didn’t you say that account belonged to the vice captain?"

Micah shrugged. "Maybe they switch in the middle. Anyway, Archie found out about my account. That’s why I ended up playing with him."

Micah pursed his lips and watched Darcy’s reaction. He didn’t want to explain all this, especially not now, but seeing how anxious Darcy had been changed his mind. If it had been anyone else making Darcy this upset, Micah would have snapped at them. And if that ’anyone else’ happened to be himself? Then he needed to fix it.

The last outburst after his hiding from Leo made Micah realise something. Darcy was more sensitive than he looked. Pretending things were fine or hiding the truth wasn’t going to work with him.

Micah figured from now on, he would try to be honest, about whatever he could be, anyway. Of course, not about the novel. Darcy wouldn’t believe him. No one would. Micah hadn’t believed it either, not until he had seen the DNA test results with his own eyes. And Micah couldn’t reveal that to anyone. Not yet.

"So, he basically blackmailed you?" Darcy said, his fists clenching at his sides.

Micah laughed, shaking his head. "What blackmailing? I kind of wanted to get rid of that nonsense from the forum post so I agreed to join. But now I think I was just being stupid." Micah scratched his cheek. "My reputation is already at rock bottom. So what if people label me as Campus Flower? Who cares if people find out about my real identity in-game? What more damage could it do?"

"No. You cared about me." Darcy mumbled, looking down. So that was it. He had been wondering why all of a sudden Micah got close to Archie. And now, it made sense to him.

That guy had pressured Micah into it. But Archie probably didn’t know Micah had done that to protect his gaming account. DarkVyne.

Darcy’s eyes filled with hatred for a second before returning to normal.
